Principles of Mobility Operator Business 1. Mobility operators offer users individual door-to-door mobility services. 2. Mobility operators integrate several transport services by utilizing open interfaces to a. the schedules, b. real-time location data, and c. payment systems of transport services, both locally and in long-distance transportation. 3. Through digital solutions users can a. search and compare the length and cost of alternative travel chains, b. book and pay for the door-to-door travel chain, as well as c. follow and get instructions on executing the travel chain. 4. Digital solutions are scalable a. to different user profiles, and b. internationally. 5. Solutions are demonstrated in a real transportation environment
Mobility as a Service requires open interfaces to transport services, including: Timetables Real-time location information Payment systems With these components Mobility Operators can seamlessly integrate transport services worldwide
THE TIME IS NOW Urbanization Sharing economy, servicizing Decreasing car ownership among young Social change: the young want to be multimodal, spontaneous and continuously connected
THE TIME IS NOW Crisis in transportation due to the increasing number of cars Utilization rate currently < 5 %, could be much more in shared use Sustainability, environmental objectives, safety Lack of funding, need for efficiency gains Major business potential Technological development
Currently, transport services are offered and subsidized separately User purchase, public subsidization of PT, and socially necessary transportation Public transport planning authorities and other transport service producers Fleet Infrastructure Data City of Helsinki Media Bank / Juho Virolainen
In MaaS, all transportation is offered and subsidized jointly through mobility operators User purchase, public subsidization of PT, and socially necessary transportation Mobility operators Public transport planning authorities and other transport service producers Fleet Infrastructure Data City of Helsinki Media Bank / Juho Virolainen
Mobility as a Service benefits USERS Strong user orientation High service quality Competitive pricing 17
Mobility as a Service benefits CITIES Less cars Less congestion and environmental disadvantages Healthier, safer and more attractive cities Re-thinking Urban Mobility, Sonja Heikkilä, Helsinki City Planning Department 18
Mobility as a Service creates BUSINESS Emerging business involving several side businesses An open ecosystem that can be easily entered Rapid deployment of innovation and modern technologies Highly increased efficiency of the transport system Transport providers can concentrate on core competencies instead of fare management, advertising, and customer service Re-thinking Urban Mobility, Sonja Heikkilä, Helsinki City Planning Department 19
WHAT IS HAPPENING AT THE MOMENT IN FINLAND? Plenty of companies engaged and more are coming 8 Tekes funded prestudy projects ongoing Several consortiums preparing pilot projects that are due the end of May 2015, piloting could begin later this year Several mobility operators established, technologies are developed Supporting actions, incl. opening of interfaces to transport services Matchmaking of companies facilitated by Tekes Other supporting programs by public organizations (e.g., Finpro growth program) Trial law that supports MaaS and other renewal of the transport industry is being prepared
Open call for Mobility Operator Business, Timetable Open call for prestudy projects begins Open call for prestudy projects ends Decisions on funding for prestudy projects latest Prestudy projects turn into consortium project applications Open call for prestudies Open call for consortium projects PILOTS START Open call for consortium projects begins Open call for consortium projects ends Decisions on funding for consortium projects latest Decisions on funding are made as applications are submitted.
Last remarks MaaS needs to offer a sufficient level of service to compete with private car Comperehensive service supply (long-haul transportation, personal logistics etc.) Guarantee on the realization of trips MaaS services need to be easy to use Integrated payment systems Scalability MaaS services need to be individual and addictive
Thank you! Contact: Sonja Heikkilä, Tekes Tekes open calls for mobility operator business in spring 2015: /prestudies-liikkumisoperaattorihaku-2015/ /liikkumisoperaattorihaku-2015/
