1 ADAM AND EVE SINNED LIFE POINT: God knew that people would sin, so He planned to send the Savior. LEADER BIBLE STUDY CREATION LEVEL OF BIBLICAL LEARNING God is still at work in His creation and cares what happens in it. BIBLE PASSAGE 3 WEEKLY BIBLE VERSE Be careful to do as the Lord your God has commanded you; you are not to turn aside to the right or the left. Deuteronomy 5:32 UNIT VERSE In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. 1:1 Do you swear to tell the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth? Familiar words in any court, but one might ask, What is truth? Truth is defined as the actual state of reality. Telling the truth is stating what is or was actually real. Truth is an essential characteristic of God. His Word is always indisputably true. Adam and Eve enjoyed a perfect environment in the garden of Eden. God provided everything they needed. They were free to do whatever they wanted with one exception: they were not to eat from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. The sly serpent, however, planted a seed of doubt in the woman s mind. He told her that if they ate from the tree they would not die but would become like Him. Their eyes would be open, and they would know good and evil. The serpent (identified as Satan in Rev. 12:9) attacked God s Word saying it could not be trusted. He implied that God just wanted to keep mankind from being like Him. Instead of rebuking the serpent, Eve ate the fruit of the tree and gave some to Adam. Part of what the serpent said was true: their eyes were indeed opened, but not to be like God. The consequences were soon manifest. When God came looking for them, they hid. When He confronted them, they tried to pin the guilt on someone else. Adam blamed God and Eve. Eve blamed the serpent. God cursed the serpent and issued judgment on the couple: they were expelled from the garden; the woman would suffer in childbirth; and the man would labor to grow crops for food. God then declared they would indeed die and return to the dust. How many versions of any story can be true? Explain. How are many people still being deceived about God s Word? NOTE: Downloadable versions of items identified as CD are available in the Music and Print Extras Bundle. Items identified as DVD are available in the Digital Video Bundle. SUGGESTED DATE: week of September 18 Additional training for Bible Studies for Life: Kids available at ministrygrid.com/web/biblestudiesforlife. 20 Unit 1,

2 PRACTICE BIBLE SKILLS Time Line: Week Three, Time Line Events: Week Three (Pack Items 3, 4) 1. Place the Time Line: Week Three and Time Line Events faceup on the table. 2. Direct preteens attention to the focal wall. Invite a volunteer to read the Time Line events from the past two weeks. 3. Instruct kids to complete the third piece of the time line by reading the Scripture references on the time line, describing each event, and gluing them to the correct location. 4. Place the time line on the focal wall, in the correct position, after the previous sections. 5. As time allows, challenge preteens to share information they know about the stories on the time line. Encourage preteens, sharing that you are proud of them for learning about the Bible. INTRODUCTORY ACTIVITY Circle Game 1. Explain to preteens that they will play a game. Instruct each person to state his name, what he wants to be, and how he will prepare for his future. (Example: The first preteen could say, My name is Mary. I want to be a teacher, and I m going to prepare for my future by tutoring children. ) The second person should state his plans as well as repeat Mary s plans. Continue until each preteen has had a turn or until time runs out. 2. Choose one preteen to begin. Allow preteens to help each other as they work their way around the room. 3. Ask: Did you know someone else made plans for you long before you were born? 4. Explain that when God made people, He also made plans for our future! He knew people would sin, and He knew we would need a Savior. Share that from the beginning of the world, God s plan for our future was Jesus! 5. Show the Adam and Eve Sinned: Introduction video for the session. Pack Items 3, 4 glue dots, tape DVD No special preparation needed. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE PRETEENS 21

3 STUDY THE BIBLE GETTING TO THE POINT God s Amazing World Title Banner (Pack Item 1) Direct preteens attention to the title banner. Invite preteens to share things they have learned thus far in the unit. Explain that preteens will learn that God knows all things that have happened in the past and all things that will happen in the future. Pack Items 1, 2 Teaching Picture 3 Activity Pages DVD West Africa Photos (CD) yarn, 2 clipboards, markers, copy paper, stopwatch or timer blue and green sticky notes Write the review questions (page 90) on the blue sticky notes and the answers on green sticky notes. Note: If you have more preteens than questions and answers, play again allowing each one to have a turn. index cards Write A, B, or C on individual cards. Prepare enough so that each preteen can have 1 of each. Option: If possible, order a Bible Storying Scarf ($10) from imbresources.org or by calling (800) LOOK IN THE BOOK Teaching Picture 3, Sin in the Garden (Activity Page) Display the Teaching Picture. Point preteens attention to the Bible people in the picture, and guide them to think about what their plan might have been. Form three groups. Assign each group a section of Sin in the Garden on the Activity Page. (Eve 3:1-6,13,16; Adam 3:6-12,17-19; Serpent 3:1-5,14-15) Lead groups to read 3 and then complete their portion of the activity. Encourage groups to choose a volunteer, and lead them to report their findings. Explain that even though God created a perfect world, He knew people would sin. He had a plan in place for us from the very beginning. ABCs of Becoming a Christian Guide preteens to realize that, just like Adam and Eve, people today are tempted to disobey God. Ask: What are some areas in which preteens can be tempted to disobey God? Explain that our sin separates us from God, and God wants us to have a relationship with Him. Because God knew people would sin, He provided a way for us to be forgiven and welcomed into God s family for eternity. Give each preteen a card. Invite volunteers to share what they think the ABCs of Becoming a Christian are. Ensure all Admit, Believe, and Confess are discussed. Use Sharing the Gospel with Kids (page 98) as you share how to become a Christian with the group. Encourage preteens to write the word on the appropriate card and to list at least one Scripture reference on each card they have. Tell preteens you will be glad to talk with any of them after the session if they would like to know more about becoming a Christian. Invite preteens to keep their cards in their wallet or purse so they can share the information with a friend or family member who asks them about Jesus. 22 Unit 1,

