4 I THE 5 PILLARS Islam is based on five pillars. This means it is based on five very important things that we MUST follow. 1. Shahadah - To believe in and worship only Allah. To believe that Muhammad (pbuh) is His messenger. 2. Salah - We must pray the Salah five times a day. The daily prayers are Fajr, Zohr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. 3. Zakah - We purify our wealth by giving a small amount to the poor. This is given from our extra wealth. 4. Sawm - Means fasting in the month of Ramadhan. We fast from before Fajr until Maghrib (sunset). 5. Hajj - Is the pilgrimage to Makkah. We perform the Hajj at least once in our lifetime, if we can do it. 5 I ISLAM Islam is the deen of the Muslims. Islam is an Arabic word which is taken from the words peace and submission. We submit to Allah by choosing to follow His guidance and to not do anything against His wishes. When we follow Islam, there is peace: peace in our lives; peace in the community and peace in the world. Islam is not only a religion but a way of life. Islam is the way of life for all the Muslims in the world. A Muslim is a person who follows the command of Allah in every part of his or her life. Islam is not a new religion. All the people who followed the true teachings of their prophets were Muslims. I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 5
6 I SHAHADAH When people become Muslims they say the shahadah with their mouths. They also believe it in their hearts. Shahadah means to bear witness to something. In Islam, it means to bear witness to the oneness of Allah. The first part is to bear witness that there is only one God - Allah - Who alone we worship. The second part is to bear witness that Muhammad (pbuh) is the last and final messenger of Allah. A person who believes the shahadah in his or her heart is indeed a Muslim. All Muslims believe the Shadahah. All prophets taught that Allah is one, without a partner or a son. They told us to worship only Allah. I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 6

8 I be good I We must try our best to be good and follow Islam like we should, by showing respect to mum and dad and keeping away from evil and bad. We must stay on the path that is straight and a great love for truth it will create. By leaving all our selfishness behind, we will become just, honest and kind. We should go to the mosque and pray and learn about Islam every day. Only if we practice all that we learn, happiness and paradise we will earn. I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 8
9 I Shahadah I To believe that Allah is only one, the creator of everything - including man. Its Allah we worship, to him we pray, the Lord and Master of the final day. In Muhammad we also believe, prophethood and wahi he did receive. He was the last and final guide, whose message will forever reside. So leave falsehood and evil aside and let Islam in our hearts abide. Success and happiness will only thrive when the Shahadah in our heart is alive. I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 9

13 I al qur'an...this day I have perfected your religion for you, completed my favours upon you, and have chosen Islam as your religion Surah Al Ma'idah(5): verse 3 The Qur'an was revealed over a period of 23 years. The verses of the Qur'an came down piecemeal (a little at a time) untilthe Qur'an was completed. We learn that Allah chose the name Islam as our way of life. We learn that Islam is the perfect way of life. We also learn that Islam is based purely on the guidance of Allah - it is not man made. Nothing new should be added to Islam because Allah had already perfected and completed it. INTERESTING FACTS Islam is the fastest growing religion in the world. More people are accepting Islam than any other religion. It is the fastest growing religion in Europe and America. The truth of Islam is clearly seen in the Holy Qur'an which has helped improve the lives of billions of humans. Even today, people turn to the Qur'an for guidance and are moved by the words of Allah. 15 I al hadith "Whoever dies knowing that there is no other god but Allah will enter paradise." In Islam, the most basic and the most important belief is Tawheed. This is the belief in Allah who is our only true Creator, Master and Sustainer of the universe. He is the Lord towards whom we direct all our worship. Muslim Muslim We must truly believe this in our hearts for us to be Muslims. It is easy to say this with our lips but its only when we believe this in our heart and act upon this that we will be successful. SOURCES The Sahabah were the companions of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). They passed down information about the Prophet (pbuh) and about his life to the next generation. They also passed down any advice and teachings the Prophet (pbuh) had given them. These sayings were then collected by later scholars and put into books. There are many great Hadith collections and great Muhadith (Hadith scholars) that came in the later generations. In the Hereafter, Allah will reward those who believe in and live by this fact, with Paradise. Question: What is a Hadith? Hadith means news or information. In Islam, Hadith refers to sayings and doings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh); actions done with his approval and information which is related to him (e.g. his description). I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 15
