The star leads them to Jesus' home in the town, where they worship him and give him gifts. The wise men are then given a divine warning not to return to Herod, so they return home by a different route. Many Christians believe the star was a miraculous sign. Some theologians claimed that the star fulfilled a prophecy, known as the Star Prophecy. The significance of the 14 points on the star is to represent the three sets of 14 generations in the genealogy of Jesus Christ. The first 14 from Abraham to David, then 14 from David to the Babylonian captivity, then 14 more to Jesus. REFLECTION: Have you heard it said that God writes straight with crooked lines? You can look into the long genealogy in the Gospel that traces the descendsents from Abraham to Jesus and still not always see the straight line we expect. Making a study of this line can cause you to follow a path that was certainly not always straight. As many questions as that might bring to your mind, how about looking into the most recent year of 2020 and the challenges we have faced. Covid-19 has certainly been one that has moved all of us from our straight line of life. For each of us, we can come up with those things that have pushed us off of the straight line for a time this year and caused us to adjust our path in life. What is most important now, as we look at Christmas 2020, is that the celebration of the birth of Christ is a reminder that God has been faithful to us through it all. He has stood right with us on our crooked path this year, and while we may have stumbled and tripped along the way, and maybe even fallen due to illness, death of a loved one, job loss, or so many other things, this Christmas is a time for us to look at the hope that God is providing for us. With all of our flaws and all of our mis-steps, we are able to sit back and know that through it all, God has never abandoned us. We are His children and His love for each of us is true and never ending. This Christmas, take time to look forward to the straight line that God has laid out in your life. Pause from looking back on the crooked path that we have all traveled. God has shown through irrefutable evidence from Abraham to Jesus, from Jesus to the very church and parish family you celebrate the birth of Christ with this year, that He is not bothered by the crooked lines in our life nor will be ever leave us wandering without his caring, mercy and love on the crooked paths. God sees only where the lines lead and that is to the glory and wonder of salvation with Him for all eternity. Our hope is in Jesus Christ who came to us this day to restore all the blessings that are our heritage. Stay on the path, straight, narrow, wide or crooked and He will reveal His blessings upon all of us in this wonderful world. Have a Blessed Christmas. Pax et bonum (Peace and Goodness) Deacon Jim Patera

4 Background on the Gospel Reading Luke 2:22-40 Today the Church celebrates the Feast of the Holy Family. This celebration is assigned to the Sunday within the octave of Christmas. The Gospel for today is taken from the Gospel according to Luke and is part of Luke s Infancy Narrative. Today s Gospel describes the presentation of the child Jesus in the Temple and shows Joseph and Mary as devout Jews, following the prescriptions of the Law of Moses. The Gospel alludes to several aspects of the Law of Moses: circumcision, the dedication of the firstborn son to the Lord, and the purification of a woman after childbirth. According to the Law of Moses as presented in the Book of Leviticus, a woman was considered ritually unclean during her menstrual period and for a prescribed period of time following the birth of a child. After the birth of a son, a woman was considered ritually unclean for 40 days. After the birth of a daughter, a woman was considered unclean for 80 days. In order to be restored to ritual purity, a Jewish woman performed the appropriate rites of purification and made the prescribed ritual offering. Today s Gospel notes that Jesus was circumcised on the eighth day after his birth, in accordance with the Mosaic Law. At that time, he was called Jesus, the name he was given by the angel Gabriel. On the 40th day after Jesus birth, Mary performed the appropriate purification rites and made her offering at the Temple. Although the Law of Moses required an offering of a lamb, those who could not afford a lamb could substitute two turtledoves or two pigeons. In this scene, Luke identifies Joseph and Mary as being poor, and indeed throughout Luke s Gospel, Jesus will show special concern for the poor. Another Jewish rite referenced in this Gospel is the dedication of the firstborn son to the Lord. In remembrance of the feast of Passover, when the firstborn children of the Israelites in Egypt were saved from death, the Law of Moses prescribed that all firstborn males of Israel should be consecrated to the Lord. In this tradition, Mary and Joseph present the infant Jesus in the Temple in Jerusalem. In Jerusalem, Luke reports that Mary and Joseph encounter two devout Jews, Simeon and Anna, who recognize the infant Jesus as the fulfillment of Israel s hope for redemption. In Simeon s words we find a prediction of Mary s witnessing of Jesus death on the cross. The Canticle of Simeon, also called by its Latin name, Nunc Dimitis, is prayed at night prayer, or compline, during the Liturgy of the Hours. Taken from Loyola Press Sunday Connection Homily Notes: What did I hear that I would like to remember or think about later???