4 LIFE POINT God knew that people would sin, so He planned to send the Savior. REVIEW CHALLENGE Human Connect the Dots Distribute sticky notes, and guide them to stick the notes on their clothing. Explain that preteens will match the questions with the correct answers by connecting them with yarn. Instruct preteens to stand around the room. Invite a volunteer with a question on his sticky note to begin. Give her the yarn and instruct her to say the question aloud. Next, instruct her to toss the yarn to the preteen who calls out the correct answer. Repeat until all the questions have been answered correctly. Encourage preteens to pass the yarn to someone who hasn t had it. UNIT VERSE CHALLENGE Pass It On, 1:1 Unit Verse (Pack Item 2) Enlist a preteen to say 1:1 aloud. Form two teams, and guide them to stand in a line. Give each team a clipboard, a piece of paper, and a marker. Explain that teams will to race to see which can write the Unit Verse legibly in the shortest amount of time. Instruct teams to begin at the front of the line with each preteen writing one word of the verse before handing it on to the next person. Direct teams to begin. Congratulate teams with the fastest time. Option: Memorize the Weekly Bible Verse: Deuteronomy 5:32. MISSIONS Show the Storying Cloth photos. Explain that this cloth is an important tool for Christians who are teaching the Bible. Each block represents a story from the Bible. It starts with the creation of the world and ends with stories about Jesus. If you have an actual storying cloth, let preteens identify Bible stories they recognize from the pictures. Call for several volunteers to pray for Kimberly Cain and other Christian workers in West Africa. APPLY THE BIBLE AND PRAY Show the Adam and Eve Sinned: Life Action video. Pray and dismiss preteens to their groups. BIBLE STUDIES FOR LIFE PRETEENS 23

8 ADAM AND EVE SINNED Adam, the first man, named his wife Eve. They lived in a beautiful garden God created. Now the serpent was tricky and said to Eve, Did God really say you can t eat from every tree in the garden? Eve said to the serpent, God said we must not eat from the tree in the middle of the garden, or even touch it, or we will die. The serpent replied, No! You will not die. God knows that when you eat it your eyes will be opened and you will be like God, knowing good and evil. Eve saw that the fruit on the tree looked delicious, and she wanted the knowledge the fruit offered. She took some of the fruit and ate it. She also gave some to Adam, who ate it, too. At that moment, their eyes were opened and they realized they were naked. So they sewed fig leaves together and made clothing for themselves. Adam and Eve heard God walking in the garden, and they hid. God called out to them, Where are you? Adam replied, I heard You and I was afraid because I was naked, so I hid. God asked Adam, Who told you that you were naked? Did you eat from the forbidden tree? Adam replied, The woman You made gave the fruit to me, and I ate it. Eve said, It was the serpent. He tricked me and I ate it. God punished the serpent saying, You are cursed more than any wild animal, and you will crawl on your belly and eat dust all your life. God punished Eve saying, You will have pain in bearing children, and your husband will rule over you. God punished Adam saying, You will have to work very hard to grow food to eat all the days of your life. God made clothing out of skins for Adam and Eve. Then God removed Adam and Eve from the garden of Eden forever. BASED ON GENESIS 3

16 Learning the Stories INTERNATIONAL MISSIONS Children all over the world are important to Jesus. He loves them and wants them to learn about Him when they are very young. Christian workers, like Kimberly Cain in West Africa, love the children like Jesus does. Sometimes Kimberly teaches kids as they sit on mats on the dusty ground. Sometimes she teaches kids at a local church where the roof is made of woven grass. That church building might not look KIMBERLY CAIN like yours, but the children in West Africa are learning the same stories from the Bible that you are! Kimberly uses a storying cloth to tell stories from the Bible. Each picture on the cloth tells a story. Kimberly tells children the story of creation and continues with stories about Jesus so children can grow up knowing Him and telling others about Him. Ways to pray for the people and missionaries in West Africa: k Pray that missionaries will be willing and able to learn the language spoken by the people so they can tell the people about Jesus. k Pray for missionaries as they adjust to a different culture in a part of the world where the temperature stays very hot all year. k Pray that the children of West Africa will learn to follow Jesus at a young age. MISSIONS STORY: WEST AFRICA Bible Studies for Life Preteens, Fall LifeWay. Published in the United States of America. Instructions: Print and use during Study the Bible, Unit 1, Session 2.
