2 FOREWORD In 2012, an unusual thing happened in the video game industry: a new console was released for the first time in seven years, ushering a new generation of stationary systems. When Nintendo s Wii U hit the shelves in time for Christmas, it became the first in line of a new generation, whose predecessor began when Microsoft launched the original Xbox in A new portable console was also released in 2012, Sony s PSP follow-up Playstation Vita. During the same year, Nordic retail sales declined by 13.5 percent. All the while, individual game titles performed better than ever. Call of Duty: Black Ops II is the fastest selling game of all time and well on its way of becoming the increasingly popular series bestseller; FIFA 13 is EA s highest grossing sports game ever and Diablo III, the Sims 3 expansions and Skylanders Giants all surpass their precursors. The main reason has to be attributed to the continually strong digitalization, where an increasing amount of sales shift beyond the scope of our current research. To include digital sales is one of our greatest challenges, and we had hoped to be able to present you with a digital estimation in time for this report, but the project has been protracted. This upcoming estimate will in part be based on numbers that distributors acquire from major distribution services like Steam and App Store. In other words, a sound base for mapping the size of the digital market share. However, it is important to point out that digital sales is not a static concept. Unlike physical sales which can often be divided into retail, mail order (e-commerce) or pre-owned trade, digital sales is a more generous umbrella term for various ways to consume digital products, not to mention services. Amassing a complete picture of every MMO, Facebook game and the sale of virtual items is very complicated is therefore a year when we are not only waiting for news on Sony and Microsoft s next generation consoles, but also on how those consoles will tackle digital sales. What a new console generation will bring is difficult to foresee. Will physical sales increase or will digital sales consolidate as the major source of income sooner than expected? Time will tell. That being said, I would again like to excuse the lack of a digital estimation, but it is coming along well and will hopefully soon be able to show what is really happening in the industry: that it s growing. 3 THE REPORT The numbers are compiled by Media Control Gfk and based on sales reported by retailers in Sweden, Norway, Denmark and Finland. Hardware sales or time cards are not included in this report. Neither are digital sales in the form of online games, mobile games or virtual items. Historical Data Please note that numbers from reports earlier than 2010 are not directly comparable to current estimates. This is due to different methods, with other conditions since the co-operation with Gfk. Before, data was based on net sales converted to consumer expenditures, i.e. extrapolated distributor figures rather than actual sales to the end consumer. With the transition to Gfk, we have communicated sale-through numbers, more accurately reflecting the consumer market. For an up-to-date picture of the historical data, see page 10.
