2 Dear Friends, In November, the School of Medicine underwent an accreditation site visit by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME). We had an outstanding outcome, receiving full accreditation for the maximum term of eight years. Our next review will be in It took over two years and considerable effort to prepare for this site visit. More than 250 people participated, including full time faculty, medical students, residents, alumni, administrative staff, and representatives from our clinical partners. We submitted more than 2,500 pages of documents to demonstrate our compliance with the LCME accreditation standards. These standards address curriculum, student services, faculty, governance and leadership, teaching facilities, clinical facilities, and finances. Of the ninety-three accreditation criteria, the LCME determined that our compliance was satisfactory in ninety areas and was in need of improvement in only three. We have already taken steps to correct these three minor deficiencies. LCME accreditation is a rigorous process. Over the last two years, nearly 40% of the medical schools that underwent review did not achieve full accreditation for eight years. The LCME gave many schools a warning, and placed several on probation. Our success is a testament to the strength and dedication of the entire medical school community. The LCME commended the dean s leadership, the collegial atmosphere between students, faculty and administration, the strong commitment of our clinical partners, and our excellent educational facilities. They were again impressed with the Student Learning Center and the Center for Advanced Practice; and they were newly impressed with the Medical Education and Innovation Center in Baton Rouge. The Alumni Association has been critical to the school s success. Your support of scholarships, student activities, and strategic initiatives has enriched the experience of students and faculty, and contributed to our successful reaccreditation. 25 John Heaton ( 65) appointed Chief Medical Officer for LCMC HEALTH John Heaton ( 65) has been named Chief Medical Officer for LCMC Health. Dr. Heaton currently serves as Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer for Children s Hospital. In this newly created role, Dr. Heaton will be responsible for driving, supporting, and modeling a healthcare delivery system focused on quality, safety, service excellence, and the consistent delivery of an exceptional patient experience at the system s member hospitals, Children s Hospital, Touro, University Medical Center, West Jefferson Medical Center and New Orleans East Hospital. Dr. Heaton has proven his diplomacy, intelligence, and speed-to-action in System-level initiatives, and his commitment to LCMC Health and the success of our Academic Partners is second to none, said Greg Feirn, CEO, LCMC Health, in making the announcement. I am confident that our system will be extremely well-served by Dr. Heaton in his new role. Dr. Heaton An alumnus of the LSU School of Medicine, Dr. Heaton is a diplomate of the American Board of Anesthesiology and holds a Master of Medical Management degree from Carnegie Mellon University. There s so much conflicting information out there. How do you know what to believe? Who should you listen to? Students with mentors have an invaluable advantage. Students benefit greatly when they have access to the experience and perspective of a knowledgeable physician. Though almost all students agree that having a mentor is extremely valuable, only around a third of students actually Protégés Alumni Mentoring Program have one. Some have blamed themselves for not being assertive enough to find a mentor. Others think that the problem lies with the system, saying the short duration of courses and clerkships impedes their ability to form relationships with faculty and physicians. Finding a potential mentor and developing an effective relationship can be very difficult. That s what inspired Protégés to start an alumni mentor program. We know there are many alumni who find mentoring and advising students enjoyable and rewarding. It s our goal to unite these physicians and students. Mentors can help students with career decisions, evaluate potential residency programs, review resumes and personal statements, write letters of recommendation, and conduct mock interviews. 26 First Annual Marcia and Billy Beer Endowed Scholarship to be awarded Plans for the Marcia and Billy Beer Scholarship have been in place for many years and now have come to fruition as a result of a generous contribution by Marcia Beer. The ultimate plan, once the funds are endowed, is to establish as many full four-year scholarships as the annual earnings on the endowment allow. The Scholarships will be awarded to students based on financial need and will challenge recipients to repay the gift by offering one free day of medical care per month for patients unable to pay for professional services. This in kind repayment would begin once the student has completed formal training and established a medical practice. Billy Beer was treated at age 25 in the Charity Hospital Polio Unit in the acute stage of polio and required an iron lung to survive. He remained in the unit for 13 months and remained active and a vibrant lover of life until his death in His wife of 45 years, Marcia, now resides in Texas. The celebration continues... We had two children while I was in medical school and a third child at the end of my internship. While in practice of Ophthalmology in Natchitoches, LA, with my husband, I had the fourth child. Reunion weekend will be held on June 8 th and 9 th, 2018, at the Hilton Riverside in New Orleans. The Committee of 100 Champions of Excellence annual banquet will jump-start the festivities on Thursday, June 7 th. The annual Purple & Gold Gala will be held on Saturday, November 10, 2018, here in New Orleans so save-the-date.
