May 2021 Dear Friends I want to begin my letter with a sense of thanks and gratitude to everyone at St Mary s and St Michael s for their support over the past year, it has been quite a journey! Life is a journey for every one of us, and frustratingly at times life never stands still as much as we would like it to! But having said that it also keeps life interesting. One thing is for sure we need teamwork for things to happen in this life and with teamwork we can adapt and deal with most situations. Never has a truer word been spoken after the year we have just experienced! Many of the team members within our churches are volunteers which demonstrates what a fantastic sense of community we have in Betchworth and Buckland and that is something to be extremely proud of! Relating this to the Bible, Jesus could not have carried out his ministry alone, he depended on those around him to work together and spread the good news, After this the Lord appointed seventy-two others and sent them two by two ahead of him to every town and place Luke 10 vs 1, emphasising the need to work together. We cannot get very far on our own, we are relational beings despite our differences at times, we rely on our different strengths and talents. John Pritchard once referred to the church being like a bouquet of flowers, the more a variety of flowers are added, the more beautiful the bouquet becomes. St Michael and St Mary s has a beautiful bouquet and I want to take this opportunity to say, THANK YOU, for all that people do and of course we always welcome more flowers to the bouquet, the quirkier the better. With lockdown easing, people s time and talent are very much appreciated as we venture into new territory for the church community. Together we can, as the army says, adapt and overcome any situation that is presented to us. 3 May 2021

This month we recollect Ascension and Pentecost where Jesus returns to the Father and the Holy Spirit is sent to strengthen and guide the disciples to spread the Good News of God being among us. This was news they were willing to die for, and did for, news that has survived over 2000 years. As Christians we now have that baton to pass on, to tell our story of God s presence in our lives. Cliff Caswell a member of our congregation has written an account of his journey to faith which is an extraordinary read of God is revealed in the most unexpected places. In this month of May I invite us to contemplate how God is present in our lives and who have we told our story to? God Bless Revd. 7 VOLUNTEER REQUIRED 'LIGHT TOUCH' WEDDING CO-ORDINATOR Most readers will be aware that Anna, our Reverend has two churches to run and is only employed part-time 3 days per week, including Sunday... and due to cost saving necessities, we no longer have a paid administrator role. We are therefore hoping to fill a new volunteer role for someone to assist Revd. Anna with Wedding enquiries and to ensure things are properly planned for each wedding couple, from the Church's perspective. The role would include sending couples our information pack, showing them the church, arranging bookings with the Rector, bellringers, choir, explaining the logistics (reading of the banns, access for flowers, meeting the Rector, guest parking, etc). It would initially be for St Mary's Buckland but maybe expanded to St Michael's Betchworth if the candidate is interested. We normally have only a handful of weddings each year, so the tasks are not too onerous and it is fun to work with couples ready to tie the knot. In the first instance, please call Revd Anna Moore for a chat about the role, on May 2021

Holy Land Pilgrimage: Introduction to the Bible Lands March 5th 13th 2022 To spread some positive news and offer some hope for the future, Revd. Helen Cook and I are planning a pilgrimage to the Holy Land -St Georges College, through our link Diocese in Jerusalem Many will be thinking we cannot get out of our own community at the moment, let alone to the Holy Land which is true! However, this does not stop us being hopeful that life will change by This is an opportunity to look forward to a light at the end of a difficult path. We are not asking people to commit at this stage, we are simply offering something to consider for next year. Helen and I stayed at the college in 2019 and were extremely impressed not only because of its location to the city, its employees were Palestinian, but the tours were educational and engaging as the biblical sites visited were explained and referenced beforehand. Unlike other pilgrimages, the college offers a base which allows people to process the day rather than being shipped around in various hotels (this is vital as there is so much to take in!) It offers an academic experience as well as spiritual one bringing the bible into 4D! The Introduction to Bible Lands programme aims to change the way you read the Bible by combining biblical and historical studies with pilgrimage to key sites from the Old and New Testaments. Aims of the Course: You should expect your faith to be transformed and renewed as you make your pilgrim journey through the Holy Land. We will learn together, pray together, and worship together as we go. During the course St Georges academic staff and chaplain will enable you to: Explore the Holy Land as Christian pilgrims Visit key biblical sites from the Old and New Testaments Understand better the historical contexts of Biblical stories To encounter the roots and traditions of the Christian faith Understand some of the contemporary issues in Israel and Palestine Content of the Course: While the details of every programme vary depending on local circumstances and date, we would typically visit the following places during the course: 8 May 2021

