D01E HEC, Code 0246, 3 Hours, 3 Credits 1 Dr. Caterina Pierre Art Course Description Art 98: History of Modern Sculpture (3 crs., 3 hrs): A study of the major developments in the history and theory of sculpture in Europe and the United States, focusing on the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, and continuing through to sculpture of the present day. Student Learning Outcomes/Goals of the Art 98 course: By the end of the Art 98 course, students should be able to: 1). Analyze and respond to figurative and abstract works of art from various cultures. 2). Recognize the differences and progression between the various period styles (or isms ) in modern art. 3). Identify the various processes of making and displaying art. 4). Utilize specific vocabulary and art terminology necessary for discussion and study of art. 5). Describe specific historical details of selected works of art from Western and non-western cultures, link relationships between artistic works and historical events, and recognize the influence of non-western art onto avant-garde artists from the Western tradition. 6). Write about a work of art using the knowledge acquired from class lectures, the museum visit, and the assigned readings. 7). Discuss a work of art using the knowledge acquired from the class lectures and the assigned readings, especially with regard to how a work of art speaks to the issues of its own times. You will need regular access to the internet to complete the assignments for this course! Required textbook for purchase: Causey, Andrew. Sculptures Since Oxford University Press, ISBN: Used and new copies are available at the college bookstore, Kings Books and online; please buy it asap. There is a copy of the book on reserve in the library You will also be responsible for reading all additional readings that I have placed on reserve in the library, ereserve, and on the course website. Requirements for the Course: In-Class and At-Home Writing Assignments on Artworks and Readings, and Vocabulary Sheets, worth 20% of final grade Midterm Examination, worth 20% of the final grade Will be on 4/7, no make-ups, no exceptions. Field Assignment (Term Paper), worth 20% of final grade This is a paper project in three parts, first drafts of each part due on 3/17, 4/14, and 5/5; final draft of completed paper, all parts combined, will be due at the final exam (date TBA). No ed papers; no exceptions! Late work will be downgraded one letter grade (10 points) for each day that it is late; no work will be accepted if it is more than one week late. Final examination, worth 20% of final grade Final examination date to be announced; Any make-ups will be downgraded one full letter and will consist of essay questions. Make-ups are given in the Fall semester and are scheduled by the Testing Office. Class participation, worth 20% of final grade Participation requires being involved in writing assignments and class discussions. You must be in attendance to participate. Therefore: 3 absences/6 late arrivals = lowers grade one letter; more than this will be considered a withdrawal from the class. Honors Enrichment Component: If you want to earn Honors credit for this course, and you currently have at GPA of 3.2 or higher, see me for the HEC assignment directions. I ll also pass them out to students who qualify for this program. Class Schedule and Reading Assignments: Week # 1: March 1 and 3 Lecture: Introduction to Sculpture I: The Ancients and the Invention of Sculpture

Week # 2: March 8 and 10 Lecture: Introduction to Sculpture II: The Renaissance and Baroque Periods (Donatello, Michelanglo and Bernini) Assignment: Read Butler, Western Sculpture, Definitions of Man (you will find this on ereserve in the Kibbee library), and Sculpture: From the Renaissance to the Present Day, Volume II, pages , , , (on reserve and ereserve). Choose a sculpture for your paper! Week # 3: March 15 and 17 Lecture: Sculpture during the Enlightenment in England and France (Roubiliac, Flaxman, Pigalle, Falconet, Pajou and Houdon) Assignment: read Janson, pgs (you will find this on reserve and on ereserve in the library) and Sculpture: From the Renaissance to the Present Day, Volume II, pages (on reserve and ereserve). Paper Part I draft due on 3/17! (No late papers will be accepted.) Week # 4: March 22 and 24 Lecture: Neo-Classicism: The International Influence of Antonio Canova (Canova, Thorvaldsen, Schadow) Assignment: read Janson, pgs (you will find this on reserve and on ereserve in the library). Week # 5: March 29 and 31 Lecture: Nineteenth-Century Sculpture in the United States (Greenough, Powers, Hosmer, Lewis, Barnard, French, Saint-Gaudens, MacMonnies) Assignment: read Janson, pgs ; (you will find this on reserve and on ereserve in the library); read selected pages from Ambrosini and Reynolds, Hiram Powers, Genius in Marble (you will find this on ereserve in the library). Week # 6: April 5 and 7 Lecture on 4/5: The Sculpture of Romanticism in France (Pradier, Rude, Barye, Préault, Clésinger, Orléans, Fauveau) Assignment: read Janson, pgs ; and Baudelaire, Salon of 1846: Why is Sculpture So Boring? Assignment: Read Causey, Chapter 1, pages 15-25; selected pages from Constantin Brancusi: The Essence of Things (you will find this on ereserve), and transcripts from the court case, United States vs. Brancusi (1927) (you will find this on ereserve). Week # 11: May 10 and 12 Lecture: Early Twentieth-Century Sculpture in the United States and Britain (Calder, Noguchi, Smith, Moore, Hepworth, Nevelson)

