Gentle Drying under Vacuum Pressure mbar Temperature C Pressure mbar Drying under vacuum is a widely used thermal process in many branches. The objective of this process is to gently dry high quality products containing water or solvents without modifying the product characteristics. During vacuum drying, the overall pressure in the drying oven is reduced so that water or solvents start changing from the liquid to the vapor phase at low temperatures. The drying process can be optimized by careful control of the heat and pressure. As a matter of principle, a vacuum drying system consists of a drying oven with heating system, a vacuum pump assembly designed specifically for the drying process and a matching control. The heated shelves and chamber walls merge without joints subdividing the interior into individual charging chambers. All surfaces in the product area are visible and optimally suited for use of a CIP cleaning device (CIP = Cleaning In Place). All parts of the vacuum chamber coming into contact with the product consist of high quality stainless steel or special material such as Hastelloy, Inconel or Titanium. The surfaces are ground and polished. The shelves and ceiling are designed with double walls. Heating is accomplished with hot water or thermal oil. The heated shelves and chamber walls merge without joints subdividing the interior into individual charging chambers. The front side of the vacuum drying oven is equipped with a circumferential mounting frame for wall installation; the frame is welded tightly to the vacuum chamber. The vacuum drying oven is tested for leakage with helium or using the pressure increase method. This test is confirmed by a certificate. Surfaces and walls are doublewalled, all corners are rounded. 11 Trocknungs_Prozess_engl_04_ :19 Uhr Seite 11 Vacuum Drying Oven, VSD Clean and simple CIP cleaning device for the VSD This device consists primarely of a cleaning lance with driven spray heads and an electric or pneumatic drive. The cleaning lance is located in the vacuum chamber between the door and shelves; the drive is located on top of the oven. The design of the cleaning lance ensures that every point in the vacuum chamber is sprayed and thereby cleaned. Before cleaning, the lance can be installed with a few simple manipulations, after completion of the cleaning operation, it is dried together with the vacuum drying oven and can then be removed. Installation and function The cleaning lance is connected using a threaded pipe flange in the ceiling area. The drive moves the cleaning lance around its vertical axis. The spray heads turn around their horizontal axis during this process. Each compartment has a separate spray head. One spray head can also be used for two compartments depending on the chamber version and application. In this case, the cleaning lance is also moved vertically. This drying oven consists of an extensive chamber with easily removable inserts in the form of doublewall heating plates. The inserts can be heated or cooled. The connections lead through the rear wall and are vacuumtight. If desired by the customer, the side walls as well as floor, ceiling and door can also be heated. This concept allows production of sizes with shelf area of up to approx. 50 m2 and chamber volumes of 8 m3. The production chamber can be executed to meet GMP approval to the greatest extent. Other versions such as pushthrough types, as well as versions for wall installation or explosionhazard can also be realized with this model. Design features of the VT The vacuum drying oven is suitable for setup and operation in explosionhazard areas. All parts of the vacuum chamber coming into contact with the product consist of high quality stainless steel or special material such as Hastelloy, Inconel or Titanium. The surfaces are ground and polished. The front side of the vacuum drying oven is equipped with a circumferential mounting frame for wall installation; the wall is welded tightly to the vacuum chamber. The removable inserts for hot water or thermal oil are designed with double walls and with one inlet and outlet flange each running through the rear wall and sealed vacuumtight. The vacuum drying oven is tested for leakage with helium or using the pressure increase method. This test is confirmed by a test certificate. The vacuum chamber has a finely processed door flange. The door is equipped with a circumferential, temperatureresistant round seal. The door suspension is equipped with a double joint hinge to ensure that the door seal makes proper contact without deformation of the Oring. The interior has rounded corners. As an option, this vacuum drying oven can also be offered with electrically heated inserts or with electrically heated inner container. 14

17 Trocknungs_Prozess_engl_04_ :22 Uhr Seite 17 Clever Combination Vacuum Circulating Air Drying Oven, VUT If a product, which is contained in a product carrier or has poor heat coupling via heat conduction due to its own structure, is to be dried under vacuum, the combination of two different types of drying vacuum plus circulating air is most practical. The product is heated up to a certain temperature by the circulating air. Then the product chamber is evacuated allowing evaporation or drying. This procedure can be repeated a number of times depending on the drying curve and desired results. 20 Trocknungs_Prozess_engl_04_ :24 Uhr Seite 20 Dependable Drying Circulating Air Drying Oven with External Solvent Recovery System Design according to guideline EG (ATEX 100a), suitable for operation in zone 1, temperature class T1T4. Vacuum processes are normally used to dry products containing solvents or waterbased moisture. However, as not all products are suitable for drying in a vacuum, a new forcedair dryer with a very high solvent recovery rate has been developed for use at atmospheric pressure. In contrast to other designs, external recovery allows you to condense, collect and dispose of solvents even if they are potentially explosive. The course of the drying process as follows: A loading cart, which contains the product trays, is used to load the product chamber in the dryer. A separate support cart can be used to avoid contamination when the loading cart is being moved to and in the dryer. After loading, the internal chamber is purged with inert gas until the explosive concentration falls below the ignition point. The fans and heater are then turned on, and the drying process starts. The gas atmosphere that now contains solvents can be fed to the external condenser in partial flow mode. The condensed vapor is collected in an demister unit and moved to a secure container. Because the system uses a closed cycle, the remaining partial flow is returned to the system. Another advantage of external recovery compared to internal recovery is that the drying temperature in the forcedair oven is not affected by the condensation process. This has a significant effect on uniform drying of a complete batch. Option By drying aqueous products the oven can be used by circulating air with adjustable fresh air rate.