16 I be a'mazed Its time for Fajr Salah. Help Abdullah get to the Masjid as quickly as possible. Salah is an important part of Islam. Muslims must perform Salah, five times a day. The five prayers are Fajr, Zohr, Asr, Maghrib and Isha. According to Hadith, a person who performs Salah with Jamaat (congregation) will get 27 times more reward than performing it on his own. 17 I Touched by the truth Mus ab bin Umair and Asad bin Zurarah were sitting under the shade of a wall, resting from the hot desert sun. Earlier that morning they had been talking to some of the people of Yathrib about Islam. As they sat and rested, they chatted with each other. Suddenly, Usaid bin Hudair came towards them and was angry, in fact he was very angry. He had his spear with him and was looking to sort someone out. He saw the two companions talking to each other and recognised them. He began to march towards them, shaking his spear menacingly as he strode. Now Usaid wasn t a violent fellow but was a strong and courageous man. He was very well respected in Yathrib and was considered an intelligent and wise person. He was the chief of his tribe but had spent his life worshipping idols. When he reached the two friends, he spoke to them angrily. He said that he wasn t happy that these two Muslims were speaking to the people of Yathrib. He knew that many people had accepted Islam but he felt that idol worship was still the correct religion! Mus ab knew that Usaid was very angry and might not listen to them. Mus ab spoke to him in a soft and gentle voice. Brother, he said, Why don t you sit with us for a few moments and listen to what we have to say? Mus ab continued, If you don t like what we say then do as you wish. This was a reasonable idea and Usaid accepted it. He stuck his spear into the sand and sat down to listen to what they had to say. Mus ab explained to him about Islam and how it was the correct way of life for human beings. He told him that Islam encouraged people to be good and to leave all bad and evil things. He spoke to him about Allah and about the day of Judgement. He talked for a short time and then recited some verses of the Qur'an. I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 17
18 I Touched by the truth - part 2 The expression on Usaid s face changed as the words melted his heart. His anger went away and tears of joy rolled down his cheeks. He had seen the truth and knew that these wonderful words of wisdom could only be from Allah. They moved him so much that he hugged Mus ab and accepted Islam on the spot. Usaid had experienced the truth and became a pious and respected Muslim. He was kind and considerate and would help the poor and needy. The people of Yathrib loved him even more and respected this just and honourable man. The words of wisdom and truth had changed him just as it has changed billions of lives throughout the world. THE MESSAGE OF THE QUR'AN Many people have studied Islam in the past. Whenever a person comes to the Qur'an with an open and sincere heart, Allah guides that person. This 'hidayah' - true guidance - is a great gift and blessing from Allah. We should spend a little time everyday studying the Qur'an, not just reading the Qur'an in Arabic but also understanding the message and guidance of the Qur'an. The Qur'an may be over 1400 years old but the message is still important and relevant today. This is part of the miracle of the Qur'an. May Allah guide us all to the truth and keep us on the straight path. (Ameen) I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 18
19 I Great Sadness and Joy Abdul Muttalib had been very sad at the death of his son, Abdullah. He had loved Abdullah more than any of his other sons. However, Abdullah had recently passed away whilst returning from a trade journey. This was near Yathrib and he was buried there. What saddened Abdul Muttalib more was that Abdullah had passed away so shortly after his marriage to the lady Amina. It was a great match and everyone in Makkah had been overjoyed with this wonderful union. Amina was very sad by the sudden death of her husband. She didn t want Abdullah to go on this trade journey in the first place. Instead, she wanted to spend some time with her new husband whom she loved dearly. From all this sadness there suddenly came the sounds of celebration coming from Amina s house. People rushed to find Abdul Muttalib to give him the good news but he could not be seen anywhere. They knew the best place to find him would be at the Ka'bah so they rushed there. When they finally met Abdul Muttalib they gave him the good news of the birth of his grandson. Abdul Muttalib was overjoyed at this wonderful news and thanked Allah for this great blessing and happiness. Little did Abdullah know that this child would become the greatest person to walk on the face of this Earth. This child grew up to become Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), the last and final messenger of Allah. I is for Islam Islamic Activity Lessons Page 19

28 j JUSTICE On the day of Judgement, those people who were just in ruling will be shaded under the throne of Allah. The people who were just will be seated on pulpits made of light, in the presence of Allah. When a nation is ruled with justice, the effects are felt all around. The effects are even felt by animals. One moment in the life of a just ruler is better than sixty years of worship. In Muslim history, even high profile rulers were brought to court to answer charges made by common people. On the day of Judgement, Allah will mete out justice to the oppressed - oppressors will be brought to justice. J is for Justice Islamic Activity Lessons Page 28
29 j CHARACTER Islam teaches us good manners. The Prophet (pbuh) said, "The best of you are those who have the best manners." The Prophet(pbuh) is our role model so we should try to be like him. We should take his advice on all matters. We must always be honest and tell the truth. We should never lie or deceive anyone. We must be trustworthy. We must be kind and helpful to all. We mustn't look down on others nor think we are superior to them. We must show respect to our parents by being helpful and kind to them. We should listen to them and obey them. We can't bully, hit or insult anyone. These qualities are not from Islam and Allah doesn't like the unjust. J is for Justice Islamic Activity Lessons Page 29

32 j goodness j How do we become good? Here is a clue. Whenever we say anything, it must be true. When we play outside, we must not fight. When we talk to others, we say what is right. We must try to be friendly and never rude and also be happy and in a good mood. We must be trustworthy so we don t steal and for suffering of others we must feel. We must help both our mum and dad and never hurt others or make them sad. We must listen to what the teachers say; to the path of goodness, this is the way. J is for Justice Islamic Activity Lessons Page 32
