2 HIWD 3 Course Syllabus COURSE SYLLABUS HIWD 3 KOREAN AND VIETNAM WARS COURSE DESCRIPTION The course examines military conflicts in Korea and Vietnam throughout history, with an emphasis on the Korean and Vietnam Wars of the 20th Century. Focus is placed on American strategy, operations and tactics in both wars. RATIONALE This course provides a survey of the history of the use of force in two areas of East and Southeast Asia, which are of profound strategic importance today. An emphasis is placed on the American involvement in the last century with portending lessons for the future. I. Identify the historical trends dictating the natures of Korea and Vietnam throughout world history. B. Explain how a variety of historical factors caused and influenced the conduct and outcomes of the Korean and Vietnam wars. C. Demonstrate college-level competencies in reading comprehension, documentary analysis, research, and historical writing. D. Evaluate selected interpretative and historiographical approaches to the study of American involvement in East and Southeast Asia. E. Course Requirements Checklist After reading the Course Syllabus and Student Expectations, the student will complete the related checklist found in Module/Week 1. C. Discussion Board Forums (3) Discussion boards are collaborative learning experiences. Therefore, the student will create a thread in response to the provided prompt for each forum. Each thread must be at least 0 words and demonstrate course-related knowledge. In addition to the thread, the student will reply to the threads of at least 2 classmates. Each reply must be at least 100 words. For Discussion Board Forum 1, the student must film both the thread and the replies. The thread must be 1 2 minutes of student video and the replies must be 60 seconds of student video per reply. D. Essays (3) For each essay, the student will write a research-based response of at least 250 words that focuses on a specific prompt provided in the course. Each essay must include at least 1 scholarly reference in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible and must be in current Turabian format. E. The Contenders Paper The student will write a 3 4-page research-based paper that focuses on the contrasting worldviews of Kim Il-Sung s and Syngman Rhee s governments. The paper must include at least 2 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible and must be in current Turabian format. F. Oral History Interview The student will conduct an oral history interview with a Korean or Vietnam War veteran. The student will create a set of questions based on a group of topics provided in the course and write a summary of the interview that is at least 0 words. This assignment must be in current Turabian format. The student will also video record the interview and submit the recording with the written part of the assignment. G. Presidential Strategies Presentation or Paper The student will create a presentation or write a paper comparing and contrasting the strategies employed by any 2 presidents during the Vietnam War. If the student chooses to submit a presentation, he or she will create either a narrated PowerPoint or a video. The narrated presentation must have 8 10 minutes of student-spoken audio and incorporate at least 4 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. If the student chooses to submit a paper, it must be 5 6 pages, be written in current Turabian format, and include at least 4 scholarly references in addition to the course textbooks and the Bible. Late Assignment Policy If the student is unable to complete an assignment on time, then he or she must contact the instructor immediately by . Assignments that are submitted after the due date without prior approval from the instructor will receive the following deductions: 1. Late assignments submitted within one week of the due date will receive a 10% deduction. 2. Assignments submitted more than one week late will receive a 20% deduction. 3. Assignments submitted two weeks late or after the final date of the course will not be accepted. 4. Late Discussion Board threads or replies will not be accepted. Special circumstances (e.g. death in the family, personal health issues) will be reviewed by the instructor on a case-by-case basis. D.
