1 Telephone: Web: Connect: Newsletter Issue 8: 3 June 2021 SMS Absences to: FROM THE PRINCIPAL S DESK Dear Parents, Carers and Community Members Cross Country On Tuesday, we were very fortunate to have some fabulous weather to run our annual Faction Cross Country event. It was wonderful to see all of our Bannister Creek students participate with such enthusiasm. A highlight of the day was the fabulous sportsmanship that was shown, with the help and encouragement shown between participants. All participating students earn points towards their faction and I am pleased to say that it was a very tight competition between our 4 factions. Avon faction were the overall winners, captains Samuel and Justin accepted the shield with a great deal of enthusiasm. I would like to thank our physical education teachers, Mrs. Rowlands and Mr. Paul for setting up and running such a successful competition. Special thanks to the community who turned up in such large numbers to cheer along all the students. Arrival at School It has come to the attention of school staff that some students are arriving on school grounds well before the recommended time of 8:15am. At Bannister Creek, we ask that students arrive at school between 8:15am and 8:30am, which is the time classroom doors open. If you need to drop your students off at school before 8:15am, we request that you book them into our out of school hours care provider Camp Australia. For further information, or to make a booking, call or visit the website Uniforms Bannister Creek Primary takes great pride in the presentation of our school and this includes the uniform that is worn by our students. As we head into the colder months, I would like to remind our school community that the student uniform guidelines require a plain black jumper or branded Bannister Creek jacket. It is not appropriate for students to be wearing different coloured jumpers or black jumpers emblazoned with sports logos or other decoration. The school has some second hand jumpers available at a very cheap price from the Front Office and our uniform provider, Uniform Concepts (30 Kembla Way, Willetton), also has plenty of stock. I have also noticed that our lost property containers in the block wet areas are overflowing with unclaimed jumpers. Please label all jumpers (and other belongings) with your child s name. This greatly helps in the return of lost property. Kind Regards Travis Miller PRINCIPAL COMING EVENTS Fri, 4 Jun Mon, 7 June School Development Day: Students do not attend WA Day Public Holiday Thu, 10 Jun Assembly hosted by Room 8 Mon, 14 Jun Thu, 17 Jun Fri, 18 Jun Tue, 22 Jun Wed, 23 Jun School Board Meeting: 3:15pm, Staffroom School Photos - return photo envelopes today School Photos - return photo envelopes today Baldja Waagkiny Meeting: 2:00pm Interschool Winter Carnival Thu, 24 Jun Assembly hosted by Room 18

2 SCHOOL BOARD As you would have seen on Connect, the BCPS School Board intends to raise the profile of our school in the community by nominating one or more of our staff members for this year s WA Education Awards. There are numerous categories and we would like members of our school community to put forward nominations. The School Board will use these nominations to make the final decision on our school nominations. The categories are detailed on the flyer in Connect. If you would like to make a nomination, please click on the following link: RaA4P3Ru0yDsLdutDYWJzVnEUYzsrtPlg2gu9yDXtxUOEc5WkZFUlpXT1A5T01EOEY2N09CRTdXMy4u Dr Paul Kebble, School Board Chair BEING THERE - OUR 95% ATTENDANCE TARGET It is important to know that attendance patterns and attitudes to school and learning are formed early in life. Research into school attendance has demonstrated that students with low school attendance have poorer life outcomes. This means it is absolutely critical for primary school children to get into good habits about school attendance. The school is always willing to help with attendance issues, please contact Mr. Christie, our Student Services Deputy, if you need to discuss your child s attendance. YEAR 4 & 5 PUPPET WORKSHOPS This week, the Year 4 and 5 students attended a Junk Puppet Workshop incursion, held in Ibis block. The students learned to create puppets using recycled materials. This experience will set them up to be successful when crafting their own puppets for their upcoming HASS projects. A special thank you to Mrs Hinchcliffe for making all of the arrangements with the Spare Parts Puppet Theatre. 5 Warm greetings from the Art Room. ART NEWS We began the year with a whole school Harmony portrait project which was on display at the Harmony Picnic in Term 1. It was so great to have staff and community members also creating their own portraits to enrich and support our collaborative effort. Our junior classes have had great fun blowing paint, painting trees and exploring the colours of nature. They have been drawing interesting shapes, as well as painting and ripping paper to make beautiful collage birds, puppies and kittens. They have been experimenting with warm and cool colours and mixing exciting new colours. Students across all levels have been learning about various artists from history. The students have explored Matisse s organic cut out collages, Mondrian s geometric designs in primary colours, and the beautiful colourful pop art style of Wayne Thiebaud. Gaining inspiration from these artists, the students have created their own amazing art pieces. The Year 3 and 4 classes have been developing their drawing skills, particularly with geometric shapes and forms in cityscapes and abstract designs. They have also been experimenting with the properties of various paints and developing techniques such as applying a wash and blending colours. Working with the theme of Reflections, Year 5 students examined various artworks and then applied their own ideas to create their own water reflections art. To achieve their desired effect, they used pallet knives, brushes, sponges and other items. The Year 6 classes have responded to the Artworks of Wayne Thiebaud to create their own Geometric pastel art. Some students have reproduced these ideas in a beautiful collaborative mural which will be displayed in the school canteen window. Students have really enjoyed making art that integrates with their classroom activities. For example, students painted their own tree for their family tree activity. Lessons which involved drawing geometric cityscapes are reinforcing classroom Geometry maths programs. Students in Years 4 and 5 are learning charcoal techniques to enable them to draw their portrait of an important Australian as part of their HASS program. Finally as part of the Year 6 Astronomy night, students had the opportunity to create a stunning spray art mural depicting a galaxy of planets.