33 j bad boy j This is about a boy, who was very bad, who made his parents feel very sad. He was very lazy and would wake up late. He would gulp his food, not emptying the plate. He would not share even his smallest toy and would bully his brother, a little boy. When his mother told him to go to bed, he would ignore everything that she said. Wanting a toy, he would kick and scream and didn't care about others, it would seem. He would not wash so was covered in grime and was greedy and selfish all the time. 36 j al qur'an and let not the hatred of others to you make you swerve to wrong and depart from justice. Be just: that is closer to piety (Qur'an 5:8) This Qur'an Ayat tells us to always be just. If we are just then this will bring us closer to Allah and will help us be good Muslims. When we deal with people we should be fair to them. It might be that they are enemies or have been bad to us in the past. We should not let this influence our dealings with them. If we are in a position of power, we should not abuse this by showing favour to one person over another because they might be a friend or relative. INTERESTING FACTS In the books of seerah, we find that the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) was a very fair and just person. It was through these qualities that people saw the good character and conduct of Muhammad (pbuh) and became Muslims. At the conquest of Makkah, people saw the mercy and kindness of Muhammad (pbuh) and thousands of people accepted Islam. We too should study seerah and learn a valuable lesson from this great man. In this case, it is the best struggle because you are speaking the truth amidst the falsehood. Sometimes it might be easier to tell a small lie but it is more righteous to tell the truth. 40 j Muhammad bin Qasim Back in the history of Islam, the Muslim empire was enormous. Hundreds of thousands of people had accepted Islam causing the Muslim world to spread from Arabia into many different countries. Within a short space, the Islamic world had spread into Africa and Asia so there were Muslims of many different backgrounds, colours and languages. However, there were many problems on one of its borders. The people and tribes that were against Islam had moved to the countries near the edge of the Muslim empire and would attack and rob the people living there. They became a nuisance and would cause a lot of bloodshed. The Muslim rulers of the lands were very worried for the welfare of these people who were both Muslims and non-muslims. They had lived in harmony in the past and enjoyed the benefit of living in this peaceful land. All the peace had gone and the people were now terrified. The ruler decided to send a big army to guard this border and sort these rebels and bandits out. Before long, a Muslim army was sent there and peace was restored to this whole area. However, all these different groups continued to attack the army and eventually defeated it. Before very long, the state of the country had returned to chaos with small armies coming into the Muslim lands and attacking its people. The king sent a second army, which resulted in the same conclusion. Finally, the ruler decided to send his nephew, Muhammad bin Qasim, to this land with another army to patrol the area and to restore peace, harmony and prosperity. Now Muhammad was just a youngster of seventeen but he loved to study from his teachers in the Islamic colleges and universities. He had a great love for Islam and would try and live his life according to Islam. J is for Justice Islamic Activity Lessons Page 40
41 j Muhammad bin Qasim - part2 When Muhammad bin Qasim got to the lands he managed to restore peace very quickly. He then continued looking after the people in those lands. The army he commanded also loved and respected this youngster. They loved the way he dealt with the people and the concern he had for their welfare. They liked the way he resolved all issues according to Islam. They loved the fact that he was dedicated to Islam and was an intelligent and fair man. Before long, many people began to move to the Muslim lands. All the lands near by also became part of the Muslim world. The people accepted Islam in their droves and before very long Islam spread throughout all the neighbouring countries. These people that accepted Islam long ago were from the lands known today as Uzbekistan, Bangladesh, Pakistan, India and Kashmir. It was through this youngster and his love for justice and fairness that there are Muslims in these countries today. LIVING BY ISLAM Whenever a ruler has been just and has ruled according to Islam, we find that there was prosperity and peace. There are many cases throughout history which lead us to the same conclusion. The opposite case is also true. Whenever the rulers have been corrupt and no longer act according to the noble teachings and principles of Islam, there has been chaos and devastation. We learn a valuable lesson from this. 49 k HAJJ Hajj is the fifth pillar of Islam. Muslims must make the pilgrimage to Makkah at least once in their lifetime. Although people can visit Makkah anytime, we can only perform the Hajj in the Month of Zul Hijjah. During Umrah and Hajj, we walk around the Ka'bah seven times then we drink some zam zam. We then walk between the two hills of Safah and Marwah (Sa'i), 7 times. We then cut our hair or shave our head During Hajj (8th til 13th Zul Hijjah), we spend time in Mina, Arafah and Muzdalifa. We do the Ramy of Jamarat. During these days, Hajjis wear the Ihram- two pieces of white unstiched cloth. Women just wear simple clothes. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 49
50 k KA'BAH FACTS Whenever Muslims pray, they face the direction of the Ka'bah. The Ka'bah is in Makkah in Saudi Arabia. The Ka'bah was the first house for the worship of Allah. Millions of people come to Makkah annually. The Ka'bah forms the shape of a cube. It has no windows. The door is about two meters from the ground. The Ka'bah has a Hateem (looks like a small semi-circular wall) near it. It was originally part of the Ka'bah. People go around the Ka'bah seven times. They recite duas as they walk. They also kiss the Hajar-e-Aswad. The Hajar-e-Aswad is a stone which came from heaven. It was white but the sins of mankind have made it black. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 50
51 k ARAFAH The day of Arafah is the most important day of Hajj. The Prophet (pbuh) said that Hajj is Arafah. People stand from noon til sunset in the plains and slopes of mount Arafah. They make dua to Allah. Many people weep and ask Allah for forgiveness and other such favours. Allah listens to all duas. Its like a scene from the last day where all humans will stand before Allah, awaiting their fate. The day of Arafah is on the 9th day of Zul Hijjah, the last month of the Islamic year. After the day of Arafah, the rest of the Muslim world have a special day called Eid-ul-Adha. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 51

