2 management of the law firm, dealing with clients money, marketing, client care and EAC freedom of establishment of a law firm. 7 Learning Outcomes Knowledge and Understanding - Demonstrate the capacity to establish rapport with a client; - Take instructions effectively, including dealing with client care issues and fees; - Identify legal services provided for in the EAC Common Market Protocol. Cognitive/Intellectual skills/application of Knowledge - Set up a law firm successfully - Deal with client money effectively and in compliance with all applicable legal, and professional requirements; - Manage a law firm sustainably; - Undertake research required for any of the above; - Undertake case-management according to the professional standards - Communication/ICT/Numeracy/Analytic Techniques/Practical Skills - Advise on the steps which are required for the establishment and effective management of a law firm; - Effectively manage the time of other staff; - Use of technology to convey relevant information swiftly; - Position one-self as a lawyer for the market. 3 8 Indicative Content This module consists of the following courses: (1) Structure and Functioning of a law firm; (2) Setting up and Managing of a law firm; (3) Dealing with Client s Money; (4) Positioning one-self for the market as a lawyer; (5) Professional standard oral and written communication (6) Cross-border legal services as envisaged in the EAC Common Market Protocol. 9 Learning and Teaching Strategy The teaching method is interactive (learning by doing), aimed at developing legal reasoning and the character of the trainees. Out of 60 hours for teaching, 40 hours will be Devoted for non-lecture components (ie seminars/workshops; practical classes; structured exercises) and final assessment to exercises which would require students to carry out tasks (eg providing advice to colleagues or clients, or drafting whole or part of documents, which entail some legal research and might reasonably be expected of a newly qualified lawyer in regards advocates collaborations and forms of associations, setting up a law firm, management of the law firm, dealing with client money, marketing, client care and EAC freedom of establishment. 1 exercise related to a make business plan for law firm and another exercise related to set a law firm in eac countries Then to report the results of their research, in English: o 1 report in writing and in the form of a memorandum of advice to a colleague; and o 1 orally to their class (if possible using power point slides). 10 Assessment Strategy As there will be no more research papers, 20% previously devoted for research papers will be incorporated in the whole assessment scheme, which means Exam/Coursework/50/ Assessment Pattern The mode and content of assignments and exams of the modules reflect the learning outcomes as described in the syllabus of each module. The assessment includes both formative and summative methods and measures both legal knowledge and professional skills. The lecturers develop the exam questions of their own subject before they can start teaching the module and the module team, together with the head of modules, prepare the final exam paper. 3

4 12 Strategy for feedback and student support during module Informal continuous, on-course feedback facilitated via student access to staff in lectures, seminars, and scheduled consultation hours.
