2 1. Executive Summary 2. WHS Strategy An Overview.. 3. Baiada B Safe System. 4. Summary of the Baiada Workplace Health and Safety Strategy Executive Summary Baiada Poultry Pty Limited is a privately owned Australian company which provides premium quality poultry products throughout Australia. Our business operations include Broiler & Breeder Farms, Hatcheries, Processing Plants, Feed milling and Protein Recovery. Our products include sales of live poultry including breeding stock; poultry feed, fertile eggs, day old chickens, primary processed chicken (raw) and further processed chicken products and pet food. At Baiada Poultry our primary objective is to provide our customers with high quality products and excellent service. On the 27th July 2009, an incredible milestone occurred for Baiada Poultry, as it represented the bringing together of the Bartter and Steggles businesses into the Baiada Group. This acquisition comprises the purchase of the Bartter operations throughout Australia, with the exception of Victoria. Like Baiada, the Bartter business is a fully integrated poultry operation encompassing livestock farming, feed milling and primary and further processing of chickens and turkeys. The Bartter group also incorporates the original Steggles business, which the Bartter family acquired in The Steggles brand continues to enjoy strong consumer recognition in the fresh chicken market segment, a remarkable fact given that its beginnings date back to One of many key features with both businesses was the fundamental approach to an injury free workplace. Incorporating and combining both the Baiada, and Bartter Safety Systems together into a robust Workplace Health and Safety Management System, was identified as a challenge. In 2012 after 3 years of establishment as a combined business, the Senior Management of Baiada requested that an Audit of the present Baiada B Safe System be performed to measure the businesses Health and Safety system, and site compliance with legislation and Best Practices with the manufacturing industry. A complete AS/NZ 4801 Compliance Audit was conducted by Australian Risk Services, throughout the business incorporating: Baiada B Safe OHS Management system And Individual Site compliance From the results of the AS/NZ 4801 Audit and historical trends in our current OHS Key Performance Indicators (KPI) along with comparative benchmarking against best practice
3 in the manufacturing industry, has confirmed that we have not been totally successful in establishing a strong health and Safety management system, or the strong culture of WHS awareness required to produce a transformational change, needed to establish Baiada as an industry leader in WHS performance. The compliance score and some recommendations of the 4801 Audit, have been to produce a 5 year WHS Strategy and plan for the business, so as to continually improve and become more proactive with workplace health and Safety throughout the Baiada business The 2012 Audits conducted by Australian Risk Services using the National Standard 4801 Audit tool, provided useful insight into further development and direction required to strengthen an already fundamentally strong System, into an even more derivable, strong and robust WHS System. Combining External tools, research, and Baiada senior management direction, this Strategy identified key elements necessary for a successful WHS performance improvement.
4 2. The WHS strategy- An overview A key to enhancing our organizational performance in WHS is to strengthen the existing approach, establishing a consistent, well managed WHS system (WHSMS) which supports best practice. The WHSMS has been defined in the context of this Strategy as: the part of the overall management system which includes the organizational structure, planning activities, responsibilities, practices, procedures, processes and resources for developing, implementing, achieving, reviewing and maintaining the WHS policy to manage the WHS risks associated with the business of the organization. *Australian/New Zealand Standard 4801:2001 Occupational health and safety management systems pg. 4 The priority areas have been identified through a review of: Our existing programs and comparison with WHS legislation to identify gaps; Our current data management systems, procedures, standards, and the ability to provide analysis of incident and injury trends and root cause analysis. The level and consistency of training of employees, contractors and management currently performed across the organization. The key Priority areas for improvement and development are: Contractor management Isolation LOTO ( lock out tag out) Machine and Equipment guarding Manual handling Chain of responsibilities PMP management Safety inspections Auditing Task and induction training Risk assessments Slips trips and falls Figure 1
