The IJAV includes refereed articles, technical notes, letters-to-the-editor, book reviews, author biographies, and announcements of general interest to readers. It is our pleasure to inform you that the International Journal of Acoustics and Vibration (IJAV) has been selected to be indexed in the Science Citation Index Expanded (SCIE). The SCIE is part of the web of science, engineering and computing produced by Thomson Reuters. The IJAV is also indexed in the Ebsco and Elsevier databases. Authors choosing to submit their manuscripts for publication consideration in the IJAV agree to follow these formatting and style guidelines in preparing their manuscript for review. If they do not, the editorial staff reserves the right to delay processing a manuscript until authors comply. Manuscripts Authors whose manuscripts are accepted for publication must transfer copyright to the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV). This transfer involves publication only and does not in any way alter the author's traditional rights regarding his/her manuscript. Articles may be theoretical or experimental in nature but articles that apply both theoretical and experimental approaches to solve acoustics and vibration problems are particularly welcome. Technical notes (or brief contributions), letters-to-the-editor, and announcements may also be submitted. The IJAV does not accept any manuscripts that have been previously published or are pending submissions in other engineering or scientific journals.
The submission of manuscripts in the following (or related) areas is encouraged: Active noise control Active vibration control Aeroacoustics Architectural acoustics Boundary element and finite element methods Condition monitoring and diagnostics Damping - passive and active Environmental/community noise Human response to sound and vibration Inverse methods Low frequency noise and vibration Machinery noise and vibration control Materials for noise and vibration control Measurement techniques Mechanisms of human hearing Modal analysis Musical acoustics Noise control elements Non-destructive testing Non-linear acoustics and vibration Numerical methods Occupational noise exposure and control Outdoor sound propagation Scattering of sound Signal processing Sound intensity Sound sources Sound transmission Statistical energy analysis Structural acoustics and vibration Structural intensity Transportation vibration and noise Underwater acoustics Vibration and shock Vibration sources Wavelet analysis You may also view our journal s subject classification upon creating a log-in ID and accessing the Author menu on our website. Manuscript Preparation All manuscripts are refereed by at least two referees and are reviewed by the Editor-in-Chief or an assigned Associate Editor before acceptance. Manuscripts of articles and technical notes should be submitted for review to the Editor-in-Chief via the online submission system at Prepare manuscripts on a PC-compatible computer and use any version of TeX, LaTeX, or Microsoft Word, if possible. Ensure that all equations and symbols are presented correctly in the submitted manuscript. Please note that it is the authors' responsibility to ensure complete compatibility of all submitted materials. The IJAV maintains a high standard in the reviewing process and only accepts papers of sufficient quality similar to manuscripts accepted by other SCIE-recognized refereed journals. Still, the interests of IJAV readers are broad, so write manuscripts so that readers in different fields of acoustics and vibration can easily understand them. On acceptance, revised articles, brief biographies and photographs of all authors will be submitted to the Managing Editor via the online submission system. (See On Acceptance.) Manuscripts should not normally exceed twenty double-spaced pages using a single column of text, one-inch margins, and Times New Roman, twelve-point font. (Review papers invited by the Editor-in-Chief may be longer.) Include no more than fifteen figures and illustrations. For review purposes, place figures, illustrations, and tables in the text of the article. On acceptance, the figures and their captions should be submitted separately from the article text. 2
Format manuscripts as follows: Page setup: 8.5 x11 or A4 paper Subdivide by main headings o Numbered (1, 2, 3, etc.) o Uppercase o Flush-left o Bold o Number and title separated by a period o One space above and below Example: 3. ZERO ORDER ALGORITHMS Subheadings within section o Numbered (1.1, 2.3, etc.) o Upper and lowercase o Flush-left o Bold o Number and title separated by a period o One space above and below Example: 2.3. Equations of Motion Sub-sub headings: italicize Define all Abbreviations and special terms used in a section entitled Nomenclature located in the body text before the introduction. On the first page, please include on separate lines and in upper and lowercase: Title of the manuscript o Bold o Align left Full name(s) of the authors(s) o Bold o Align left Affiliation(s) o Italic Postal address(es) of author(s) o Italic address(es) of author(s) o Italic Example: Sample Title of Paper John Q. Sample University of Sample, Alabama, USA @address.com Do not include the title, position or degree(s) for any of the manuscript s authors. Be sure that the postal address is current and that it includes the zip or other postal code and the name of the country. Notify the editorial staff if you do not want your address published in the journal. However, please include this information for contact purposes. Include, with each manuscript, an abstract of no more than 200 words. 3
