6 IT HAPPENED TO ME Tony Russell describes how the sight of a tiger in Nepal 500 kilos plus and four meters long will stay with him forever Last year I went to Nepal for three months to work in a hospital. I think it s important to see as much of a country as you can, but it is difficult to travel around Nepal. The hospital let me have a few days holiday so I decided to go into the jungle and I asked a Nepalese guide, Kamal Rai, to go with me. We started preparing for the trip at six in the morning, and left camp with two elephants carrying our equipment. It was hot, but Kamal made me wear shoes and trousers to protect me from snakes. In the jungle there was a lot of wildlife, but we were trying to find big cats, especially tigers. We climbed onto the elephant s back to get a better view, but it is unusual to find tigers in the afternoon because they sleep in the heat of the day. Then, in the distance, we saw a tiger, and Kamal told me to be very quiet. We crept nearer and found a dead deer, still bleeding. This was the tiger s lunch! Suddenly I started to be very frightened. We heard the tiger a second before we saw it. It jumped out like a flash of lightning, five hundred kilos plus and four metres long. I looked into his eyes and face, and saw right down the animal s throat. It grabbed Kamal s leg between its teeth but I managed to pull Kamal away. One of our elephants ran at the tiger and made it go back into the grass, so we quickly escaped to let the tiger eat its lunch. Different kinds of fast food BURGERS AND THE USA For many people around the world a burger is more than just food it is a symbol of the USA and its way of life. How did it all start? A White Castle started in 1921 and was the first restaurant company that sold burgers. In these restaurants, the most important thing was to prepare the food quickly and easily. The cook did not have to be an expert. It was also the first company to use cardboard boxes and cups. B In the 1940s, the car was becoming more and more important to Americans. In new drive-in restaurants, people stayed in their cars and waiters brought the food out to them. These drive-in restaurants became very popular with American teenagers. C In 1940 two brothers, Richard and Maurice McDonald opened a drive-in burger bar in California. Eight years later they made some changes to the McDonalds restaurant. People had to collect their own food. The food arrived quickly and the prices were cheap. D Today McDonalds is the top fast food company in the USA. White Castle is still quite popular, but is not as big as many other fast food companies. And, of course, burgers are not the only kind of fast food that people can buy.
