1 University of Edinburgh Library Committee Wednesday 17 th June 2015 Library & University Collections Fundraising Strategy & Plan Description of paper 1. The purpose of the L&UC Fundraising Strategy & Plan is to outline the vision for and strategic approach to securing external income and to achieve support for the general direction of travel. L&UC acknowledges that this strategy will develop further given the emergence of a broader Information Services Fundraising Strategy and the next University of Edinburgh Campaign. Action requested 2. Committee is asked to consider the Library & University Collections Fundraising Strategy & Plan Recommendation 3. Committee is asked to endorse the Library & University Collections Fundraising Strategy & Plan Background and context 4. Library & University Collections is committed to raising external funding for collections activity through a range of sources including individual philanthropic donors, grant-making trusts and foundations, research councils and government bodies. Fundraising is highlighted in the L&UC Vision, Values, Strategic Goals and KPAs and attracting external investment is one of the four strategic goals of the division. L&UC delivers key projects which align with both the overall strategic direction of the University, particularly around research excellence, student experience and community engagement. Discussion 5. L&UC is in a unique position to appeal to a wide range of providers in the educational, academic, cultural and public spheres. Projects past and present range from major public-facing capital projects to smaller but nonetheless essential cataloguing and conservation projects on specific collections. These projects are founded on the collections of art, museum objects, archives, rare books and manuscripts which are uniquely held by the University of Edinburgh and which we actively grow through purchase, gift and institutional merger. 6. A further unique selling point for L&UC is that we can offer outstanding facilities, infrastructure and skills, e.g. in conservation, digitisation or technical development, which allow us to deliver truly innovative and world-leading projects. The converged approach promoted by the Centre for Research Collections allows us to present funders with options to support museum, archive and library collections together in a way that is not possible at any other UK institution. 7. Our approach to funded projects anticipates emerging trends in society and government as well as within the University. Community and public engagement has long been a key component of our collections projects, making us well-placed to 1
2 respond to Scottish Government initiatives aligned to collaboration and shared endeavour, community empowerment, participation and prosperity, and an inclusive and fair society. Our focus on collecting new creative work (artistic, literary and technical) as well as historic items aligns us well with government commitments to supporting contemporary creative arts as well as research and teaching. We are also fully committed to the University s drive to improve the student experience, and paid student internships are another key standard component of our projects, which lead to great individual benefits in terms of personal development, employability skills and cultural enrichment. 8. The long experience of fundraising and projects in L&UC allows us to manage these activities sustainably and we have many examples of work which has become embedded in mainstream business after having been introduced on a temporary funded basis, e.g. the exhibition programme. The benefits of our fundraising activities to date can be clearly mapped and will strengthen our case for major expansion in this area. The Edinburgh landscape is challenging and congested with regard to cultural heritage bodies and fundraising, but the L&UC offering is clear, competitive, distinctive and highly attractive to a wide range of funders. Resource implications 9. To develop this strategy and implement expansion plans it is essential to retain the current dedicated Libraries, Museums and Galleries fundraiser post. Risk Management 10. No risks have been identified. Equality & Diversity 11. An Equality Impact Assessment (EqIA) is in draft and will be published in July. It will be updated as the policy continues to look at all positive and negative impacts on all protected characteristics. The EqIA can be viewed upon request to Jacky MacBeath prior to publication online. Next steps/implications 12. The L&UC Fundraising Strategy & Plan will be presented at the next meeting of KSC. Consultation 13. The L&UC Fundraising Strategy & Plan has been drafted by the ead of Museums and ead of Special Collections in consultation with the Director of Library & University Collections, L&UC Senior Management Team, Development Officer, Libraries, Museums & Galleries (Development & Alumni) and Development Manager, University Projects (Development & Alumni). 4 Library and University Collections Fundraising Strategy and Plan DRAFT 1. Introduction Fundraising is transformational, effects change, and pushes the margin of excellence over and above our core budgets and activity. The Library and University Collections has seen major growth in external income since 2012, securing a total of just over 5.1m in the last 3 years. Our strategic approach and collaborative working is a successful model which is being used to encourage wider engagement with fundraising in Colleges and Schools throughout the University. We have identified key projects that align with both the overall strategic direction of the University and the Library and University Collections. Fundraising is highlighted in the L&UC Vision, Values, Strategic Goals and KPAs and attracting external investment is one of the four strategic goals of the division. 2. L&UC Vision A library and university collection that is the heart of education, research and engagement at Edinburgh, with an international reputation for innovation, quality and excellence. 3. Fundraising Vision To foster an environment where individuals and grant giving bodies are aware of opportunities to be involved with the provision of innovative and high quality learning and research supported by the Library and University Collections, and can be encouraged to provide financial support to achieve this vision. 4. Background The unique strengths and breadth of our heritage collections allow us to appeal to a wide range of providers in the educational, academic, cultural and public spheres. There has been sustained year-on-year success with international, national and UK funders and others such as: Research councils (eg JISC, ARC, European Commission) Trusts & Foundations (eg Wellcome Trust, Edinburgh World eritage Trust, Wolfson Foundation ) Grant-giving bodies bodies (eg Museums Galleries Scotland, eritage Lottery Fund) Individuals (eg The Library Foundation Appeal, endowments) We have been able to offer a suite of projects founded on the collections of art, museum objects, archives, rare books and manuscripts uniquely held by the University of Edinburgh and which we actively grow through purchase, gift and institutional merger. A further unique selling point for L&UC is that we offer outstanding facilities, infrastructure and skills, e.g. in conservation, digitisation or technical development, which allow us to deliver truly innovative and world-leading projects. The converged approach promoted by the Centre for Research Collections allows us to present funders with options to support museum, archive and library collections together in a way that is not possible at any other UK institution. Community and public engagement has long been a key component of our collections projects, making us well-placed to respond to Scottish Government initiatives aligned to collaboration and shared endeavour, community empowerment, participation and prosperity, and an inclusive and fair society. Our focus on