53 k Ibrahim k Prophets were people that Allah did send. Ibrahim was one - Allah s friend. His father made idols out of stone and this action he would condone. He would sit at night and look around, sit and think, not making a sound. He saw the many things Allah had made. When morning came all these would fade. He decided all 'shirk' he would shun and won t worship the stars, moon or sun. Instead he would worship the creator of these and this is the Lord that he would please. 54 k Hajj k From Allah most high, the command came. To build the Ka'bah, in Allah s name. Ibrahim started and foundations were laid, stones were collected and the walls made. He wanted the walls to be quite high, so the stone he stood on began to fly. He built the Ka'bah tall and strong and work was finished before very long. He was then told to call people here and from all over the world they did appear. They came in their Millions - from every place, from different countries and of every race. 58 k al qur'an And proclaim amongst the people (about observing) Hajj (pilgrimage), they shall come to you on foot and on every lean camel, they shall come from every deep and distant (mountain highway).. Holy Quran 22:27 The command came to Prophet Ibrahim (as) to tell the people to perform the Hajj to this noble house (i.e. the Ka'bah). So the Hajj was started by Ibrahim (as) which was many hundreds of years before Prophet Muhammad's (pbuh) time. The people come from all corners of the world to perform the Hajj. Every town and city in the world seems to be sending Hajjis every year to Makkah. Millions of Hajjis make pilgrimage every year. People come to Hajj on different types of transport such as ships, planes, buses and by walking. INTERESTING FACTS Muhammad (pbuh) is the last and final messenger of Allah. Muhammad (pbuh) brought the Qur'an to us and taught us how to live our lives according to the will of Allah. However, we also believe and respect the thousands of prophets that came before Muhammad (pbuh). We still love and respect Prophet Ibrahim (pbuh) and follow the command Allah had given him to call people to Hajj. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 58

60 k al hadith Whoever did Hajj will return as the day his mother gave birth to him (sinless). Bukhari, Muslim The Hajj is a very important act of worship. If we do the Hajj without breaking any of the guidelines, Allah will forgive all our sins. We will be sinless just as a baby when it is born. Bukhari, Muslim Any good action has the effect of removing or cancelling our sins. However, we must have the correct intention and do it according to the teachings of Islam. SOUND SIX The 'Sihah Sittah' are the six most authentic Hadith collections. They are listed below and are used widely by the Muslim Ummah. Bukhari and Muslim are the top two Ahadith collections. They were extensively researched and also have the toughest criteria for Sahih Hadith. Other Hadith collections are also referred to and used by the scholars. The oldest collection is the Muwatta of Imam Malik. Whenever we do any good deed we should think about the reason we are doing it. Are we doing it for Allah or for some other reason? We learn about right and wrong by studying Islam. Question: How important are Hadith? The Hadith are the second most important source of information after the Qur'an. They help us understand the will and command of Allah better. The Ahadith contain the sunnah of the Prophet (pbuh). K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 60
61 k be a'mazed Abdullah went to Hajj and got lost. Help him get back to Mina. Mina is often called 'tent city' because when the Hajjis go there, they stay in tents. There are millions of Hajjis so you can imagine how many tents there would be. They arrive in Mina on the first day of Hajj from Makkah and spend the day there. They spend a total of three days in Mina. It is easy to get lost in Mina because it is so big and the tents look similar. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 61
62 k Ibrahim and the Ka'bah Ibrahim (as) was a great prophet. Once he came to visit his son, Ismael, in Makkah. He had not met Ismael for a while and was longing to see him. Ismael had grown up into a young man with his own small family. Ismael was returning home from hunting when they both met. Ibrahim (as) and Ismael both embraced each other and were so overjoyed. The command was given to Ibrahim to build a house, dedicated to the worship of Allah. Together Ibrahim and Ismael started building this Masjid, known as the Ka'bah. They built it near the spring of Zamzam, close to the hillocks of Safah and Marwah. As they were building the Ka'bah, they were unable to reach the higher parts of the wall. The stone Ibrahim was standing on would rise up and down, allowing the wall to be built. To finish the walls, they were needing a corner stone, but could not find one suitable. Jibrael brought them a pure white stone from Jannah to complete the building. Ibrahim and Ismael completed the building and fixed the corner stone. Ibrahim, by the command of Allah, then invited the whole of Mankind to make the pilgrimage to this holy place. For many years Makkah remained a city of peace and goodness. Later, evil crept into the community and soon the people began to put idols in and around the Ka'bah. Ibrahim had dedicated this building to Allah, the one and only true God of mankind. Mankind had polluted this pure truth by putting false gods in this holiest of places. It was only when Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) came did he restore it back to its original state. However, the people have been doing the pilgrimage to Makkah from the time of Ibrahim until today. Billions of people have visited this holiest of places. 