CAN/ULC-S524 AMENDMENT 1 PUBLISHED February 2011

WHY Clarifications New requirements (Technology changes) Minor Corrections

SCOPE Voluntary Installations Clarification Installation of Fire Alarm Systems APPLIES

SCOPE Voluntary Installations Scope note This standard is intended to apply to both required and voluntary fire alarm installations.

POWER BUSSES A very significant change Concern is system survivability Keeps with the philosophy of As significant as Fault Isolators on Data Communication Links

POWER BUSSES Is this a BIG change? YES

POWER BUSSES A fault including a fault caused by fire, on a power buss could result in loss of that function on more than one fire zone. APPLIES TO MANY SITUATIONS INCLUDING: POWER TO DISTRIBUTED AMPLIFIERS, POWER TO 4- WIRE SMOKE DETECTORS, POWER FROM ADDER POWER SUPPLIES TO STROBES.

POWER BUSSES Where a Power Buss Circuit serves more than 1 Floor A fault on one zone (open, short or ground) Shall not prevent normal operation of input or output field devices in more than one fire alarm zone. A class A circuit with fault isolation modules or equivalent shall be used.

FIBRE OPTICS Fibre Optics

FIBRE OPTICS Fibre Optics Cables shall be provided with mechanical protection similar to electrical conduit as in CEC Section 32

FIBRE OPTICS Fibre Optics Cables shall be DEDICATED to fire alarm Each junction access enclosure marked FIRE ALARM

FIBRE OPTICS EXCEPTION: Where multiple strand Fibre Optics Cables are not dedicated to fire alarm, the fire alarm system shall continue to function despite any impairment of other systems that share the cable.

SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEMS Interface to or programming of smoke control systems cannot be checked or confirmed if the Smoke Control operation is not known. Documentation MUST be provided at the time of fire alarm installation.

SMOKE CONTROL SYSTEMS Sequence of smoke control operation. Diagram of type and location of all smoke control equipment (fans, dampers, etc.) Identify building areas smoke control serves. Documentation to be maintained on site.

SMOKE CONTROL PLANS

STAND ALONE SYSTEMS DELETED Requirement to maintain SYNCRONIZATION in the stand alone.

CONTROL OF VISIBLE SIGNALS When should Visible signals (strobes) turn off?

CONTROL OF VISIBLE SIGNALS Visible signals (strobes) are intended to supplement audible signals. Visible signals MUST turn off when Signal Silence occurs. Visible signals such as Fire Do Not Enter turn off at Reset.

NOT AN OPTION Signals Must ALARM + SIGNAL SILENCE +

DUCT SMOKE DETECTORS Duct smoke detector sampling tubes MAY be mounted vertically in the duct at the top.

DUCT SMOKE DETECTORS Duct smoke detector sampling tubes MAY be mounted vertically in the duct at the top.

CONNECTION TO A MONITORING SYSTEM Connections to a Fire Receiving Centre transmitter must be at a DEMARKATION TERMINAL BOX. The Demarcation Terminal Box must have a minimum of 12 terminals, must be located in the same room as the fire alarm control unit, must be labelled FIRE ALARM DEMARKATION
