1 Modern Europe: EUH 2030 Section 51 (M/W 12:30-1:45) Florida International University (Spring 2003) Office: AC1 372 Phone: Professor Rebecca Friedman Office Hours: Monday and Wednesday or by appointment A2 115 Teaching Assistant: Meiyolet Mendez Office Hours (in AC1 303A): Mondays and Wednesday 2:30-3:30 or by appointment This class will take the history of the Enlightenment as its starting point and will end with World Word II and the Holocaust, which many argue marked the death of Enlightenment ideals. The general themes for the course include the rise and fall of ideologies, patterns of imperial expansion, the emergence of new social categories, as well as changing family structures. By working with a variety of primary source documents including novels, memoirs, poetry, letters, films, political platforms and philosophical tracts we will be able to explore the relationship between these large-scale historical processes and individual experiences. This course will also place a lot of emphasis on sharpening skills of historical analysis and analytical thinking. Books and Other Required Materials* Lynn Hunt, et. Al. Lualdi, Sources of The Making of the West: People and Cultures volume II: Since 1340) Chinua Achebe, Things Fall Apart Charles Dickens, A Christmas Carol Primo Levi, Survival In Auschwitz Karl Marx and Frederick Engels, The Communist Manifesto Brian Tierney and Joan W Scott, Western Societies: A Documentary History *There are also a few required readings available on the library s on-line reserves **The instructor reserves the right to require additional readings over the course of the term Grading and Expectations Your semester grade will be based on a number of writing assignments, exams, quizzes and in-class participation. You are expected to do the reading BEFORE class and come to class ready to participate in discussions, debates, whether in small groups or with the class as a whole. Since this class meets the university-wide writing requirement ( the Gordon Rule ), you will be asked to write (at least) 24 pages over the course of the semester. This course will focus not only on learning the narrative of modern European history, but also refining your analytic and writing skills. Along these lines, you should be prepared to participate in in-class writing exercises as well as in-depth discussions of the materials. Failure to do so will result in a lower grade for the term. In addition to the essays and final exam, you will be expected to take a number of quizzes (some surprise, some announced) in class to be sure you are keeping up with the assigned readings. Class Policies Attendance You will be expected to attend all classes and to do the reading BEFORE the class period for which it is assigned (this will help facilitate discussion). Please see the instructor if you need to miss class. Also, it is expected that all phones, pagers and so forth will be turned off during class. I will not tolerate lateness it is disruptive both to the instructor and to other students. 1

2 Late Papers I will not accept late papers without a legitimate excuse; and you MUST let me know beforehand that you will not be able to meet the deadline. In these cases, you will be marked down (slightly) for your lateness. If you do not hand the paper in on time, you will get a 1/3 reduction in grade (from A to A- for instance) and it will be due at the next class. An additional 1/3 will subtracted if it is not handed in the next class. I will not accept ANY papers one-week past the deadline. Plagiarism Passing someone else s work in as your own or borrowing ideas without attributing their source constitutes plagiarism. If you have any questions, please ask the instructor. The University has set its own standards and policies; please see: Also, look in your student handbook on this subject; the university does not tolerate cheating. If you have any questions in this regard ask me BEFORE you hand in your work. Needles to say, plagiarism of any kind will NOT be tolerated in this class. Requirements and Grading* Essays (4) 70% (total) The four essays that you will be required to write in this course will vary in form and content (as well as in length, the first two being shorter than the last two) and will make up much of your grade. I urge you to take these seriously, always making an argument in a clear and organized fashion. The themes for these essays will be as follows: Enlightenment/French Revolution; the Industrial Revolution; Colonialism and Empire; and The Great War (WWI) OR the WWII/ Holocaust. The specific assignments will be handed out over the course of the term in a timely fashion. There will be time scheduled for conferences with the professor and teaching assistant after the first and third papers; this will give us the opportunity to help you with your writing and analytic skills and give you an opportunity to ask us questions.