63 k The great sacrifice Ibrahim was a prophet of Allah. Even today he is respected by all revealed religions of the world. There are many great stories in his life and many lessons to learn from this great man. There is one story in particular which has great significance today. Ibrahim had a dream in which he was commanded to sacrifice his son to Allah. Ibrahim was very worried because he loved his son so much. This dream appeared to him a few times and he knew that this dream was true. He was also a prophet and their dreams are equal to revelation. He spoke to his son Ismael who replied, Do as you have been commanded. Ibrahim decided that he would carry out the command to sacrifice his son, just as he had been commanded to do in his dream. Ibrahim set off with a heavy heart towards the place of sacrifice. He travelled with his beloved son, Ismael, as he made his way through the land. Suddenly, the Shaytan appeared to him and tried to stop him from obeying Allah s command. Shaytan tried many things such as reminding him how much he loved his son. The Shaytan appeared to Ibrahim three times and each time Ibrahim chased him away by throwing small stones at him. Finally, Ibrahim arrived at the place of sacrifice; he blindfolded himself so that he would not see the face of his beautiful son whom he loved dearly. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 63
64 k The great sacrifice - part 2 After the sacrifice he removed the blindfold. Ibrahim was overjoyed when he saw his son standing there and a sheep had been sacrificed instead. Allah had saved his son from harm and Ibrahim s sacrifice was also accepted. The dream was a test from Allah to see if Ibrahim could sacrifice everything for Allah. Ibrahim had passed this difficult test. During Hajj, the pilgrims still throw small stones at a place called the Jamarat. They throw seven stones at each of the three pillars, which represent the shaytan. They make a sacrifice afterwards just as Ibrahim did. This is all part of Hajj. In every country, Muslims make Qurabani (sacrifice) and distribute the meat to the poor, their family and friends. This special Qurbani is on this day of Eid ul Adha. Many children get gifts on Eid. Draw your favourite toy. K is for Ka'bah Islamic Activity Lessons Page 64

71 l LIFE Allah has given human beings the gift of life which lasts a few years. Some have been given more, some less. Allah has already decided how long a person will live before he or she is born. Everything has been recorded. This life is a test to see if a person behaves well and lives according to Allah's law. Every soul shall die and will be raised up again on the day of Judgement. All mankind will face this day. Allah will ask about everything we said and did during our life on Earth. We will account for everything. Heaven is the reward for all good people. In Heaven, they will never die and will live in blissful happiness. L is for Life Islamic Activity Lessons Page 71

73 l ACTIONS All our actions take us towards Heaven or towards Hell. This means that actions are either good or bad. Whenever we do anything, we should check the reason or intention with which we are doing it. We only take our good and bad deeds into the next life. Everything else remains behind on Earth. Once our life ends we won't get a chance to do good deeds nor repent for our sins. The time for this is now. Allah will weigh our deeds to decide who is destined for Heaven and who is destined for Hell. Allah will forgive the sins of some people and will let some pass with leniency. 83 l al hadith Most people incur loss in respect of two divine bounties: Good health and leisure. Bukhari Of all the blessings Allah has given us, most people fail to take full advantage of these two: 1. Good health is a great blessing of Allah. We should take advantage Bukhari of this by doing good work in this life for the Hereafter. 2. Free time is also a great blessing, we should not waste it by watching TV and playing computer games. Instead, develop your life and improve your knowledge of Islam. CLASSES The Scholars have divided the hadith into different groups. These groups give us an idea of how accurately the Hadith has been researched and how accurately it has been preserved. The scholars examined the Hadith, the Sanad and Matn and were able to classify the Hadith. These groups or classes include: Sahih (authentic), Hassan (good) Da'eef (weak) Mawdu (Fabricated). We only appreciate how great these blessings were when Allah takes them away. So start using them now and take full advantage of them. Question: How many Ahadith are there? 85 l The first miracle of Isa (as) Maryam was a very pious and religious woman. She would spend a lot of time in the worship of Allah and performing salah. She was from a noble family who were descendants of the great prophet Ibrahim through his son Ishaq. Their family also had a great status amongst the people because of their piety and kindness. They also looked after the masjid where people would come and worship Allah. Everyone loved and respected Maryam from her childhood until adulthood. They all knew about her good character and her devotion to Allah s deen. In fact, they had great respect for this family of Imran. One day, Angel Jibrael appeared to Maryam and gave her good news that Allah was going to bless her with a child. Maryam was shocked at first because she did not have a husband. She was a good woman who never kept company with men. The Angel explained that whenever Allah decides on a matter, He just says to it BE! and it is. Just as Allah created Adam (as) without a mother or father, her son would be born without a father. Maryam accepted the good news and was soon expecting a child. Deep down she knew that the people would not easily accept that the child was born miraculously - without a father. She was a little worried. However, she was over-joyed that she was blessed with a son who was going to be very pious and a great servant of Allah. When the child was born she took the child to her people. They were very surprised to see a child in the arms of Maryam. The people began asking many questions about the father and Maryam knew some might not believe her that it was a miracle. She simply pointed to the child and said he was born by the command of Allah. L is for Life Islamic Activity Lessons Page 85
