43 Writing in the Hope College Dance Curriculum Current Practices M. Linda Graham MISSION The Dance Department provides opportunities for the student to develop artistically, intellectually, physically, and spiritually. This is accomplished through the art of dance, and in adherence to the college s religious and liberal arts philosophies. Current Practices The following provides an overview of current practices regarding writing instruction within the dance program. The Dance Department supports its mission through the implementation of its goals and objectives. The Dance Performance/Choreography curriculum is a 57-credit curriculum divided between required Theory (36-credits) and Technique (21-credits) aka "applied" courses. The Theory courses address dance theory as required by the National Association of Schools of Dance: 1) History/Culture, 2) Anatomy & Kinesiology / Somatics, 3) Pedagogy, 4) Production, 5) Creativity. All technique courses address, to a great or lesser degree, most of their goals and objectives through movement. Writing in some form is required for all dance courses. It is primarily within the theory courses that the opportunity for research and instruction in effective writing is presented. Implementation and Assessment Program Objective Each dance student should be able to write across the curriculum. Each instructor defines specific writing expectations for courses they instruct. Outcome Criteria Students will demonstrate effective use of language and diction, fluidity, clarity of expression, and appropriate organizational structure. (Examples: papers, projects, journals, essay tests) 43

44 Assessment Measure Portfolio review: The dance faculty will make students aware of their strengths and weaknesses, and what they should work on next. Portfolio to include: Essay submitted at time of Admission to Hope (freshman) Dance Manifesto requirement for Dance History Survey (sophomore) 20 th Century Research Paper (junior) Senior Exit Essay (senior) Feedback Students will know of their progress at the conclusion of each paper, project, journal, essay or test. Instructors review and grade all course requirements. Adjudications During the junior year, dance majors meet with the department chair and faculty to discuss their past and present accomplishments and future goals in the realm of dance. The purpose of the adjudication is to encourage the dance student to continue his or her progress in technique, theory, and choreography through positive means. Specific goals are established to help prepare the student for their intended career direction. Senior Dance Majors Graduating seniors receive a comprehensive student profile sheet that assesses their individual progress as a dancer in the areas of technique, repertory, improvisation, composition, and production over the full course of study at Hope College as part of their exit interview. The senior dance majors have an exit interview during finals week of their final term. In preparation for this exit interview, seniors are asked to write and submit a brief essay discussing their perspective on how their life experience and faith in relationship to dance has evolved during their undergraduate years. Discussion of future direction in is encouraged. This written testimony provides a snapshot on a departmental level not only of the student's maturing process in art, but also of their writing skills. 44

45 Conclusion The Dance program is committed to preparing a dancer that is well rounded and prepared for a variety of jobs (including continuing education) in the dance field. The style/nature of writing for these differing purposes requires a range of writing style. A dancer today needs to be able to think and write articulately to: document, research & publish write grants and recruit support be accepted to graduate school and be competent in the program be hired and perform competently as a teacher in a K-12 program educate and persuade, increasing arts awareness and engaging audiences through articulate and knowledgeable communication about the art form. 45
