2 Why Uniforms? Arguments in Favor: School uniforms improve academic performance because they create an equal and orderly atmosphere. They reduce distractions imposed by clothing items. School uniforms prevent the formation of cliques or gangs and reduce the influence of peer pressure, all based on the physical appearance of students. School uniforms remove the socio-economic hierarchy among students that can be reflected in their choice of clothing; how much a garment cost or where it was bought. Teachers Count - Uniform Issues

4 Pinellas County Elementary Uniform Policies Currently in Pinellas County, 27 out of our 74 elementary schools (36%) have uniform policies in place. The majority are mandatory. A few are partial (pertaining only to shorts) and two are voluntary, meaning that the school encourages the wearing of uniforms, but it is not mandatory.
5 Mandatory Uniform Policy With a mandatory uniform policy in place, students are required to wear the designated school uniform on a regular daily basis. The uniform consists of pants, shorts, skirts, skorts, jumpers, or dresses and shirts in certain colors. Some schools have also included styles and colors of shoes and socks. Colors of winter outerwear allowed in the classroom are also defined. Coats or sweaters worn to school may be any color, but cannot be worn inside of the classroom if they do not adhere to the uniform standards.

7 Uniform Exceptions Most schools with mandatory uniform policies have designated dress down days. These include: School Picture days The last school day before a break such as Thanksgiving, Christmas, and Spring Break Holidays such as Halloween, Valentine s Day, St. Patrick s Day when there is school School Spirit Days Fridays or other specially designated days throughout the year
8 Uniform Suppliers School uniforms are readily available at many retailers throughout the school year, such as Bealls, Kmart/Sears, JC Penney, Target, and Wal-mart. Designated uniform stores, such as Scrubs N Stuff, carry school uniforms, and will partner with the school to return a portion of the sales revenue to the school. Major retailers offer school uniform sections on their websites. Most local thrift stores carry gently used school uniforms at very reasonable prices. The school can have a designated clothing swap shop. Students can trade in gently used clothing that they have outgrown for larger sizes. This can be free or low-cost.