The place of Jesus birth in Bethlehem. The fields where angel visited the shepherds (Luke ). Jesus childhood home and the site of the Annunciation in Nazareth. The site of Christ s baptism. The Sea of Galilee, including Jesus own town (Matt. 9.1), Capernaum. Caesarea Philippi & Tthe source of the Jordan River. Bethphage, where Jesus entered Jerusalem in triumph (Mark ). The Garden of Gethsemane (Mark ). The Way of the Cross, the site of the crucifixion and Jesus tomb. The remains of the ancient city of Jericho, whose walls Joshua brought down. The remains of the ancient city of Dan, the northern most city of Israel. Mount Carmel, where Elijah confronted the prophets of Baal (1 Kings 18). Key sites around Jerusalem from the time of David and Solomon. a chance to float in the Dead Sea. The Cost: $2, Flights (This is approx British Airways based on exchange rate Jan 2021 and Flights March 2021) To Register your interest with no commitment at this stage please let Revd. Anna know by ing; rectorbetchworthandbuckland@gmail.com so that we can start to plan with the college. Please be reassured you are not committing yourself, later this year we will contact you again to see if you are still interested and at that point, we would ask for a deposit to secure a place. There is no pressure if you decide not to come. If you would like further information, please visit St Georges website: E22 Introduction to the Bible Lands: March 5 March 13, 2022 Saint George's College Jerusalem Hopefully, life will change for the better soon and this will be something to look forward to next year! In the meantime, stay safe and well. God Bless, Revd Anna Moore 9 May 2021

BELL-RINGING A LITTLE EXPLANATION As promised in the Parish update issued on the 13th April by Sheena Boyce, I explain the difference between tolling and chiming, and ringing muffled, half muffled and no muffles. All 6 Buckland bells are hung in an iron frame within the timber framed steeple; the attached photos of our demonstration model show a bell in its up and down position. The top of the bell is attached to a horizontal rail which in turn sits on the frame enabling the bell to be swung vertically through 360 degrees. In between ringing sessions, e.g. practices and Sunday ringing, all bells are left in a down position for safe keeping; during a ringing session the bells can be left in an up position for a short time. Up bell Down bell Tolling involves ringing one bell only from the up position through 360 degrees back to the up position. This requires some precision, and the bell notes can be spaced out to allow for the slow solemnity required for a funeral. Chiming is ringing the bell in the down position puling just enough for the side of the bell to hit its internal clapper; it is faster than tolling but with less control over the timing of the bell's striking. On the 10th April the day after the Duke of Edinburgh's death all churches were asked to either chime or toll a bell 99 times; at Buckland we chimed the bell 99 times because the bell was in the down position and could not be raised until checked out following a year of inactivity. That pre-arranged check took place the following Wednesday, and meant that we (Martin Boyce actually) tolled the Bell on the day of the funeral the 17th April. Those on and around Green at the time should have heard a bell being tolled. 10 May 2021