5 collecting new creative work (artistic, literary and technical) as well as historic items aligns us well with government commitments to supporting contemporary creative arts as well as research and teaching. 5. Strategic Goals Increase the financial resources available to support delivery of services to the University and world community and the management of and engagement with our collections Maximise the potential of University Collections to encourage new research and service innovation through grant funding and external partnerships Attract funding to support the University s ambition to be a world leading research and teaching institution Create an infrastructure which can react to the changing funding guidelines of grant making institutes and trusts and foundations 6. Infrastructure The L&UC collaborative approach involves collection curators (particularly the ead of Museums and the ead of Special Collections) with strong support from colleagues in Development and Alumni (D&A); more recently there has also been support from the L&UC Projects and Innovations Team (P&I). With regard to research councils and similar bodies, there is also administrative support from Edinburgh Research and Innovation (ERI). 7. Operational Targets To achieve our strategic goals over L&UC will: meet a financial target of 15% of our total annual turnover (KPA 15) invest in our infrastructure which includes fundraising staff, engagement spaces, a communication strategy and our relationship with ERI (KPAs 6, 12) maintain paid student internships as a key component of projects (KPAs 4, 13) deliver the L&UC Projects Plan (KPAs 1-16) 8. Projects Plan L&UC Projects deliver on the UoE Strategic Plan specific aim: To make a positive intellectual, educational, economic, scientific and cultural contribution to society and to promote understanding of, and support for, the University and its work' and 'Strategies: demonstrating our view that public engagement is a key element of our purpose, linked to research impact, by promoting, recognising and celebrating success in this area.' (UoE Strategic Plan ). Projects will be prioritised in line with the need of current students and wider community. A full list of L&UC Projects both live and in development is available. Each project has a related fundraising plan proportionate to the project size and ambition. Significant projects in play include: St Cecilia s all Redevelopment Project (KPAs 7, 13, 14). This 6.5m Project will restore, renovate and make accessible Scotland s oldest concert hall and its world class collection of historic musical instruments. With its
6 extensive community and academic engagement programmes, SC is Information Services only public museum. There is a requirement for two thirds of the Project funds to be sourced externally. Project funders include eritage Lottery Fund, Dunard Fund, Wolfson Foundation, Edinburgh World eritage Trust and Binks Trust as well as private individuals. A funding gap of 1.9m remains, work is ongoing in the approach to the opening in November Museum Bridge (KPAs 7, 13, 14). This innovative proposal to develop interactive interpretive materials for museums brings together partners from UCL, Royal College of Music, University of Utrecht, Malaga City Interactive Museum of Music, and commercial partners Sonic Paintings and Baibuk. An application, led by L&UC, will be submitted to European orizon 2020 Reflective strand late May 2015 and would bring an anticipated 750k to L&UC (overall Project 4m euros). The app will be piloted with the public on the new St Cecilia s all in October Islamic manuscripts (KPAs 2, 3). We have developed a project proposal to catalogue, conserve and digitise our collection of 700 oriental manuscripts, the only resource of its kind in Scotland, which will require c. 300,000. This would be in partnership with a major Middle Eastern grant-making body. David Laing manuscripts (KPAs 2, 3). The David Laing collection is our most important single manuscript collection, including some 500,000 unique documents. We have successfully obtained a number of small grants which have started to transform the collection and in 2016/17 we will catalogue and conserve the Western medieval manuscripts in the collection. owever, we seek major funding for a full project to make the whole collection discoverable c. 1 million. Library Foundation (KPAs 2-3, 6, 12-16). The Library Foundation Fund is designed to provide long term and targeted financial support to the Library's University Collections. The fund will enable work of excellence that would not normally be possible. Donations to the Library Foundation Fund will be spent on preserving and conserving the unique collections that the University holds; fulfilling our long term commitment since the University s establishment in This involves the Library Appeal and will include the development of a Family Programme in the long term. Academic engagement (KPA 13). In 2015 we will make an approach to the Mellon Foundation to support a full programme designed to develop academic engagement with University Collections. This follows a period of research and an initial discussion with Mellon in October 2014, and builds on the success of the CRC student engagement programmes. The academic engagement programme will focus on postgraduates and early career researchers, as well as offer funded CRC Fellowships. Anatomical Collections (KPAs 2-3, 12-14). CRC staff are involved in University plans to move the teaching of anatomical and surgical practice to a new facility which will include the 10,000 objects of cultural and historic significance in the Anatomical Collection. We have successfully obtained a small Wellcome Trust grant to scope a full project to properly store, conserve, describe and make available the rich archive and rare books collection associated with the objects. UoE Cultural Patrons Scheme (KPAs 1-16). L&UC staff will work closely with D&A teams in the development of a patrons scheme for the cultural and heritage life /activity of the University.
