2 Meeting the California Standards Houghton Mifflin Reading: A Legacy of Literacy is built on a solid foundation of research in best teaching practices. Explicit, systematic instruction and a variety of state-specific resources ensure success for all California students. This new standards-based program Delivers explicit, systematic instruction to align with the California English Language Arts Standards Ensures beginning reading success, with thorough development of oral language, phonemic awareness, letter recognition, phonics and blending skills, and highfrequency vocabulary recognition Develops early reading fluency with hundreds of selections of engaging decodable text in grades K-2 Fosters independent and confident readers with a gradual transition from decodable text to trade literature Provides consistent development of comprehension strategies and skills, starting in kindergarten and increasing in emphasis as students move into the intermediate grades Provides built-in, daily support for students to help them meet the California standards Features a comprehensive system of diagnostic, prescriptive, and summative assessment Provides extensive support to reinforce and extend instruction in response to California s call for Universal Access to the curriculum Includes a comprehensive collection of literature resources to meet the independent reading needs of all students.