The usual ringing which you hear is from the up position, and gives us the ability to control the timing and speed of the bells. Muffling the bells is putting a leather cover on the clapper thereby deadening the sound. For Remembrance Sunday and funerals the bells are rung half muffled; a leather cover is put on one side of the clapper meaning a continuity of one round of muffled ringing followed closely by one round of normal ringing and so on. The only occasion the bells are fully muffled is when the sovereign dies, and we trust that time is someway off. David Sayce, Captain of the bells ORGAN FUND UPDATE Chris Slater's progress so far Last month's magazine set out Chris Slater's intention to play all the hymns in the hymn book we use at St Mary's. He has made very good progress and at the time of writing had already played the first 450 of the 846 in the hymn book. In addition to the enjoyment of actually playing them, this has been somewhat of a voyage of discovery even for Chris as a very experienced organist; he has discovered many hymns unknown to him, some non traditional and also from many parts of the world. It makes for a very rich hymnal and reflects the diverse aspects of Christian faith. Thank you to all who have sponsored him so far; if you haven't already done so please consider doing it and perhaps relate it to a particular hymn which is special to you. I take this opportunity to correct an error in the previous article: the correct Church account into which sponsorship money can made is sort code Account number with ORGAN FUND as the reference. Thank you, Chris! David Sayce, Churchwarden Don t let the behaviour of others destroy your inner peace Dalai Lama 11 May 2021

BUCKLAND PARISH COUNCIL UPDATE Annual Volunteer activity : Village Pond The Reigate Area Conservation Volunteers (RACV) have, for many years, supported Buckland s efforts to care for its village pond by leading an annual volunteer event. The success of these events very much depends upon village residents coming along to help and we are hoping, as lockdown eases that many of you will feel able to take part in this year s volunteer activity. This year the challenge will be the need for us to make up for the limited volunteer activity last year (due to lockdown restrictions) combined with the extended periods of hot weather we experienced in 2020 (which provided ideal conditions for the fast growth of unwanted vegetation). RACV are offering to host a series of late summer pond clearance events to help us care for our village pond the plan is to hold three events, including one midweek event, (dates as yet to be confirmed) Annual Parish Meeting - If you missed this year s meeting or were unable to join us please read the draft minutes, which will be published shortly after the 6 th May 2021 elections. An update will be issued via the village group to advise when the minutes become available to download from the village website. Parish Council Annual Meeting - The government introduced legislation in April 2020 to allow Council meetings to be held virtually. As this legislation is due to expire on 6 th May 2021, the Parish Council, when it met in March, agreed to hold its Annual Meeting as a virtual meeting on Tuesday 4 th May When Council meets arrangements for Council s next meeting will be considered. Future Mole Valley The Mole Valley District Council (MVDC) Planning team recently advised work on a new Local Plan for Mole Valley continues apace with a draft plan due to be put to MVDC on the first occasion the Council meets after the 6 th May 2021 elections. Village Website As lockdown eases and activities start up please help our webmaster keep the content on the village website up to date if you would like to provide content for a local business and/or local activity or group or think now would be a good time to refresh content you have already provided please webmaster@bucklandsurrey.net. 14 BUCKLAND LOW CARBON NETWORK Report on Green Energy meeting, 13 April 2021 Leo Kane, local resident and sustainaiblity consultant, gave a talk on Green Energy Suppliers, which led to an active discussion about the experiences of local attendees. Ken Caldwell chaired the meeting and followed up with listed recommendations of where to get further information: and-how-to-choose-one/ Five energy companies seem to crop up most commonly on these reviews as the ones that have the strongest green credentials: Ecotricity, Green Energy UK, Octopus, Bulb & Good Energy. All of these only supply renewable electricity, and buy some of their electricity in direct contracts with renewable generators and/or have their own renewable generation capacity. So, if you are interested in moving to a greener energy supplier, you might like to start with those next time you are reviewing your supplier and see who is offering the best deals and customer service. We noted that it is much harder to get renewable gas - even most of the above suppliers only have a small proportion of their gas coming from renewable sources. Some of them also buy carbon offsetting for the rest of their gas, but as there are not yet any international standards for this, carbon offsetting claims should be taken with some scepticism. At present, there is only one energy supplier currently offering 100% green gas, and that is Green Energy UK. Their current gas unit costs are significantly higher than others, so at present, you will need to be prepared to spend significantly more to get 100% green gas. However, the more people that do this, the more this market will develop, which should help to reduce the price difference. There is an open invitation to join our network meetings, currently on Zoom. Please ken.caldwell@caldwells.uk.net to be advised of the next Network meeting. Ken Caldwell/DF 14 May 2021

