M-Series A new frontier in network performance
2. M-Series: A new frontier in network performance A new frontier in network performance There are a number of reasons why organizations look to change their optical fiber networks. Some struggle with overloaded systems with new services, applications and security requirements that strain existing infrastructure. Others want to move from operator leasing or managed services for their dark fiber. Seeking to escape from costly contracts that don t allow for readily addressing changing system needs. Some want to update their networks, getting the most out of their dark fiber. Moving away from needlessly complex and expensive to maintain legacy approaches. Smartoptics M-Series marks a revolution in fiber optic networking solutions. The M-Series is a unique 1U multiplexer platform. It combines the simplicity of the embedded WDM approach with the features of a traditional transponder-based DWDM platform. A multiplexer with integrated management, amplification and signal conditioning. M-Series easily handles all of today s data protocols up to 100Gbps in a simple plug and forget approach. Corporate data centers, enterprises, and campus networks can now synchronously connect all of their storage and data traffic together at distances of up to 500 kilometers apart with minimal signal latency. Easier. Longer distance. Lower cost. M-Series intelligent embedded DWDM system, where the DWDM transceiver connects straight in to the host equipment, provides a cost effective plug and play solution ideal for all types of corporate data center connectivity solutions. Traditional telecom-based transponders used to be the go-to solution because they offer system management and amplification for longer distances. Something a purely passive embedded system can t offer. With M-Series, these hurdles are removed. So is the need for complicated systems to design, install and maintain. When it comes to price, M-Series is considerably lower in cost than telecom-based systems and has minimal ongoing operational costs.
3.
4. M-Series in short The world s first intelligent distance extending multiplexer Compact building practice 1U x 19 ETSI form factor. Integrated signal conditioning Integrated amplification, dispersion control and system management. Protocol transparency Support for any combination of SAN and WAN traffic - 100Mbps to 100Gbps. Robust Redundant hot pluggable power supply units (PSUs). Field serviceable network management board (NMB) without traffic interruption. Channel Density Available in 4 and 16 channel versions easily upgraded up to 32 channels. SmartOS Fully featured optical signal monitoring and system management.
5. M-Series: The best of both worlds Traditional transponder based DWDM connectivity Connecting multiple SAN and IP signals between sites was achieved through transponder based DWDM systems. These systems are suited to more complex telecom networks and are expensive and complicated to design, install and maintain. Transponder DWDM Mux EDFA Booster EDFA Preamp Dispersion comp OSC Acd/Drop Complicated & expensive OSA NMB Embedded XWDM connectivity XWDM transceiver connects direct in to SAN / IP switch and a patch cable connects it to a passive multiplexer. The XWDM functionality is embedded in to the SAN or IP switch. A simple and convenient method of connecting multiple sites through a fiber network. But without management and distances being limited to about 70 kilometers. Simple & easy Intelligent DWDM connectivity M-Series, the world s first intelligent distance extending multiplexer combines the simplicity and cost effectiveness of an embedded XWDM system with the features of a traditional telecom-based system. The best of both worlds. Simple & easy +
6. A side-by-side comparison of traditional DWDM and Smartoptics M-Series Traditional DWDM platforms Typically designed for the telecom market and overkill for corporate data center and campus networks FC switch has to be set in a mode that allows use of third party DWDM systems and loses some proprietary functions Unwanted signal latency is introduced Forward Error Correction in the FC switch needs to be disabled to accommodate third party DWDM system Two configurations required switch and DWDM system Expensive and inflexible networking M-Series ELWL approach with DWDM transceiver and intelligent multiplexer Layer 1 interoperability tested by Brocade for direct connect in to the FC Switch No special configuration required in the switch Overcomes any distance or monitoring requirements Easily upgradeable - just add new transceivers for extra channels Total control of network and bid process Low total cost of ownership fast return on investment Smartoptics adds the missing link in our portfolio. Klaus Jensen, Arrow, Denmark

8.
9. The Power of M-Series User friendly Reduced cost Longer distances Reduced footprint Green data center Same plug and play experience as a passive multiplexer. M-Series requires few components and little prerequisite optical networking skills. No complicated installation or configurations required. M-Series removes the need for OEO transponders and needs fewer optical transceivers, no mechanical chassis or separate management system. Amplification and dispersion control similar to an active DWDM system offers long distance support of up to 500 kilometers. Small 1U footprint. Important in locations where space is at a premium and extra rack space may not be available. M-Series low power consumption coupled with its small footprint results in the ultimate green data solution.
