USB 3.0 SUPERSPEED TM A new era of connectivity, data transfer and charging The next generation of the ubiquitous USB standard, USB 3.0 offers a host of advantages over its predecessor, USB 2.0. Promising greater speed, improved power efficiency and more powerful charging capabilities, the new SuperSpeed USB is poised to become the de facto standard for high bandwidth data transfer, as well as the future of peripheral connectivity. The ubiquitous USB standard Type A plug A brief history of the USB standard First introduced in 1996 by a consortium of seven companies led by Intel (now known as the USB-IF), the Universal Serial Bus standard was designed to simplify the connection of peripheral devices to personal computers and defines the cables, connectors and protocols used for connection, communication and power supply between computers and electronic devices. Version 1.1 arrived in 1998, after which the interface quickly gained wide popularity. Offering the previously unheard of ability to connect peripheral devices without needing to turn off the computer as well as directly power devices, USB effectively replaced a variety of earlier interfaces, such as serial and parallel ports. It also eliminated the need for separate power chargers for many portable devices. Three years later, USB 2.0 hit the market with a fortyfold increase in data transfer rate. Dubbed HighSpeed USB, the 2.0 specification delivered outstanding performance for peripherals of its time. For many years, the data transfer rate offered by USB 2.0 delivered a satisfying user experience. However, as ongoing innovation continues to deliver significant advancements in computing speeds, media formats, large, inexpensive storage devices, and other high-bandwidth applications, correspondingly faster transfer rates are needed to maintain productivity and user satisfaction. To address these needs, the USB 3.0 specification was published in November 2008, with analysts predicting full mainstream adoption by the timeframe. The benefits of USB 3.0 Along with maintaining the sync and go ease of dynamic attachability established by its predecessors, the key benefits of SuperSpeed USB 3.0 include: A ten times faster data transfer rate than USB 2.0 Greater power efficiency Enhanced device charging capabilities Backward compatibility 1
Maximum data transfer rate USB Mbps USB Mbps USB 3.0 4,800 Mbps Super-speedy data throughput Each version of the USB interface has boasted a theoretical maximum data transfer rate which can be considered an upper limit to the capabilities under ideal conditions. Although these conditions aren t likely to be regularly achieved in real-world environments, they do provide a valid comparison among the different versions of USB. The theoretical maximum for USB 3.0 is 4.8 Gb/s; the USB-IF identifies its true performance throughput at 3.2 Gb/s a tenfold increase over the corresponding real-world performance of its predecessor. This ramped-up transfer rate is achieved through several technical changes to the bus architecture, primarily bi-directional data transfer and an updated method of data signaling. Bi-directional data transfer In previous USB versions, data movement was limited to a rather cumbersome one direction at a time (send or receive), somewhat like two lanes of opposing traffic reduced to one by construction, with long lines of vehicles awaiting their turn to pass through. USB 3.0 clears the traffic jam with additional lanes two more wires for transmitting SuperSpeed data and another two for receiving it for a dual-bus architecture that delivers higher speed transfer along with the ability to read and write data simultaneously. Improved power efficiency USB 3.0 employs an entirely different signaling method than its predecessors, which contributes in part to its enhancements in speed. The greatest advantage of this change, however, is notably enhanced power efficiency, which translates to a preservation of battery life for laptops, tablets and virtually any peripheral connected via USB 3.0, such as MP3 players and mice. Earlier versions of USB used a device polling method, in which the host controller periodically looks for active data traffic. USB 3.0 replaced this method with an interrupt-based protocol, in which the devices interrupt the host by sending it a signal to begin data transfer. This prevents any connected but non-active or idle devices (those not being charged by the USB port) from causing power drain by the host controller as it continually polls for data traffic. Legacy 2.0 devices will benefit from this feature as well, as it is backward compatible with USB 2.0 certified devices. Punched-up power output Not only does USB 3.0 deliver a welcome increase in data transfer speed, it carries a heftier punch of power as well. USB 2.0 is unable to provide enough power for many devices, requiring these peripherals to use either two USB ports or their own power source in addition to the one USB connection. USB 3.0 addresses this need with a substantial boost in its power output that will enable users to power and charge more devices, more quickly. This specification is often cited in general terms as an increase from USB 2.0 s 500 ma output to the 900 ma USB 3.0 specification. The true picture is somewhat more complex, with both versions offering even higher output levels for different device categories. This increase in current will also enable USB hubs to support more peripherals as well as allow even more power-hungry devices to charge via USB. An added benefit: most battery powered devices will also charge faster. 2
