2 Program Installation Thank you for choosing Sync Butler, the revolutionary and intuitive file synchronisation software. We hope Sync Butler will make it easier to keep your files in sync. Sync Butler has several system requirements that need to be met before it can run smoothly. These are covered below. System Requirement Computer: Intel Pentium GHz (Compatible and/or better), 128 MB RAM on top of Operating System requirements. Display: Capable of displaying a resolution of 1024 x 768. Permanent Storage: Requires a maximum of 20MB for records. Operating System (32/64-bit): Only Windows XP (Service Pack 3), Vista (Service Pack 2) and 7 are supported. Microsoft.NET Framework version 3.5 SP1 is required too. Installation Guide Please download the latest copy of Sync Butler at Error! Reference source not Quick Start When you start the program, you are presented with the Welcome Screen (Figure 1). The downloaded package can be extracted anywhere in your computer. As it is not a portable software, please do not save it to your memory drive and run the software from there (please see Could I run the software from my portable storage? for more information). Simply double-click on Sync Butler program to start it. Please do the same when you need to start the program again. Figure 1 - Welcome Page Please give the computer you are working a name. Ideally, it should be unique amongst the systems you will be using with Sync Butler. When you click on Name it!, a quick tutorial appears. Please read it to understand what Sync Butler does! What if I copied the program folder to another place after running it once? How do I uninstall or remove Sync Butler? Why should I use a unique name for the systems I am using Sync Butler on? 1

3 Error! Reference source not When the tutorial ends, you will be brought to the Home Page screen. Figure 3 - Partnership Created Page Figure 2 - Home Page From this page, you will be able to access the features of Sync Butler. You may click on the buttons in the top navigation bar to go where you wish to. For now, please click on Start Syncing to begin file synchronisation. A wizard will walk you through the steps to create a partnership. You may wish to plug in a portable storage device at this point to store files copied from your computer. The portable storage device may also be selected as one folder (target) in the Synchronisation partnership. Upon success creation of a synchronisation partnership, you may select the option to Sync this Partnership. Sync Butler will lead you to the Sync Status page. When you select Yes to synchronise partnership prompt, Sync Butler will automatically update the two folders in the partnership. Sync Butler will try its best to make the two folders identical. If Sync Butler is unable to determine the correct action to resolve the differences (i.e., there are files with the same name but with different content), Sync Butler will list them in the Sync Status page. 2

4 Error! Reference source not You may instruct Sync Butler how to proceed by simply selecting the correct action to take. For example, if you wish to select (take) the file from the second folder and copy it to the first folder, select Copy to Folder 1. Preview Page Figure 4 - Conflicts Page Shiny New Toy Sync Butler has a new trick up its sleeves. Click on Sync Butler, Sync! button near the top of the screen to access the new feature. When this feature is turned on, it will automatically select and copy files you have worked on recently to your portable storage device. So you will never miss a new file when you are working somewhere else! One Sync a Day... Lastly, to keep the files in the partnership in sync, just run Sync Butler daily and select Start Sync. Sync Butler will do its best to keep your files in sync! Why can t Sync Butler always automatically decide which files to copy or delete? What is an Issue? 3

5 Frequently Asked Questions Could I run the software from my portable storage? Sync Butler saves and uses personalised settings for each of your computers. It saves them in the program folder. These settings are not transferrable or applicable to other systems. As such, you should not run it off a portable storage device as it will not be able to load the settings correctly and may behave incorrectly. How do I uninstall or remove Sync Butler? Sync Butler comes with an uninstaller that you may use to clean up any changes it made to your system. Simply click on the icon Sync Butler Uninstaller.exe to complete the uninstallation What if I copied the program folder to another place after running it once? Yes you may. It does not matter where you run Sync Butler from. However, there is a minor limitation. As it is not a portable software, you will need to download and keep a different copy of the program in the computers you intend to use Sync Butler on. Sync Butler requires a.butler file to store information about files and folders in the partnership. See (Privacy Concern) What is information is kept by Sync Butler for each partnership? for more information. Error! Reference source not Why can t Sync Butler always automatically decide which files to copy or delete? While Sync Butler is capable of resolving very very large percentage of the issues it detects when trying to sync the folder, it cannot however, decide what to do in the following scenarios: When the same file in the two folders are both modified. Sync Butler does not know which copy is the correct revision that the user wants to keep. When the same file has been deleted on one side and modified on the other side, Sync Butler will not know what action to take. What is a Issue? An issues is reported by Sync Butler when it encounters two files that share the same name. It does not know which is the correct revision to keep and this is brought to the user s attention so the user may decide which copy to keep. Why should I use a unique name for the systems I am using Sync Butler on? Sync Butler, Sync! uses this name as the folder that stores copied files it syncs from the system. If there are more than one computer with the same name, then only the files copied by the last system to use Sync Butler, Sync! will remain. Why doesn t Sync Butler work with my computer? Please ensure that your system meets the minimal requirement of Sync Butler. In additional, the service, Window Management Instrument needs to be running on your computer. Of course, this would apply if all the systems use the same portable storage device with Sync Butler, Sync!. 4