GARDENING NOTES MAY Sunny and warm at last for gardeners and their plants It s good to now be into the warmer months of spring. This year has seen poorer light levels and cooler temperatures than normal. Young plants have taken far longer to establish roots and general growth. Coupled with a surge in demand caused by the wave of new interest in gardening since the first lockdown, many of our plant suppliers have struggled to keep up with increased orders. Sadly, the warm and sunny spell in spring last year brought on plants too early which they were unable to sell at the time. As seasoned gardeners already know, growing can be a fickle business! The good news is that from May onwards plants will thrive. How useful greenhouses and coldframes are to protect against cold nights just remember to open windows and doors to provide adequate ventilation and prevent overheating during sunny days. Even now a late frost can spoil vegetables and bedding plants, but let s hope we will avoid this problem after all the cold nights this April. Wondering what to plant next? For many, the most important plants in the garden are herbs. Lavender will grow in the poorest of soils; all it needs is sunshine to bring out the best and prolific colour. Rosemary can grow into a tall bush, but most herbs will stay small and compact particularly if they are regularly picked and enjoyed. Bees will love many herbal flowers such as thyme, borage and chives. For small fruits which are very easy to grow and a good starter plant to nurture the gardening bug in children, strawberries will bring plenty of quality delicious treats. Who can resist the full flavour of home-grown produce? David Hogg, Buckland Nurseries The possession of knowledge does not kill the sense of wonder and mystery. There is always more mystery. 18 LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION 1 Trevor Adams, my assistant programmer, can always be found 2 hard at work at his desk. Trevor works independently, without 3 wasting company time talking to colleagues. Trevor never 4 thinks twice about assisting fellow employees, and he always 5 finishes given assignments on time. Often he takes extended 6 measures to complete his work, sometimes skipping coffee 7 breaks. Trevor is an individual who has absolutely no 8 vanity in spite of his high accomplishments and profound 9 knowledge in his field. I firmly believe that Trevor can be 10 classed as a high-calibre employee, the type that cannot be 11 dispensed with. Consequently, I truly recommend that Trevor be 12 promoted to executive management, and a proposal will be 13 executed as soon as possible. Addendum. The idiot was standing over my shoulder while I wrote this report. Kindly re-read only the odd number lines. Thanks to Richard Wheen for this submission 18 May 2021

11 Barton Hay Carbonell THE INSCRIPTIONS Translated from Latin: Glory to God, Barton Hay Carbonell, Died 23 April in the year of salvation 1844, age 16. Rest in peace. A170 Brass plaque in South Wall of Sanctuary (Buckland MI Report) Barton Hay Carbonell was born on 14 January 1828 at Walden in Hertfordshire. Barton was the youngest son of John Carbonell ( ) and his second wife, Charlotte Beckford Hay (b.1796). Barton s death certificate states that he died of consumption, now known as tuberculosis. Barton Hay s mother, Charlotte, died age 34 in 1830, when he was just aged two. Barton Hay s father John sired him at the age of 68 when his second wife was just 32. John died in 1837, aged 77, when his son was just 9 years of age. It appears that he was brought up by his much older sisters: in the 1841 Census, Barton was living with 5 of his sisters, the eldest being 30, plus 11 servants; in Buckland Court, presumably renting from the Beaumont family. All the family are recorded as living by independent means. This was a most unusual upbringing for a teenage boy: deceased parents and five sisters, the eldest of whom was 17 years older than himself. And yet, considerable wealth none of the family were working and the 6 young adults were supported by 11 servants It is very sad that this boy died so young, and that so much tragedy had hit the family despite their wealth. The wealth came from their family business as London wine merchants, serving the Royal Court, and herein lies an interesting story. The grandfather of Barton Hay Carbonell was a fascinating character. Born in 1700 in Rome, as Giovanni Stefano Carbonelli he trained as a composer and violinist and travelled to England 22 May 2021

