Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust Healthy Minds : A self-help guide
Healthy Minds Reasons for looking for a new career You may want a change of career for a variety of reasons possibly: dissatisfaction with your current work wishing to achieve a longstanding ambition feeling that you are underachieving or bored in your current work wanting to return to work in a more rewarding field. wanting a vocation or specific career looking for a better income and standard of living wanting to turn a hobby into paid employment redundancy You may be reading this booklet because you know you want a new career but you don t know where to begin, or you might know exactly what job you want but you need some guidance on how to get there. Working through this booklet can help you approach looking for a new career and deciding what might be the best career for you. Some of this guidance you will already be familiar with but there may be some that is new to you. 2 Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust
Information leaflet It is worth approaching a change of career in a planned way in order to give yourself the best opportunities and enhance your chances of being successful. It is easy to get disheartened and jump to conclusions e.g. I can t possibly do that because I haven t got enough/the right GCSE s. This kind of thinking can stop you approaching what you want to do. You may find it useful to use the What to do next flowchart in this leaflet. What career might suit you? When thinking about a new career the most important things to consider are: What interests you? and what really motivates you? As we spend so much of our lives working (if we are fortunate enough to have employment) it goes without saying it is really important to get it right. When thinking about a career that might suit you there are a number of things to consider: your personality your experience your skills your motivation your values Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust 3
Healthy Minds your ambitions your constraints local opportunities job prospects in that field/type of work You might like to start by writing down what you enjoy doing, your hobbies and interests, your strengths and skills, your personal qualities, and also be aware of what you dislike doing. Don t eliminate options because you have never tried them or lack confidence in doing them we often don t know what we might like or be good at until we have tried it. A useful software package that can help us learn about a whole range of careers that we might be suited to is called Adult Directions provided by CASCAiD adultdirections/. We would recommend that you complete this career guidance package to give you options that you may have never thought of or considered. The following are also useful links: assessing-career-options/choosing-careers-video-advice/ article.aspx 4 Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust
Information leaflet Alternatively you may like to may like to contact or visit a career service below for detailed advice: National Careers Service They offer telephone and face-to-face support for all aspects of employment. E: T: In autumn 2012 a new online service called Universal Jobmatch was launched and can be accessed through this site for those looking for work or seeking a career change). See self help guide finding work for more links. Volunteering Usually when looking for a new career most people have little experience in that area. Volunteering (or internship in some jobs) is a good way of experiencing that type of work and seeing if it suits you or not. It can sometimes lead to paid work. Agency work Working for a temping agency doing temporary work can give you experience and new skills in a range of jobs that may not have occurred to you. You will still be earning money whilst looking for the right job/career. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust 5
Healthy Minds Contacts/Networking It is worth thinking about people you know and what they do. If you are not sure ask them about their work and tell them about your ideas for a new career. They might put you in touch with other people they know in a similar field and you may find out about opportunities. Training When considering a new career you will need to research what skills and qualifications you will need to pursue this employment and consider whether what you have e.g. GCSE s, matches what is required. If the answer is no or some only then you will need to consider whether you want to undertake the study, courses and possibly exams to achieve the qualification/career you are seeking. This is where constraints come in. They could be financial - related to travel costs, course fees, accommodation, child care, other caring responsibilities, location, or possibly related to physical fitness or health issues. What additional training/study you are willing/able to undertake will also determine at what level you want to pursue your chosen career. Often in each field of work there are different skills levels. For example, in working with animals you could start with working in a kennel as an assistant, train as a veterinary nurse right through to if you have top science A 6 Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust
Information leaflet level grades apply to do Veterinary Medicine at University. Once you have decided on what level you want to aim for you need to research what course is right for you. You will need to consider the following aspects: Do the hours of the course fit in with my other commitments (for example you will probably need to combine study with paid employment or you may have caring responsibilities). How much time can I commit e.g. evening course, part-time day course, full time non residential or full time residential. Cost - You need to be able to afford the cost of the course. You will need to research eligibility for grants, funds and loans. The training establishment will have links to this information. Location - Are you able to travel and afford the cost of travel to the college. It is worth calculating what this will cost you per week/term. Are you able to relocate if necessary and afford to rent in that location? How long will the course be for? Can you commit to the total length of the course? Most courses state the minimum attendance rate to achieve the qualification. Entry requirements You will need to meet these and this may mean doing some study (e.g. for additional GCSE s or A level s) prior to applying for a specific course. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust 7
Healthy Minds Course Content? Will the course take you to where you want to be in your chosen career/field of work? Make sure you choose the right course for you. If you are in a Further Education College or University it is usually possible to switch courses early in the academic year. However, you may find that another college offers a better course so find out as much as you can before you apply. What will you achieve at the end? What will you get out of the course? Will this give you what you need to move into the career path that you want? PLEASE SEE OTHER SELF HELP GUIDES FOR FURTHER INFORMATION AND ADVICE e.g. Finding work, preparing for an interview and returning to work. 8 Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust
Information leaflet Action plan Throughout the process of exploring options for a new career, keep an action plan of what you plan to do next with a target date. Update this regularly e.g. tick what you have done and add next steps. The action plan/targets should be: SMART e.g. Specific Measurable Achievable Realistic Time limited For example: Look online at local College/University prospectus s for courses that may be relevant to what I want to be doing by the end of this month. Contact those training establishments to find out about open days/visiting by end of month. Calculate total costs of doing a particular course and travel by end of week. Make a decision on what course I want to do in 3 months time. Oxford Health NHS Foundation Trust 9
