1 Sustainable Cities São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte, September 2012 Headed by Their Royal Highnesses the Crown Prince Couple of Denmark Join the Danish business delegation headed by HRH the Crown Prince and HRH the Crown Princess of Denmark to Brazil from September During the visit, Their Royal Highnesses will participate in a series of business and cultural events with the purpose of promoting Denmark and Danish businesses in Brazil. The promotional activities within the urban development sector scheduled for the visit offer a unique opportunity for two Danish companies within four different areas that have been selected by the Municipalities of Brazil s largest cities. The four sectors are:» Urban Drainage Systems;» Waste Handling, Recycling and Waste-to-Energy Technologies;» Housing and Architecture (including energy efficiency);» Cycling Solutions for Cities. The city-to-city seminars will be held jointly between each of the Brazilian municipalities - São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro and Belo Horizonte - and the Municipality of Copenhagen. THE BACKGROUND Although Brazil and Denmark are geographically very far from each other, Brazil offers excellent export opportunities for Danish companies across various sectors. The need to increase the quality of life of a growing and wealthier population in the cities, as well as to cope with environmental challenges posed by rapid economic growth in these areas, which has created a growing market for environmentally friendly, creative and intelligent solutions in Brazil. This increasing demand for energy efficient and new sustainable technologies offers many business opportunities for Danish companies. Brazil is the world s 6th largest economy, already ahead of Italy and the UK, and is expected to surpass France in the upcoming years. The Brazilian economy had a very quick recovery from the global financial crisis and has represented a strong driver of the world s economic growth in the past years. The economy is expected to grow by 3.5 percent to 4 percent in 2012, largely driven by the increase of the domestic market, which has benefited from a booming middle class of 95 million people. Half of Brazil s population now possess a purchasing power equivalent to some developed countries. In 2011, Danish exports to Brazil reached more than DKK 4.5 billion, which is well above pre-crisis level. There are strong indications that the demand for environmentally friendly solutions in urban areas could nurture an enduring trade trend between both countries, mainly due to an urgent need to upgrade and improve vital urban infrastructure assets such as water mains, waste handling facilities, cycling planning, energy efficient housing and buildings. In a unique partnership with the local municipalities, the local Trade Council will organise one seminar in each city under the headline of Sustainable Cities. These seminars will be officially opened by HRH The Crown Prince of Denmark together with the mayor of each municipality. You will have the opportunity to speak about a successful story to a selected audience of public and private companies, as well as municipal decision makers from various agencies and administration levels.