John Carbonell ( ) - the father of Barton Hay Carbonell in the grounds of his house at Windsor. Painting by Edmund Bristow & Johann Zoffany, in National Trust Collection, Anglesey Abbey as a teenager. He made several performances at Drury Lane Theatre in London; he played for the famous composer, Handel, in London and at the Royal Court for George II. He personally composed classical Sonatas but there is no historical record of their performance. He changed his name by deed poll to John Stephen Carbonell, married and had children. In 1740, he retrained as a wine merchant (vintner) and used his royal connection as a musician to supply the Royal Court with wine. His business was passed to his son, John Junior (Barton Hay s father). His remarkable life is detailed by Talbot 1 an academic musician who had revitalized the music composed by Carbonelli, which has resulted in two relatively recent CDs 2, released in 2017 & (Search Carbonelli, Delphian Records.com). If you like Handel and Bach, you will like the Carbonelli CDs. John Junior Carbonell was a great friend of George III ( ) with whom he went hunting. There is an amusing story documented in a biog- 23 May 2021

raphy of George III published 200 years ago in : The following ludicrous incident occurred during one of the royal hunts, Mr Carbonell, the wine-merchant who served his Majesty, was a favorite with the King, and used to be admitted to the royal hunts. Returning from the chase one day, his Majesty entered affably into conversation with his winemerchant and rode tete-a-tete with him a considerable way. Lord Walsingham was in attendance, and watching an opportunity, took Mr Carbonell aside and whispered something to him. What s that - what has Walsingham been saying to you! enquired the good-humoured monarch. Carbonell replied Please you Sire, I find I have been guilty of unintentional disrespect; my Lord has just informed me that I ought to have taken off my hat whenever I addressed your Majesty; but your Majesty will please observe that whenever I hunt, my hat is fastened to my wig, and my wig is tied to my head and I am riding a very highspirited horse, so that if my hat comes off, my head goes off with it! The King laughed heartily at the whimsical apology, and was content to chat with his little fat wine-merchant, without endangering his falling from his horse. [The little fat wine merchant Barton Hay s father is in the picture on the previous page]. John Junior expanded the wine business to greater heights, commissioning the architect to design a new emporium at Regent Street, London, which was the headquarters of the wine merchants, Carbonell, Moody & Walker from Barton Hay s father, the wine merchant never lived in Buckland. It is likely that the surviving daughters took the decision to move out of London to a country house in Buckland. Eleven years following Barton Hay s death, our Rector at Buckland, the Reverend William Francis Hotham, married one of Barton Hay s sisters, Emma Carbonell in January 1855 in our church at Buckland and they went on to have three children, all christened here. William and Emma Hotham are commemorated on additional plaques in the church (A169a & b). 37 THE MAGAZINE 60 YEARS AGO May 1961 Marking the Centenary of Buckland School Editors comments in italics In May 1961 our Rector Revd. Barlow wrote about the Centenary s of our church and School: You will remember that the year 1960 marked the Centenary of the restoration of the Church [by architect, Henry Woodyer]. Next year another Centenary must be observed. On May , Bishop Samuel Wilberforce, Bishop of Oxford, and afterwards of Winchester, laid the foundation stone of Buckland School, and we must duly observe this. I see that May 19th next years falls on a Tuesday, for it is important that we should keep the proper day. I am hoping that we shall be able to have a whole holiday, and I shall be writing very soon finding someone to come and address us, for folks in high places require such long notice nowadays. Meanwhile I hope all parents and friends for the School will keep this date in mind and put it in their diaries. Bishop Samuel Wilberforce who opened Buckland School was a great public speaker, and spoke opposing Darwin s Theory of Evolution. He was the third son of William Wilberforce ( ), the MP and Christian who campaigned for the abolition of the slave trade for 20 years, until the passage of the Slave Trade Act of Samuel died in a riding accident and there is a memorial in his honour at the site of the accident in Abinger Roughs woodland near Dorking. School History -The anniversary would be celebrating the new Buckland school building opened in 1862 and serving as our village school until closure in The school, it s teachers and pupils are the subject of a great book, by Jim Docking & Jenny Euston (2006), which although out of print, is available with full text on the village website, at The School Building - now known as Old School House on the corner of the village green and Rectory Lane, is the home of Wendy & John Lane. The belltower remains on the roof, and the foundation stone laid by Bishop Samuel Wilberforce is safely preserved in the wall. 25 May 2021