86 l The first miracle of Isa (as) - 2 Baby Isa (as) then spoke from his mothers arms which was his first miracle. He explained to the people that he was a servant of Allah and that he had been granted a book (injeel). He told them that Allah had made him a prophet. Isa (as) encouraged the people to believe and worship Allah and testify that Allah is their Lord. The people were surprised by the baby Isa (as) talking in Maryam s arms. They were over-joyed that this miracle happened in the family of Imran and Maryam remained high in their esteem. They were pleased that Allah had given Maryam such a blessed child who would be a great prophet of Allah. This was the first miracle of Isa (as) and Allah granted him many miracles throughout his mission. Through these miracles, the people believed in his prophethood and many accepted his teachings. He was a great prophet. However, after Isa (as) was taken away from the Earth, the people changed the message and became confused about Isa (as). They began believing in many things that Isa (as) never taught and they began to stray from the straight path. Allah then sent another mighty messenger to teach the people about Allah Prophet Muhammad (pbuh). In Islam, we hold Isa (as) in the highest esteem as a mighty servant and prophet of Allah. We do not believe that he was the son of Allah because Allah does not have any partners or family. Allah is unique in all respects. L is for Life Islamic Activity Lessons Page 86

95 M MASJID Muslims go to the masjid or mosque to pray to Allah. All Muslims should attend the mosque regularly. In the mosque, we should be polite and try not to disturb people. Some people study and read the Quran there. The mosque is a clean and simple place. There are no idols or pictures in the mosque. We don t worship idols! We take off our shoes before we go into the Mosque. We make wudhu before we pray salah or read Qur'an. The Imam leads the five daily prayers and we pray the Fard salah behind the Imam. Lots of children go to the mosque to study and learn the Qur'an from the Imam (or teachers). M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 95
96 m IN THE MASJID The first Masjid was the Ka'bah. All the Masjids face the Ka'bah which is our direction of salah. All masjids are known as the houses of Allah and great care is taken in keeping them clean and tidy. The Qiblah wall is the wall at the front of the prayer hall. When we pray we face this wall. The Mimbar is at the front of the mosque. The Imam sits on the mimbar when he is doing a talk (or beyan). The Mehrab is on the Qiblah wall. It is like a curved archway which reflects the words of the Imam in Salah. There are usually lines on the carpet so that people can stand in a straight line during the Salah. M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 96
97 m MASJID NABWI The Masjid-un-Nabwi is known as the Prophet's mosque. It was built by the Prophet (pbuh) in Madina. The Prophet's house was next to the masjid. When the mosque was extended, it became part of the masjid. The prophet was buried in his house and that too has become part of the masjid. The mosque has a beautiful green dome and tall minarets near it. Fifty thousand people can pray there. After Hajj, many people go to Madina and pray forty Salah at this Mosque. It has many times more reward there. The people also come and give their Salaam to the Prophet at this Masjid but they only worship Allah. M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 97
98 m JUMMAH On Friday, we go to the mosque and pray the Jummah salah. We pray Jummah salah instead of the Zuhr salah. We have a bath and wear our best clothes on Jumma. We go to the Mosque early. We try to smell nice. We sit and listen to the Imam's Bayaan and the two Khutbah. We pray two rakats of fard salah behind the Imam. Jummah salah is obligatory on all Muslims except the young, very old people, women and people that are ill. Allah has commanded us to leave our trading and businesses to perform the Jummah salah. It is very important. If a person neglects three Jummah Salahs in a row, Allah puts a seal on his heart. M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 98

107 m al qur'an The mosques of Allah shall be visited and maintained by those who believe in Allah and the Last Day, establish regular prayers, and practise regular charity, and fear none (at all) except Allah. It is they who are expected to be on true guidance. Surah Tawbah (9:18) This ayat of the Qur'an gives us the qualities of the people who should maintain, look after and use the Masjid. These are also the people that Allah has told us are on true guidance. All upright and honest practicing Muslims should full implement Islam in every aspect of their lives. They should visit the masjid frequently and help maintain it. They must maintain it by giving from their lawful earnings and by running the affairs of the Masjid according to Qur an and Sunnah. They must fear Allah. INTERESTING FACTS The Qur'an advises us on every aspect of our lives. It encourages us to run our lives according to the guidance sent to us through the final Messenger Muhammad (pbuh). The Qur'an is guidance and a code of life for all mankind. History tells us that whenever people have followed this guidance they have always been successful and both peace and justice has reigned. M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 107

109 m al hadith A Salah with Jamaat is twenty-seven times superior than Salah individually Bukhari, Muslim Islam encourages Muslims, especially males, to perform Salah with Jamaat in the Masjid. This holds a greater rank and reward than salah performed on its own. Bukhari, Muslim Whenever we pray, we should try and pray in the local Masjid if possible and at the correct time with the Jamaat (congregational prayer). If we are not near the Masjid, we should still pray together. One person will be the Imam and he will lead the prayer. This Jamat will also hold the same merit. SAHIH HADITH Sahih means authentic and Sahih Hadith are the most accurate. The Sahih Hadith have been thoroughly checked over and the source of the Hadith has also been scrutinized. After all the thorough checking the Hadith gets classified as an authentic Hadith. All the people in the Sanad, the chain of narration, are checked: their character, memory and history are examined. Sahih Hadith may have several different Sanads. Salah is the second pillar of Islam and should never be neglected. What kinds of things do Hadith teach us? Ahadith give us a deeper understanding of many aspects of Islam. For example, in the Qur'an Allah has commanded us to pray salah. The Ahadith tell us how the Prophet (pbuh) prayed and the methods he used. M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 109

