UCAS points are awarded to Level 3 qualifications to give Universities a measurable score to base offers on. Your child needs to be realistic about what grades they can reasonably achieve. They should ask their tutors for predicted grades AND translate these to UCAS points using the UCAS tariff table before making final choices Slide 16

What does Personal Lincoln Statements have to offer you? Schools and Colleges Liaison
What do Admissions Tutors look for in your application? Appropriate academic qualifications A good personal statement A good academic reference A well prepared and thought out application; a last minute application will be easily noticed! Award-winning Community Radio Station
Personal Statement How important is it? Extremely important for: Selective, competitive courses Many art and humanities courses Vocational degrees that require evidence of work experience Often forms the basis for the selection interview The largest TV Studios in the East Midlands are located in the University s School of Media
Quality over quantity Most students generally try to use the maximum of 4000 characters or 47 lines of text that UCAS allow. Yet research suggests that the quality of a personal statement, rather than the quantity, dramatically improves the chances of getting offers from your UCAS choices. We look for applicants who demonstrate depth of knowledge and enthusiasm for their chosen subject Chris Spendlove, University of Lincoln Registrar Historic City Centre Location
The personal statement Admissions Tutors will question: Your interest in the course Your research into the subject Your suitability for the programme Qualifications you have or are working towards Can you work under pressure? How will you adjust to university life? Can you communicate effectively? Are you hardworking? Remember Admissions Tutors: Really like their subject..and will be teaching the students they choose Winner of the HE Students Union of the Year award 2014
Planning a personal statement Course and future plans My personal statement Outside of the classroom Study and knowledge 200 Million City Centre Campus
Issues that crop up in a personal statement Failure to show academic suitability. Law is the glue that holds society together. Students do not develop or analyse their wider academic or work experience. I undertook a month long work placement in a care home and really enjoyed it Too much emphasis on extra-curricular activities Away from my study, my life at College and beyond is devoted to sport.. Poor editing and inappropriate use of language I want to study Business and I mean Business! Telling us you want to take a gap year or defer your entry, but not why? Assuming your grades will do the talking Industry Accreditations across our courses
Personal Statement - Average I want to study Law at university, because I have enjoyed doing it at A Level. Followed by little, or no further detail as to why Continuing with 6-8 lines about the subject Remember though, Admissions Tutors teach it I have a part-time job at a supermarket, stacking shelves and on the check-out Combined with a short sentence on what you enjoy about it giving no useful information Lists the numerous sports played and positions of responsibility held in school Going over the top, as it s the bit you are confident writing about I love socialising with my friends, reading and watching films. This is why I would be an ideal student studying Law at your university. Our students graduate in Lincoln s historic castle and medieval cathedral
Personal Statement With a little effort, time and planning you can turn an average statement into a really good one The Media Archive for Central England is located on campus
Personal Statement - Good Grab their attention with a high impact opening section or statement. Don t necessarily write this first Devote at least half the personal statement to the subject Show subject passion, as the Tutors will have a real passion for their subject Work experience Make sure you give as much detail as possible about what this experience has given you Career aspirations Show you understand where the career pathways can take you Explain the context of your achievements/social life Not what you did, but more importantly, why you did it Bring out your personality 14 million Science & Innovation Park
Things to remember You only get one chance, so take your time But don t treat deadlines as a target (both internally set and UCAS set) Only include information you would be happy to answer questions on in an interview Humour never works Show your passion and personality Be reflective and not just descriptive Get others to proof read it Demonstrate you have researched into the subject Do not plagiarise Top marks from the Quality Assurance Agency
Any Questions? Psychology ranked #1in UK (NSS 2015)
Remember: Every university applicant who takes time with their application and really wants a place will usually get one. It is worth going to university in more ways than just for the qualification. One of the safest university cities in the East Midlands