I can find it myself. Coronavirus VACCINATION WARNING This happened recently and is an important lesson for our friends and family in the older age group. A friend had his second doze of vaccine at the vaccination centre. Shortly afterwards he began to have blurred vision and struggled to get home. He rang the vaccination centre and asked if he should go straight to the hospital for help. He was told NOT to go to the hospital, but instead to return at once to the vaccination centre and pick up his glasses 26 May 2021

SAINT OF THE MONTH ST UBALDO s DAY 15 May Ubaldo Baldassini was born in 1084 in Gubbio, Italy. Orphaned at an early age and raised by his uncle, the Bishop of Gubbio, Ubaldo was no stranger to the Church and spent his youth studying for the priesthood. After dedicating his life to Christ, Ubaldo was appointed Bishop of Gubbio in He served as Bishop for many years and proved to be a true father to his people. He was known for his kindness, gentleness and generous spirit of forgiveness. As Bishop, he performed a number of miracles - giving sight to a blind man and saving the town from a civil war. His most notable miracle was saving the town of Gubbio from the invasion of German Emperor Frederick Barbarossa. In 1155, Barbarossa began his invasion of Umbria. The German army sacked and pillaged many of Gubbio s neighboring hilltowns. As smoke from the German invasion of Spoleto rose over the mountains, the townspeople of Gubbio took to the city walls for safety. Aged and in poor health, Ubaldo slipped out of the city gates and began the long and treacherous hike up the mountainside for a long period of prayer. After several days, the townspeople of Gubbio began to fear the worst of their beloved bishop s fate. To everyone s surprise, Ubaldo eventually returned unharmed. The townspeople placed Ubaldo on an H-shaped platform a massive sedan chair - and raced him through the streets of Gubbio. This was a local pagan custom dating from the 2nd Century BC and since adopted by the Christian community. This reassured the town that Ubaldo was physically unharmed and Gubbio was safe from the German invasion. A celebration of thanks ensued, thus began the tradition of the annual la Festa dei Ceri the Festival of Candles which continues today in a style that only the Italians can do. If you have 10 minutes to spare, these YouTube videos have my recommendation: historic, funny, inspiring and totally nuts! Google or YouTube search: Slow Tour of Italy on the Candles of Gubbio : First Episode (history & bellringing like you ve never seen it) Second Episode (the race action). I promise you that you will then remember St Ubaldo! DF 27 May 2021

ST JAMES THE LEAST OF ALL On the perils of holding a Rose Queen celebration The Rectory St James the Least of All My dear Nephew Darren On reflection, inviting your parishioners to join in our annual Rose Queen celebrations may not have been entirely wise. It was cheering to see that your people arrived on carnival floats, although it was less happy that some of them should have chosen to dress up as coronavirus bugs, full of those nasty spike proteins that startled some of the timid residents in our community. Once the procession started, your drivers did not seem to have grasped the fact that the vehicles were expected to tour the village slowly, for the benefit of spectators, instead of treating it as a competitive race. I noticed that numbers on your floats gradually diminished as they were flung off while careering round corners. Those who had a walk of several miles back home while dressed as pirates and ballerinas had my sympathy. Our tea ladies, however, were less sympathetic when one of your hay bales was spun off on a tight corner and went through our Women s Guild like a row of skittles. The local police normally use the afternoon to do a little gentle point duty while drinking gallons of sweet tea; this year, the number of tickets issued for speeding, and not social distancing, should boost our constabulary s figures for the next 12 months. I must concede that the group who decided to make a papier mache swan for one of your floats showed great imagination. It was such a pity that they did not know a 15-foot-high swan would be driven under a 12-foot bridge. The drama of its emergence, headless, was only exceeded by the following float which appeared to have a group of Brownies being savaged by a demented, bodiless, vulture. I am sure that some of your people s offers to help this year s Princesses campaign for election for Rose Queen next year were well-meant. However, I don t think our parish really wants a full-blown social media campaign for next year s Rose Queen, and so we will have to decline your offer. 28 May 2021