Week # 13: May 24 and 26 Lecture: Conclusions: Sculpture Today (Barney, Antoni, Whiteread, Gonzales-Torres, Flack, Serra, Koons, Hirst) Assignment: read Causey, Chapter 8, pages ; Sculpture: From the Renaissance to the Present Day, Volume II, pages (on reserve). Week # 14: May 31 (No classes May 30 for Memorial Day and Prof. Pierre will be absent on May 31) Start studying for the final exam and finish your final papers. Week # 15: Finals (June 2-7, 10) Final Examination, date, time and room to be announced The Final will cover the material from the entire semester, w/ emphasis on lectures from weeks 6-14 The final draft of your paper is due at the Final Exam Some things to keep in mind: -You must attend class, read the assignments, do all writing assignments and study for exams to pass this course! You will be tested on the images that are discussed and reproduced in the textbook in addition to other works that I show in class. -If I catch you sleeping in class, I will mark you absent for the day. (Get yourself a Red Bull or something!) -Cell Phones must remain off or set to vibrate during class. Do not play with your cell phone or send text messages during class lectures and phones must not be visible during class lectures or exams. -No eating, please. Chatting in class is not permitted. Engagement in the class discussion, however, is encouraged. -Lateness counts! Absences count! Please show up on time for every class; slides for the writing assignments will not be repeated. -Please utilize a regular dictionary and/or for finding vocabulary definitions.

6 6 -Please make use of the website for this course and my if you have any questions is the best and most efficient way to reach me if you have problems or questions. Some information about grades and class performance: Please be aware that just attending class and not doing any work does not warrant a passing grade. Being here is REQUIRED. I do not give extra credit assignments. If you just study for and do well on all of the required work in this course, you will earn a passing grade. I do not give you your grades: you give yourself your grades. All I do is record how you do in the five required assignment areas in this course: the midterm examination; the term paper and its components; the final examination; homework and all assignments to be turned in; and in-class work that is immediately collected. It is up to you to give yourself the grade that you want in this class. NEVER ask me for a specific grade. You will get a grade based on the average of your scores on the exams, papers, and assignments. If you need an A in this class, then make sure you earn it! The final grade is based on your scores on these assignments and nothing else! I generally do not give make-up exams. However, if you expect that you will have a problem attending the midterm or the final as they are scheduled on the syllabus, you must let me know as soon as possible. I will require that you bring in some proof as to why you cannot take the exam on the actual exam day (letter from work, doctor s note, etc.). If you have no proof of reason for missing the exam, you will not be granted a make-up. Please also note: any approved make-ups are usually given BEFORE the rest of the class takes the test, not after. I generally do not except late work. All assignments must be handed in exactly when they are due. It is not fair to give some students extra time for assignments while others hand in work on time. If work is turned in late, I take off points for every day it is late. Once an assignment is more than one week late, I will not accept it. Please remember that I do not accept ed work. All work must be turned in as a printed hardcopy in class on the day that it is due. I do not accept handwritten work for major assignments (handwritten homework is okay). I reserve the right to refuse any work if I suspect it is not the student s original work. Anything submitted in this class that is copied from the internet or seemingly copied from another student or is in any way plagiarized from another source will be returned with a zero grade. I expect that when you are here in class, you remain in the class for the duration of our meeting. While it is okay to leave the room in an emergency, please do not make it a habit. If I notice that you have left for a long period or left early without an excuse, I will mark you absent for the day. Federal FERPA laws prevent me to speaking to anyone about your grade or performance in my class, and that includes your parents. I do not speak to the parents of students about grades.