111 m rebuilding the Ka'bah Our story starts back at the time of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) when he was only thirty-six years old. He had not received prophethood yet and was living a simple life with his family. However, the people had great respect for Muhammad because he was just and fair in his dealing as well as honest and kind. The Ka bah had originally been built by prophet Ibrahim for the worship of Allah. That was a very long time ago and after all these years, the Ka bah needed some urgent repairs to it. There had been floods, which had weakened the walls, and of course the years had taken its toll on the building. The Makkan tribes got together and agreed to rebuild the Ka bah. They would rebuild the walls and make them higher. They would also put a roof on it and make the door much higher off the ground. This would make it stronger and more secure against robbers. The Makkans also decided that they would only use money that they had earned through lawful means. This meant that any money they got from wrong means, such as stealing and robbery, would not be used. Before very long, the work was started and the wall was broken down to the green cobbled foundations. When they tried to move the foundations there was a shake and they realised that they should not go any further. The Makkans then started to rebuild the Ka'bah with all its modifications. The Makkans worked very hard and it came to the stage where they had to put the Hajar-i-Aswad, the black stone, back in its place. All the tribes wanted the honour of fitting the black stone and before long there was a major disagreement. Each tribe began to put its case why they should be allowed to replace the stone. A few days dragged on and it came to the stage that the Makkans were ready to fight amongst each other just to decide who should fit this sacred black stone in its place. A wise man in their meeting tried to prevent the bloodshed so he suggested that the next person who walked into the mosque should decide amongst the tribes and they would all agree. The Makkans were waiting for the next person to come to the Ka bah. They were very excited especially when they saw Muhammad coming towards the Ka bah. M is for Masjid Islamic Activity Lessons Page 111
112 m rebuilding the Ka'bah - part2 When the Makkans saw Muhammad (pbuh) approaching, they began shouting, Al-Amin is here! Al-Amin is here! They knew that he was very just and would make the best decision. The Makkans all presented their cases and Muhammad listened to them all. He then asked someone to place a cloth on the ground and he placed the black stone in the middle. He asked all the leaders of each tribe to lift this cloth and carry it to the place where the stone was going to be fitted. The tribes carried it to the Ka bah and Muhammad (pbuh) fitted the stone in its correct place. Every tribe was satisfied that they took part in the honour of replacing the black stone and re-building the Ka bah. The Makkans were unable to complete the Ka bah because they ran out of money from lawful means. They left one part of the Ka bah un-built which was the Hateem. The Hateem was originally part of the Ka bah but now it remains a small semi-circular wall near the Ka bah. The first mosque for the worship of Allah was the Ka bah and all other mosques face the Ka bah. When we pray, we also face the Ka'bah. WE OFTEN USE A PRAYER MAT FOR SALAH. 120 n NABI A prophet is a human being that Allah selected and purified. The prophet would teach their people about Allah. We learn from Ahadith that approx 124,000 prophets were sent to Mankind to deliver Allah's command. We learn from the Qur'an that every nation was sent a prophet. No nation was deprived of Allah's guidance. The prophets were good people and never committed sins nor told any lies. They were an example of piety. The Prophets were like brothers who taught people goodness. They must be respected by all human beings. Allah would send revelation to the prophets through the angel Jibrael. Books were revealed to some prophets. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 120
121 n MUHAMMAD Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) is the last and final messenger of Allah. No more messengers will come after him. Muhammad is a messenger for the whole of mankind and his guidance is for all mankind. The message of Muhammad is in the Qur'an -the word of Allah. Allah protects it from changes and errors. The message of Muhammad is valid until the day of judgement. It never goes out of date nor is it replaced. Anyone who claims prophethood after Muhammad is a false prophet. Our prophet was the seal of prophethood. Muhammad (pbuh) was foretold in the religious scriptures of all the other revealed religions. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 121
122 n JIBRAEL Angels are made from light. They were created to obey Allah's command and continuously serve Allah. Angels have different jobs. Some angels continuously praise Allah or are engaged in some other act of worship. Angel Jibrael is the leader of the angels and had the job of bringing revelation down to the Earth. Angel Jibrael also helped the prophets on Earth by Allah's command e.g. Jibrael fought in the battle of Badr. We can't see angels but they can take the form of humans. Sometimes Jibrael appeared to the sahabah as a man. Jibrael has been described as having 600 wings and can be so huge that he can fill the sky in that form. Allah destroyed the people. Ibrahim (as) was given the title Khalilullah (friend of Allah). From his offspring we have the prophets below. Musa (as) was also a great prophet of Allah. He freed his people from slavery from the tyrant pharaoh. Isa (as) was the son of Maryam and the servant of Allah. Allah gave him the power to heal people. He taught his people that Allah is one - the Almighty Lord and Creator of man. He told them to leave idol worship behind and the path to salvation was now defined. He told them to follow what he had taught the guidance from Allah that he had brought. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 126
