Information from Mahara: < Unfortunately,.avi,.mkv,.m4v,.wma,.wmv and.mov files aren t very compatible with Mahara eportfolio. You CAN convert them though. You can use the free MPEG Streamclip video converter. You download the relevant zip file and use it from the unzipped folder. It doesn't have to be installed; it just runs in the folder you extract it to. MPEG Streamclip video converter is available for both Windows and Mac systems. MPEG Streamclip video converter won t convert.wmv files. 2 Download and install QuickTime Download 1. Go to < 2. Deselect the checkbox next to Keep me up to date with Apple news, software updates, and the latest information on products and services. 3 4. You will receive a dialogue window asking if you want to Save or Cancel the download. Click on the Save button: a. In Firefox, the Opening QuickTimeInstaller.exe dialogue window will pop up, click on the Save button. b. In Chrome, the Save As dialogue window will pop up, click on the Save button. c. In Internet Explorer, a dialogue will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Click on the Save button: Install 1. Navigate to the folder you downloaded the.exe file to: Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 3

8 Download, install and use MPEG Streamclip on Windows XP/Vista/7 Download 1. Go to < 2. Click on the MPEG Streamclip for windows menu link on the left: 3. Click on the Download MPEG Streamclip 1.2 for Windows link (not the beta version): You may have to wait for a couple of minutes, depending on your internet connection. a. In Firefox, a dialogue window will pop up, click on the OK button. b. In Chrome, a dialogue window will pop up, click on the Save button. c. In Internet Explorer, a dialogue will pop up at the bottom of the screen. Click on the Save button. 4. In Windows Vista and Windows 7 it will most likely download to your Downloads folder. 9 Install 11. Navigate to the folder you downloaded the.zip file to: 12. Use your.zip file management program (WinZip, PeaZip or 7Zip) to extract the file into where you downloaded it (try to extract it into a new folder). A good open source.zip file management program is PeaZip: < 13. Right-click on the.zip > your program > extract here in new folder: Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 9

12 Use 1. With the program open, click on File > Open Files and navigate to your file: 2. Click on the Open button: Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 12

13 3. Your video will open in MPEG Streamclip: 4. To start converting your file format, click on File > Export to MPEG-4 Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 13

14 5. Leave the settings are as you see them here, and ensure Interlaced Scaling is deselected, otherwise your video will not play in Mahara. Click on the Make MP4 button: Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 14

15 6. A Create New MP4 file dialogue window will appear. Click on the Save button: 7. You will see two smaller dialogue windows appear, which show the video conversion process is occurring: Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 15

16 Download, install and use MPEG Streamclip on Mac QuickTime is needed to make this work and is built into Mac OS X. Use Software Update to keep QuickTime up to date on your Mac. Download 1. To install the program, drag the MPEG Streamclip.app icon into your Applications folder. 2. From the Applications folder, drag the MPEG Streamclip.app icon onto your Dock. 3. Launch finder and eject the MPEG Streamclip.app icon application listed in the main menu under Devices (see below) Learning Systems and Support (LTQ) 18

19 Use 1. To open the application, single left click on the MPEG Streamclip.app icon. 2. When you launch this application for the first time, the following message will appear: 3. 23 Video Codecs used by the Mahara Video Player, Flowplayer Information from: < Codec information MP4, WEBM and OGG are the containers for the following video and audio codecs: Container video codec audio codec MP4 H.264 aka MPEG-4 AVC or MPEG-4 Part 10 AAC preferred format WEBM VP8 Vorbis OGG Theora Vorbis MPEG-4 Visual or MPEG-4 Part 2 video codec is not covered, because it is not suitable as Flash fallback and will also not play in Internet Explorer in HTML5 mode. To avoid bad surprises, encode to the more modern MPEG-4 AVC. When sharing any aspect of your eportfolio, please limit sharing your pages to Specific Friends, Specific Groups, Specific People, or to a Secret URL. Do not allow Public Access to any page, or allow access to Logged-In Users unless you intend for those pages to be widely available and able to be reproduced. Academic staff sometimes choose this option for demonstration purposes, but students should consider their privacy before sharing widely with the Public or Logged in Users.