Equations, Figures, and Tables Equations: Mathematical expressions must be typewritten as completely as possible. Distinguish between capital and lowercase letters that could, otherwise, cause confusion. In parentheses at the right margin, number equations consecutively in the order that they appear in the manuscript. Punctuate equations that appear within sentences in accordance with the punctuation guidelines in the Chicago Manual of Style (section 12.18). Separate equations in a list with a semicolon and end with a period. For example: a 2 + b 2 = c 2 ; (1) c 2 - b 2 = a 2 ; c 2 + a 2 = b 2. (1a) (1b) Use letters and numbers for any equations from an appendix i.e., Appendix A: (A1), (A2), (A3), etc. The proper abbreviations for equations referred to in the body text are Eq. and Eqs. i.e., Eq. (1), Eq. (1a), Eqs. (1) and (1a), etc. Only use metric units; the preferred metric system of the IJAV is the System International (SI). Never begin a sentence with an equation abbreviation. Instead, spell equation in full i.e., Equation (1). Figures: The proper abbreviations for figures referred to in the body text are Fig. and Figs. i.e., Fig. (1), Figs. (1) and (2), etc. Never begin a sentence with a figure abbreviation. Instead, spell figure in full i.e., Figure (1). Tables: Never abbreviate the word table when referring to a table in the body text i.e., Table 1, Table 2, etc. (Note that table numbers are not enclosed in parentheses.) Graphs, Diagrams, and Photographs Images to be included with manuscripts must be of the author s own creation. Images created by someone else must be accompanied with the appropriate image use permission and attribution in the image caption. Each picture or photograph in the submitted manuscript should be no wider than 87 mm (the width of the columns in printed issues). Images wider than 87 mm must be resized, and font sizes and image quality suffers. During the review process of the original manuscript, the figures should be included in the body of the paper, together with their captions, for clarity for reviewers. On acceptance, each of the figures should also be submitted in a separate file with the resolution no less than 300 dpi or figure-width no less than 800 px. The format for figures should be png, jpeg or pdf. The legend and any text on the figure, including axis titles and numbers, should use sans-serif font. The font size should be such that if the figure is formatted to be no wider than 87 mm, it looks the same as the font size of the text in the article. Please note that manuscripts published in the IJAV will be printed in black, white, and gray. Therefore, color graphs and diagrams may be difficult to comprehend. To avoid confusion, design graphs and diagrams so that they are legible in black, white, and gray. For example, Fig. (1) is easy to read because it is in full color, whereas, Fig. (2) is in black, white, and gray and, though it resembles Fig. (1), it is difficult to read. However, Fig. (3) shows that Var1 ends around y = 5 and 4
Var3 ends around y = 45 which is the opposite of what these variables do in Fig. (1). The data in Fig. (3) is identical to the data in Fig. (2), the only differences are the point-markers and the broken lines for Var1 and Var Var1 Var2 Var Var1 Var2 Var3 Figure 1. Format captions as shown. Figure 2. Format captions as shown Var1 Var2 Var3 Figure 3. Format captions as shown. Graphs: Original graphs and diagrams should be created electronically. Set lettering as large as possible so that they may be easily read when the figures are reduced to single column width. Include complete and specific axis identifiers. Captions: A caption must accompany each illustration. With the original manuscript being reviewed, place captions and figures within the text of the article where they fit best. On acceptance, captions should be double-spaced and included on a separate page at the end of the manuscript accompanying their figures. To increase legibility, please try to reduce the amount of lettering on the figures and include more detailed descriptions in the figure captions. Photographs: Photographs should be high contrast black, white, and gray. Photographs with a superimposed or unclean content will not be accepted. References Order: The order and style of reference information differs slightly between periodical and book references and, also, between published and unpublished references, depending on the available publication entries. Very often, the reference information submitted is too incomplete to be helpful. Authors must provide full details of their references. If in doubt, complete any unabbreviated information. 5
