Rehabilitation International Nordic presentation April 2011

History of RI Rehabilitation International (RI) is a longstanding, worldwide network of people with disabilities, service providers, professionals, academics and government agencies working to improve the quality of life of people with disabilities.
Overall the Convention: Has a number of themes including: Community inclusion Changing attitudes Accessibility Has no new rights for disabled people Is a paradigm shift
General principles: Dignity Individual autonomy Non-discrimination Full and effective participation in society Inclusion in society Accessibility Equality of opportunity Equality between men and women Respect for children
Rights in the Convention: Reinforces right to: Work Education Access to and be protected by the legal system Make your own decisions Be a part of your community Be informed Participate in cultural life Applies to all disabled people, whether rural or urban or from a developed or developing country
Article 26 - Habilitation and rehabilitation States Parties shall: take effective and appropriate measures, including through peer support, to enable persons with disabilities to attain and maintain maximum independence., and full inclusion and participation in all aspects of life. - organize, strengthen and extend comprehensive habilitation and rehabilitation services and programmes, a) Early intervention with a multidisciplinary assessment of individual needs and strengths; b) close as possible to their own communities, including in rural areas. Promote the professional staff development Promote the availability, knowledge and use of assistive devices and technologies

Value of rehabilitation Franklin Roosevelt, who knew what rehabilitation could mean to someone with a disability, wrote the following to the Secretary of War in 1944: "No overseas casualty [should] be discharged from the armed forces until he has received the maximum benefit of hospitalization and convalescent facilities, which must include physical and psychological rehabilitation, vocational guidance, prevocational training, and resocialization."
Rehabilitation Problem-solving, educative and collaborative process aimed at restoring well being and independence.
Rehabilitation Art of rehabilitation is understanding the dual basis of action science of nature and chaos of human behaviour
Consideration It s much more important to know what sort of person has the disease than what sort of disease the person has Sir William Osler,
Once a person overcomes a disability through his own courage, determination and hard work, he has a depth of spirit you and I know little about. This is a branch of medicine in which the patient has more power than the doctor in setting the limits and possibilities (The Father of Rehabilitation, Dr. Howard Rusk)
ICF Interaction of Components Health Condition (Disorder/Disease) Body Function Activity Participation & Structure Environmental Factors Personal Factors
How do you know... The science of indicators You are making progress?...reaching your goals??...achieving what you set out to achieve? Got to know where you WERE and where you are NOW Got to know what s better or worse Got to be able to measure the gap between THEN and NOW
Determinants of health education employment income housing access to medical and related services 16
Myths re Disability Severity and extent of disability should first be assessed because this predicts employment outcomes. Wait until someone has recovered before considering employment
The facts the two strongest predictors of employment success are: The person s motivation (they want assistance); The nature of the employment service provided. However, extent of disability and disadvantage can predict the intensity and the cost of the assistance needed.
