2 AXON SUTURE Description Characteristics Indications Contraindications Actions Tensile Strength Absorption Sterilization Packaging AXON and AXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures are prepared from polyglyconate, a copolymer of glycolic acid and trimethylene carbonate. The adanced extrusion process of the molecule of polyglyconate gies the suture: Excellent in-io strength retention Excellent knot tying security Excellent handling inimal memory AXON and AXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures are indicated for use in general soft tissue approximation and/or ligation, including use in pediatric cardioascular tissue, where growth is expected to occur, and in peripheral ascular surgery. AXON and AXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures are not indicated for use in adult cardioascular tissue, ophthalmic surgery, microsurgery and neural tissues. The use of this suture is contraindicated in patients with known sensitiities or allergies to its components. These sutures, being absorbable, should not be used where extended approximation of tissue is required or for fixation of permanent cardioascular prostheses or synthetic grafts. AXON and AXON CV synthetic absorbable sutures elicit a minimal acute inflammatory reaction in tissues, followed by gradual encapsulation of the suture by fibrous connectie tissue. Progressie loss of tensile strength and eentual absorption of AXON sutures occurs by means of hydrolysis. Experimental studies with AXON and AXON CV sutures produced no eidence of antigenicity, systemic toxicity, carcinogenicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity or aderse effects on reproductie performance. Subcutaneous tissue implantation studies in rats indicate AXON sutures retain approximately 80% of initial tensile strength at one week, 75% at two weeks, 65% at three weeks, 50% at four weeks and 25% at six weeks post-implant. Absorption begins as a loss of tensile strength without appreciable loss of mass. Absorption of AXON sutures is minimal until about 60 days after implant and is essentially complete within six months. Ethylene oxide AXON sutures are aailable in and EP sizes 1 (4 etric) through 7-0 (0.5 etric). AXON CV sutures are aailable only in and EP sizes 7-0 (0.5 etric) through 4-0 (1.5 etric). AXON and AXON CV sutures are dyed with D&C Green No. 6. AXON sutures are aailable undyed (clear). The sutures are supplied sterile, in pre-cut lengths; non-needled or affixed to arious needle types, using both permanent and remoable needle attachment techniques; in one, two or three dozen boxes.