The crowning of the Rose Queen is always a high point to the afternoon, but could I point out that the gold crown is only metal foil, and the diamond sceptre is only a piece of glass? So, whoever it was in your crowd who walked off with them, please may we have them back before next year? Your loving uncle, Eustace EATING IN 1950 s ENGLAND Pasta had not been invented. Curry was a surname. A takeaway was a mathematical problem. A pizza was something to do with a leaning tower. Bananas and oranges only appeared at Christmas time. All crisps were plain; the only choice we had was whether to put the salt on or not. Rice was a milk pudding, and never, ever part of our dinner. A Big Mac was what we wore when it was raining. Brown bread was something only poor people ate. Oil was for lubricating, fat was for cooking Tea was made in a teapot using tea leaves and never green. Coffee was Camp, and came in a bottle. Cubed sugar was regarded as posh. Only Heinz made beans. Fish didn't have fingers in those days. Eating raw fish was called poverty, not sushi. None of us had ever heard of yoghurt. Healthy food consisted of anything edible. People who didn't peel potatoes were regarded as lazy. Indian restaurants were only found in India. Cooking outside was called camping. Seaweed was not a recognized food. "Kebab" was not even a word never mind a food. Sugar enjoyed a good press in those days, and was regarded as being white gold. Prunes were medicinal. Surprisingly, muesli was readily available, it was called cattle feed. Pineapples came in chunks in a tin; we had only ever seen a picture of a real one. The one thing that we never ever had on our table in the fifties.. was elbows! Thanks to Everett Leeds for this submission 29 May 2021

Scorning the traditional idealised interpretation of religious subjects, he took his models from the streets, painting them realistically and heightening the emotional intensity by his dramatic contrasts of light and shade. Such a revolutionary style was condemned by many as was his equally dramatic personal life and uncontrollable temper which involved him in endless brawls and even murder. This lecture will study the life and works of this enigmatic man and of his influence on later artists. 45 DORKING MUSEUM Planned Re-opening on 20 May 2021 After extensive covid-19 assessment and implementation of special measures, the Museum plans to reopen on May 20 th, subject to review of ongoing restrictions. Great care has been taken to ensure that it can open safely whilst continuing to offer an appropriate visitor experience. Normal covid procedures should be observed, visitor numbers and access to some displays will be restricted. The current special exhibition is commemorating the 50 th anniversary of the death of E M Forster. Best remembered for his novels, including Howard s End, A Room with a View and A Passage to India, his work was highly regarded during his lifetime, and remains popular today: all six of his novels have been adapted for film or television. Forster regularly visited his aunt in Abinger Hammer from a young age, inherited her home on her death and lived there with his mother from 1924 to Observation of the locals provided material for his novels and Holmbury St Mary the setting for A Room with a View. Forster played an active part in village life, and local friends influenced his political and environmental activism. He wrote two local pageants with the composer Ralph Vaughan Williams, and in 1938 the two set up the Dorking and District Refugee Committee in response to the suffering experienced by those fleeing the Nazi regime in Germany. Visit for a short film and book to accompany the exhibition. Walking in Dorking: The Museum s guided walks will also recommence in May, starting with The Deepdene Trail, including unique access to the Hope Mausoleum, Saturday 22 nd May, 2pm. North now leads this remaining Diamond and East has a choice: a) if he ruffs with South discards his Club and wind the last 3 tricks with A 7and 5. b) if instead East discards his remaining Club, South ruffs low and leads a Club, which East must ruff. c) if East ruffs the Diamond low, South overruffs as cheaply as possible and leads a Club which East wins. In cases (b) & (c) East has to lead a Spade and thereby finesse himself, giving South the last two tricks.
