1 Student Procedures List OSU, College of Veterinary Medicine All of the procedures in the General Procedures List and the five required intra-abdominal or intrathoracic surgeries on live animals requirement must be completed before graduation. Their completion will assure veterinary employers that you have performed a number of basic techniques which are required for entry level practice. You must have a veterinarian or technician who observes you perform the procedure initial the booklet. For procedures required to be performed in core courses, the course number is listed and you do not have to have that item signed. If you take an elective in which the procedure was required of all students, put in the number of the elective. It doesn t need to be initialed. The booklet must be submitted to the Associate Dean for Student and Academic Affairs for approval before May 1, If you have items that are incomplete it will be handed back to you so the procedures can be completed before graduation. Spot testing may be done on items checked off by the student. You can perform the procedures during required courses, electives or on preceptorships. Five Recovery Surgeries Each student is required to perform five (5) intra-abdominal or intra-thoracic recovery surgeries on live animals before receiving the DVM degree. The student must be the primary surgeon on each of these operations. The surgeries must be performed under the supervision of a veterinarian during the 3rd or 4th year of veterinary school. Opportunities to perform these surgeries include: Small Animal Surgery Laboratory, Clinical Small Animal Surgery Service, Clinical Large Animal Surgery, Rural Veterinary Practice, Sheep and Goat Medicine and Surgery elective, OHS Small Animal Primary Care, and preceptorships. To verify the surgeries were performed, the student must list the date, course number, and type of surgery. No signature is needed. Species Proficiency Procedures Student Procedures List OSU, College of Veterinary Medicine This booklet contains four procedure lists that are color coded. You will note that these include General Procedures, Ruminant Proficiency Procedures, Equine Proficiency Procedures, and Small Animal Proficiency Procedures. Capital letters listed at the left of each procedure correspond to courses which provide the greatest opportunity to perform that procedure. The procedures in the specific proficiency areas are not required for graduation, but are to increase your experience and confidence in more defined species. You may attempt to complete as many and varied of these procedures as you desire. Their completion can only enhance your education. You must take the initiative in performing these specialized procedures since there may not be enough cases for all students to perform all the procedures for each species. For the surgical procedures, only the surgeon and assistant can get credit, not the anesthetist who will not have hands-on experience, and should be paying attention to anesthesia.
