1 KING S COLLEGE CHAPEL SERVICES AND MUSIC EASTER AND LONG VACATION TERMS 2016
2 NOTICES SUND AY PREAC HERS TH IS TERM We offer a variety of sermons at our Sunday morning services this term. We welcome the College Visitor the Bishop of Lincoln, to preach at the Confirmation Eucharist and the Bishop of Manchester, himself a Kingsman, will give The Sermon Before the University with the title Theology, Place and Belonging: from the Book of Leviticus to the Streets of Salford. The series Women of Spirit continues and has something of a royal theme with sermons about the Old Testament figure Queen Esther by Christina Rees CBE, together with a sermon about our reigning Monarch, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth the Second by the Dean of Birmingham, and one on Queen Elizabeth the First by the Chaplain. Our ordinand, Calum Zuckert, will speak about Josephine Butler, a most remarkable social reformer, and the Dean will talk about Julian of Norwich, mystic and theologian. The Dean of Peterhouse will be offering a special sermon to commemorate the 500th anniversary of the publication by Erasmus of the New Testament in Greek, together with a Latin translation and commentary. This was an important text for Luther, and the sermon will help set the scene for various other sermons and events through which we will be commemorating the 500th anniversary of the Reformation in future terms. The full sequence of preachers this term is as follows: 24 April Christina Rees CBE Dean of Little Gidding Esther (Women of Spirit) 1 May The Revd Dr Stephen Cherry Dean Julian of Norwich (Women of Spirit) 8 May The Right Reverend David Walker Bishop of Manchester Theology, place and belonging: From the Book of Leviticus to the streets of Salford 15 May The Right Revd Christopher Lowson Bishop of Lincoln and College Visitor [ 2 ]

Last term s Sunday morning collections raised 632 for the local charity STARS, 680 for the international Sant Egidio Community and our collection on Good Friday for Christian Aid raised This term they are Just Love, a Cambridge-based Christian charity which involves students in action for social justice; and Parkinson s UK, the national charity. At all other services and at Saturday evening recitals, you are invited to support the work of the Chapel and Choir by giving to the retiring collection. Please use the envelope provided, including your details if you are a UK taxpayer, so that we can benefit from Gift Aid: this way the government adds 25% to your donation. If you would prefer to make a donation at a later date, please either send a cheque to the Dean, the Revd Dr Stephen Cherry, King s College, Cambridge, CB2 1ST; or [email protected] for information on ways to make significant or ongoing contributions to our work. SEATI NG I N CHAPEL The top stalls in the choir area are reserved for members of King s College and their guests. Members of the University are invited to make [ 3 ]
4 themselves known to the Chapel staff and may be invited to sit in the sub-stalls. RESTORATI ON OF THE CHAPEL ORGAN The Chapel organ is undergoing its most significant restoration since the 1960s. Today s instrument remains fundamentally as it was designed to be at the time of its rebuilding in the mid-1930s, but after many years of frequent use it was becoming unreliable; major work is now being undertaken to ensure that it continues to function optimally for the next generation. The restoration is being carried out during the first nine months of this year. The pipes were removed for cleaning and repair in January and February, and they return during the course of the Easter Term. While the organ case has been empty, surveying, cleaning and remedial structural work has been taking place. The organ is expected to be ready for use again in September. For more information about the organ and the restoration, please visit our website at [ 4 ]

34 DAILY SAID SERV IC ES In addition to our choral services, more intimate acts of worship are offered each weekday in one of the side chapels. Normally, the Eucharist is celebrated at p.m. If there is a Sung Eucharist in the evening, the p.m. service that day will be the Office of Readings, at which we hear and reflect on passages both from the Bible and from the great spiritual writers. There will be signage in Chapel each day specifying where these services are being held. RECORDI NG Please note that the use of cameras, recording equipment, video cameras and mobile phones is not permitted in Chapel. Some services and recitals are recorded each week for webcasts. You can listen to these throughout the year on the King s College website. SERVICE LI S T Copies of this booklet are available for sale at the King s Visitor Centre, please leave this one for others to use.