Backward compatible with USB 2.0 As with previous USB upgrades, the newest version is backward compatible with the versions it supersedes. SuperSpeed host ports and device plugs are physically and functionally compatible with older hardware, albeit at the speed which the hardware spec supports. For example, existing USB 2.0 devices and cables will work with version 3.0 ports and vice versa, but these configurations will deliver standard USB 2.0 (HighSpeed) data rates. Marrying a USB 3.0 device and host port using a USB 3.0 cable is the only way to achieve the enhanced SuperSpeed bandwidth. Low Speed Full Speed High Speed SuperSpeed USB 1.0 USB 1.1 USB 2.0 USB 3.0 Each generation of the USB standard has included support for earlier versions The one exception to the otherwise complete backward compatibility offered by USB 3.0 is that the USB 3.0 B-type device-end (male) connector, which is physically different than its USB 2.0 counterpart, will not interface with a USB 2.0 female jack. As a result, USB 3.0 B ports will accept USB 2.0 B plugs, but the opposite is not the case a USB 3.0 B plug will not fit into a legacy USB 2.0 receptacle. This incompatibility will only occur with devices that have a non-removable B connector; in any other scenario combining USB 2.0 and USB 3.0 there will be compatibility at the USB A end of the connection, or by using a USB 2.0 cable. USB 3.0 products and applications As the transition to USB 3.0 continues, many 2.0 devices will continue to be successfully deployed, taking advantage of the backward compatibility of the interface as the market moves toward mainstream adoption of USB 3.0, predicted for the timeframe. In the meantime, certain applications will benefit substantially from the boosts in power and data transfer rate offered by USB 3.0, and it is those applications which have seen the earliest development activity and which will be first to achieve broad deployment. Topping the list of applications best served by USB 3.0 are high-bandwidth devices that currently challenge the throughput capabilities of USB 2.0, including: External hard drives (2 3 times faster than USB 2.0 predecessors) High-resolution webcams and video surveillance cameras Video display solutions Digital video cameras and digital still cameras Multi-channel audio interfaces External media such as Blu-ray drives High-end flash drives, particularly when multiple devices are attached via one USB hub 3
In addition, new products, such as RAID storage systems, previously not USB-enabled, will be ideal candidates for taking advantage of the SuperSpeed data transfer rates. Employing SuperSpeed 3.0 data transfer with these types of applications will deliver a significant increase in performance and user satisfaction. In addition, the boost in power offered by the Type B USB 3.0 cables will be particularly beneficial for hubs and external devices like DVD burners that often require two USB 2.0 ports for sufficient power. Approximate data transfer times 4MB 1GB 25GB Song/Photo File HD Movie USB seconds 33 seconds 14 minutes USB seconds 3.3 seconds 70 seconds data transfer means less wait time and greater satisfaction Implementation: USB 3.0 plugs, ports and cables Implementation of USB 3.0 to achieve its maximum benefits requires a host system equipped with USB 3.0 ports along with a USB 3.0 device(s) and USB 3.0 cabling. Physically, USB 3.0 hardware can be identified by distinct blue markings within the ports and connector plugs. The form factor of the familiar A-type plug remains the same, while two new B-type plugs have been introduced (see below). USB 3.0 cables are slightly thicker similar to an Ethernet cable to accommodate the additional wires. The cables are often, but not always, blue; the SuperSpeed logo may be used in lieu of or in conjunction with the identifying blue markings. USB 3.0 A-Type Plug USB 3.0 B-Type Plug USB 3.0 Micro B Plug USB 3.0 Plugs/Cables The USB 3.0 specification maintains the use of the standard A-type plugs/ports that have become one of the most recognizable forms in the computing world, and introduces two new B-type plugs which carry power as well as data. The USB 3.0 A-type connection is designed to carry data at the SuperSpeed transfer rate, but is backward compatible with USB 2.0 ports and can carry data from slower speed connections at the slower rate. This downstream connection carries data only and is found on host controllers in computers and hubs and seen on cables permanently attached to a device. USB 3.0 B-type interfaces carry data and/or power and are the downstream device-end connectors for devices that use removable cables. The familiar standard B connector form factor seen with USB 2.0 was modified for version 3.0 to accommodate the pins needed to achieve SuperSpeed data transfer. Because of this expanded profile, cables with the standard USB 3.0 B-type connector plug are not backwards compatible with earlier versions of USB; however USB 3.0 devices with this connection type can accept cabling from previous versions of USB. The USB 3.0 micro B connection carries data and power in SuperSpeed applications only and is found on USB 3.0 devices and cables. It is entirely new to USB 3.0 and is not backward compatible with earlier devices. Both USB 3.0 type B cables carry the amped up power capabilities promised by the new spec, with 900 ma of available power. 4
USB 3.0 Ports As of mid-2011, USB 3.0 was still in the process of migrating to the mainstream. At that time laptops equipped with USB 3.0 ports were distinctly high-end, higher-cost options, accounting for less than 30% of laptops available on the market. Other options for acquiring USB 3.0 ports include installing a USB 3.0 PCIe card in a desktop or a USB 3.0 ExpressCard in a laptop, such as those from Targus, shown at left (ExpressCard) and right (PCIe card). Those more technically inclined may also consider installing a USB 3.0 enabled motherboard in their existing desktop computer. (For more information on USB 3.0 products from Targus see the Appendix to this white paper.) Conclusion With the next Intel chipset as well as Windows 8 promising fully integrated support for the new USB 3.0 spec, the rate of migration toward USB 3.0 is expected to increase significantly. By early 2012 the market will likely see a steady stream of devices designed to take advantage of the substantial boost in data transfer speed offered by USB 3.0, with a wider range of host devices equipped with 3.0 ports also becoming available. By 2015, many analysts predict that all new PCs will come equipped with USB 3.0 ports, estimating that over two billion SuperSpeed USB devices will be sold that year. 5
