3 Description This release includes updated tape drive firmware for Ultrium 1760 half-height parallel SCSI and SAS HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloaders, and MSL2024, MSL4048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries. The tape drive firmware can be updated through any of the following methods: Remote management interface (RMI). Operator control panel (OCP). HP Library and Tape Tools (L&TT). Tape drive firmware versions W51W parallel SCSI U51W SAS Update recommendation Recommended Supersedes All earlier versions of tape drive firmware. Product models All HP StorageWorks 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloaders and MSL2024, MSL4048, and MSL8096 Tape Libraries with one or more Ultrium 1760 tape drives. Languages Fixes English (American) English (International) New functionality This code introduces a power on event log. The event log will now extract and interpret the reason for the power on event (i.e. firmware upgrade, assert reset, power on etc.) Encryption When external encryption control is in place and the encryption parameter request policy is set to "request data encryption parameters when not set", the drive must request a key when a Write command is received after a read operation. In previous code versions, this was not the case, but it is now corrected. Every time a dataset is read, if the dataset is encrypted and the First Encrypted Block indicates there are no encrypted records on tape, then First Encrypted Block will be changed to reflect the reality. The SSC-3 standard states that if a volume is mounted in the drive, then it is not possible to modify the external encryption control settings. 4 especially during tape recovery. Given that the library is able to disable/enable the primary ports, then the restriction on configuring the external encryption control while volume is mounted has been changed to the following: If no primary ports are enabled, then accept the command to change settings. Furthermore, if there is no tape mounted in the drive and the ports are enabled, then changing encryption control settings ought to be allowed too. Drive hangs Previously, under certain timing conditions, it was possible that a read operation could hang, due to the firmware explicitly consuming an important signal. This issue is now resolved. Write/read/spacing issues Previously, if the removal of the medium was prevented, pressing the eject button or an issuing an unload command would not eject the tape, however the Logical Position would be wrongly reset which could cause a later read failure. This issue is now resolved. Added improvements so that the performance log is more up-to-date and accurate In this code version, when spacing forwards on a tape which has more than 100 filemarks that are unevenly spread over a half wrap, the drive will not try to work out where to start the search from, but will now start searching from the current position. Previously, if the drive received a locate command while the drive was still performing a read ahead operation, the locate command could return a good status without actually performing the locate and a time-out could potentially occur. This issue is now resolved. Interface-related issues Fixed an issue with Transport Layer Retry (TLR) handling in SAS drives that has been seen on DAT drives as a precautionary measure. SAS drives specifically connected to HP s new Proliant RAID smart array controllers (P212, P410, P411, P712) were subjected to a large Transport Layer Retry (TLR) occurrence and as a result performance was adversely affected. The performance is drastically improved by reducing the frame credit to 1. Automation issues Previously, customers using BackUp Exec software, could possibly experience 0x980a = AD_NO_TASK_OBJECT errors. This issue is now resolved. Previously, if a response timeout occurs during an Abort Task Management Function the data connection to the library could hang. This has been fixed. Universal cleaning cartridge Previously, in the very unlikely scenario that a Universal Cleaning Cartridge (UCC) had a stuck leader pin, the drive would fail to eject it and would have to be power cycled. This issue is now resolved. Previously, if a UCC was not initialized correctly it could be left with a thread count of 1. That meant it would never be re-initialized and it would always attempt to clean in the same area of tape and never increment the thread count. In simple terms, the end user could end up using this UCC for an infinite number of cleans. This issue is now resolved. 4

5 Installation instructions To upgrade firmware from the RMI: 1. Download current firmware using HP Library & Tape Tools or from the HP support website: / 2. Log into the RMI as the administrator user. 3. In the Support: Firmware page, select the tape drive, browse to the location of the tape drive firmware file, and click Update. 4. Repeat step 3 for additional Ultrium 1760 SAS tape drives in the Library. To upgrade firmware from the 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader or MSL2024 OCP using a USB flash drive: 1. Download current firmware using HP Library & Tape Tools or from the HP support website: / Copy the firmware onto the USB flash drive. 2. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on the back of the Library. 3. From the Home screen, press Next until the screen displays Support. Press Enter to select. 4. Press Next until the screen displays Drive FW upgrade. Press Enter to select. 5. Enter the administrator password if prompted. 6. Press Next until the screen displays the filename of the tape drive firmware file on the USB drive. Press Enter to select the firmware file. 7. If the upgrade failed, press Enter to display the error code and message describing the cause of the failure. 8. Repeat step 7 if the Library has a second 1760 SAS tape drive. 9. When the upgrade is complete, remove the USB flash drive from the USB port. To upgrade firmware from the MSL4048 or MSL8096 OCP using a USB flash drive: 1. Download current firmware using HP Library & Tape Tools or from the HP support website: / Copy the firmware onto the USB flash drive. 2. Insert the USB flash drive into the USB port on the back of the Library. 3. From the Support menu, select FW Upgrade > By USB. 4. Select the tape drive as the target for the upgrade, and select the filename of the firmware. Click Upgrade. 5. Repeat step 4 for additional Ultrium 1760 SAS tape drives in the Library. 6. When the upgrade is complete, remove the USB flash drive from the USB port. Determining current version To find the version of firmware installed on the Library, see the RMI Support: Firmware screen, the 1/8 G2 Tape Autoloader or MSL 2024 OCP Status/Information > Drive Information option, or the MSL4048 and MSL8096 OCP Info > Identity > Drives option.