Order periodicals as follows: 1. name(s) of author(s); 2. title of article; 3. periodical name, italic; 4. volume number, bold; 5. issue number in parentheses; 6. beginning and final page numbers; and 7. year of publication; in parentheses. Examples: Pride, S. R. and Haartsen, M. W. Electroseismic wave properties, J. Acoust. Soc. Am., 100 (3), , (1996). Kim, S.-H. and Lee, I. Aeroelastic analysis of a flexible airfoil with free play non-linearity, J. Sound Vib., 193 (4), , (1996). Order books as follows: 1. name(s) of author(s); 2. title of chapter is permitted if book is an edited collection by many authors; 3. title of book, italic; 4. editor(s), if any, with "Ed(s)." following the name(s); 5. publisher; 6. location of publisher; 7. year of publication; 8. edition; 9. volume number, preceded by "Vol."; 10. chapter number; 11. page(s) cited; and 12. equation, figure or table number cited. Examples: Dowell, E. H. Aeroelasticity of plates and shells, Nordhoff, Leyden, (1975). Skudzryk, E. S. Simple and complex vibratory systems, the Pennsylvania State University Press, London, (1968). Other examples: Technical Report: Yang, J. N., Akbarpour, A., and Ghaemmaghami, P. Technical Report NCEER , Instantaneous Optimal Control Law for Tall Buildings Under Seismic Excitations, (1987). Conference Papers: Levy, E. K., Herrera, C. A., and Masaki, T. Bubbling fluidization of fine powders in a high-intensity acoustic field, Proc. International Fluidization Conference, Durango, Colorado, (1998). 6
Internet References: International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration, A brief history of the International Institute of Acoustics and Vibration (IIAV), Retrieved from (Accessed February 13, 2012). Numbering: Reference numbers should appear in the body text as a superscript at the end of the sentence that contains the reference unless such placement of the superscript causes ambiguity. The superscript reference number should be placed after the sentence-ending punctuation. Group references on a separate page (double-spaced) at the end of the manuscript. Footnotes are discouraged. Announcements and Reviews Contributed announcements as well as brief reports on meetings or discussions of interest to readers may be submitted for publication. Books may be submitted for review, and advertisements may be submitted, as well. For such submissions, please follow the same guidelines as authors would to write and submit articles. Submissions Submit all publication materials as PDF files to the IJAV Editor-in-Chief via the online submission system only. For the item to be published in a given issue of the IJAV, the manuscript must reach the Editor-in-Chief at least twelve weeks before the publication date. During the submission process on the IJAV website, choose two subjects from the Subject Classification options to describe your submission. Then, propose at least three potential reviewer names for your submission. These reviewer suggestions should be people who are experts in your field who you do not know personally. In your to the Editor-in-Chief, note the operating system and the word-processing software used to produce the manuscript as well as the names of all submitted files. Also note the authors' names and addresses as well as an estimate of the contribution of each author. This estimate will not to be printed with an accepted paper Ensure that all equations and symbols are presented correctly in the submitted draft of the manuscript. The IJAV manuscript preparation guidelines, as stated above, must be followed for a manuscript to be considered for publication. Even though submissions are processed in PDF form, prepare the manuscript for submission on a PC-compatible computer using any version of TeX, LaTeX, or Microsoft Word, if possible. On acceptance, a source file in this format is required. It is the authors' responsibility to ensure complete compatibility of submitted materials The author is informed via of every change of the status of the paper. He or she can also log in to the IJAV website and check on the paper s status. We ask that authors refrain from ing the Editor-in-Chief or Managing Editor with queries about their submissions for three months after submitting the manuscript. After this time has passed, authors may the editorial assistant at [email protected] about their paper s status. 7
Please know that the reviewers for the IJAV work on a voluntary basis. They may often take more time to complete the reviews because of additional commitments or professional obligations. We do our best to remind the reviewers to return their feedback in a timely manner; however, this does not happen in every case, and authors must wait for a publication decision for their submission. On Acceptance On acceptance, the revised manuscript along with brief biographies and photographs of all authors must be submitted to the IJAV Managing Editor via the website submission system. This source file should be in Latex or Microsoft Word form, with figures and captions uploaded as separate files from the manuscript text. Brief biographies ( words) and bust (head and shoulders) photographs of all authors are published in the IJAV along with the manuscripts. Biographies should include the author s education, present affiliation (company, institution, or university), location (city and country) as well as research and employment activities. Submit each photograph (image resolution of 300 dpi or higher) along with the corresponding biography in separate files. Finally, download, complete, scan, and upload the copyright transfer agreement provided on the website. 8