127 N WAITING N We must be aware, we must watch out; Iblis is watching and lurking about. He is watching for his moment to attack and from then on, he won t hang back. The straight path he wants you to leave and he has many plans up his sleeve. He will lure you away with many sweet lies. So to all his trickery, you must be wise. Remember the words that the Qur an has said and the path of piety is the one we tread. He will try to deceive you and lead you astray, and from the path he will snatch you away. 128 Risallah is prophethood. Prophethood can be divided into three parts. Write as much information about each section. Ask your mums, dads or teachers for help. 131 n al qur'an And whatever the messenger gives you, take it and whatever he forbids, abstain from it Holy Qur'an (59:7) The prophets were not like normal human beings. The advise they gave was directly from revelation. If they advised us then we know this is from the will of Allah. It is a requirement that we follow and obey this guidance. This teaches us that everything the prophet taught was from revelation and we must follow the advise that the prophet gave. We should prefer the teachings of the prophet and Islam over all other forms of guidance. We should take the prophet's opinion in all matters of life. INTERESTING FACTS At the time of the Prophet, the people excelled in the Arabic language. They would create poetic masterpieces and the poets were given a very high status in that society. When the Qur'an came, the people realised that this masterpiece was not the work of a human. The Qur'an challenged them to produce a chapter like this if they believe this was not from Allah. No one has been able to do so since then. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 131

133 n al hadith "All my people will enter Paradise except those who refuse.he who obeys me will enter Paradise and he who disobeys me has refused." Bukhari This Hadith clearly states how important it is to follow the teachings of Islam. These teachings are also demonstrated in the life and actions of the prophet Muhammad (pbuh) - his Sunnah. Bukhari Surely the best example for us is that of prophet Muhammad (pbuh). He is an example in piety, justice and humility - our best role model. MUWATTA The Muwatta of Imam Malik is the oldest Hadith collection. Imam Malik lived very close to the time of the Prophet and was a great teacher. Imam Malik would teach people all aspects of Hadith and Fiqh. He was a contemporary of Imam Abu Hanifa and is known as one of the four reknown Imams. Imam Malik's hadith did not record the sanad because he lived very close to the time of our Prophet (pbuh) and it wasn t necessary to provide the source. The reward for acting upon this guidance is of paradise, an eternal home of peace and blissful happiness. We should always act on the Qur'an and Sunnah and live our lives accordingly. Are hadith more important than Qur'an? The Qur'an is the most important form of guidance and knowledge. It has a higher status than any other book. The Hadith are second in importance because they contain the words and actions of the Prophet. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 133
134 n be a'mazed Abdullah's friend is ill in hospital, help him get to the hospital before visiting time finishes! It is a sunnah of prophet Muhammad (pbuh) to visit someone who is ill. It is the right of a person to be visited when he or she is ill. We must try and fulfil this duty whenever possible by visiting them. Allah will reward us for this good deed. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 134
135 n Adam and tricky Iblis Allah commanded the angels to bow down to Adam. The angels always obeyed Allah and so they bowed down to Adam. However, Iblis was with the angels but he was from the Jinn. Like the angels, he was a servant of Allah but he refused to bow down to Adam. Iblis had pride in him and he thought to himself, Why should I bow down to Adam when I am better than him? Iblis was made of smokeless fire whilst Adam was made from mud. This pride and arrogance caused Iblis to be expelled from heaven. From that day onwards he became an enemy of Adam and all mankind. Adam and Hawah stayed inside the garden where they enjoyed themselves and could eat of the many fruits inside the garden. However, Allah commanded them to stay away from one particular tree and not to eat from the fruits on that tree. Iblis wanted to take revenge on Adam by causing Adam to disobey Allah. So Iblis hatched a plan where he would trick Adam and cause him to eat from the tree. Iblis spoke to Adam and Hawah telling them that if they ate from the tree they would live forever. Adam and Hawah did not intend to disobey Allah but the sweet lies of Iblis managed to persuade them to eat from the tree. Allah admonished Adam and Hawah by expelling them to the Earth. They remained on Earth for a very long time. They would ask Allah for forgiveness and finally after many years Allah accepted their forgiveness in a place near Makkah (Jabal-I- Rahmah). Iblis then asked Allah for permission to remain on Earth so that he could misguide the offspring of Adam. Allah granted Iblis this request and Iblis, from that day, has tried his best to misguide all mankind. Iblis wants Hell to be filled with the children of Adam. He is always thinking of new ways he can trick humans into being evil. N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 135
136 n Adam and tricky Iblis - 2 All the prophets of Allah have warned human beings to watch out for Iblis, who is also known as the shaytan. The prophets taught their people that Iblis will try and trick you and take you away from the truth. Iblis will cause you to disobey Allah just as he tricked Adam into disobeying Allah. The prophets taught us to be aware of Iblis and to try our best to stay on the straight path. The prophets also taught us that if we ever get misled and do any sin, we should ask Allah for forgiveness and promise ourselves that we will avoid this sin in the future. All the prophets warned the people that shaytan is an open enemy of humans and always be aware of his tricks. This is also a warning to us all to be aware of the trickery of the Iblis and to remain on the path that our Prophet (pbuh) showed us. THIS PLACE IS WHERE ADAM AND HAWAH WERE FORGIVEN BY ALLAH. PEOPLE HAVE CONSTRUCTED A PILLAR AS A REMINDER OF THIS GREAT FAVOUR OF ALLAH UPON ADAM (AS). N is for Nabi Islamic Activity Lessons Page 136
