Political committees registered with the Federal Elections Commission (FEC) Often connected with membership organizations, trade associations, corporations or labor unions Corporations and associations are prohibited from contributing directly to federal election campaigns PACs are heavily regulated by the FEC and must file frequent reports on contributions
3 Political Action Committees Started in the 1940s, became popular in 1970 s following election reforms Currently about 3,800 PACs registered FEC allows PAC to give up to $5,000 to a candidate for each campaign (primary, runoff, and general election) Over $356 million raised by candidates in House & Senate for 2006 election PACs gave $121 million to House & Senate candidates
