GAME PHILOSOPHY: THE SETTER During Play: Normally ALWAYS plays Position 1 or 2 (Right BACK or Right FRONT) After the first hit ( Pass( Pass ), runs to Position 3 (Middle Front) Must play Defense First If she takes the first pass, Setter Out After the Serve Will go to position 1 or 2 right after serve Watch for Positional Faults Prior to Receive Will Stack other players to get as close to Position 3 Is not a passer when receiving Serve

GAME PHILOSOPHY: MIDDLE SET OFFENSE Definition: Position 3 always sets the ball Most Basic Level of Play Adult recreational leagues Lower level play

GAME PHILOSOPHY: 4-2 SET OFFENSE Definition: 2 setters, active setter is always in the front row Used most often when: Setter has a small range of movement Bad passing

GAME PHILOSOPHY: 6-2 SET OFFENSE GAME PHILOSOPHY: Definition: 2 setters, active setter is always in the BACK row Provides the team with 3 active Front-Row Hitters Usually setter is athletic, always moving from back row to play defense to Position 3 (between 2 & 3) to set (constantly during play)

GAME PHILOSOPHY: MIXED 6-2/46 2/4-22 SET OFFENSE Definition: 2 setters, active setter is usually in the Back Row, except for 1 or 2 rotations, or on serve-receive receive Setter comes from front row when a team has issues passing in a particular rotation

GAME PHILOSOPHY: 5-1 SET OFFENSE Definition: 1 Setter During the Set Usually a strong setter MUST know where the Setter is (front row/back-row) row)

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER BACK ROW, POSITION 1 SERVE POSITION

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER BACK ROW, POSITION 1 SERVE RECEIVE AFTER THE PASS AFTER THE SET

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 2 SERVE POSITION

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 2 SERVE RECEIVE

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 2 SERVE RECEIVE MIDDLE FRONT BACK TO PASS

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 3 SERVE POSITION

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE GAME PHILOSOPHY: SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 3 SERVE RECEIVE

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 4 SERVE POSITION

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE GAME PHILOSOPHY: SETTER FRONT ROW, POSITION 4 SERVE RECEIVE

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER BACK ROW, POSITION 5 SERVE POSITION

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE GAME PHILOSOPHY: SETTER BACK ROW, POSITION 5 SERVE RECEIVE

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE SETTER BACK ROW, POSITION 6 SERVE POSITION

GAME PHILOSOPHY: STACKING THE OFFENSE GAME PHILOSOPHY: SETTER BACK ROW, POSITION 6 SERVE RECEIVE

GAME PHILOSOPHY: SPOTTING THE OFFENSE Can you tell what offense a team will run BEFORE the 1 st serve of the 1 st set? WARM UPS: Using 1 Setter: Team most likely will run a 5-15 Using 2 Setters: Could run a 5-1, 5 but most likely 6-26 START REMEMBERING Jersey # s# s of Setters!

GAME PHILOSOPHY: SPOTTING THE OFFENSE TRICKS OF THE TRADE: IS THE SETTER FRONT-ROW ROW OR BACK- ROW? Discreet Signals from R2 to R1: Discuss VERBALIZE it or THINK it prior to each serve Stacking of feet Others? Remember what might happen when a setter comes front-row row or becomes back-row ## 6, the opposite, serves Team subs Many times, a offense will have a team Double-sub

GAME PHILOSOPHY: DEFENSE Libero actions Libero gets all Free Balls (best passer) Primary Passers Double & Triple Blocking Soft Blocking by shorter players (or by players not in good position) Covering the Hitter

COACHING STRATEGIES Serving signals to server Long Rally Ice the Server through Delays DELAYS Lineup check! Slow substitution Shoelace untied Rolling the ball slowly Motivation through Sanctions If I m I m losing, it s s the referee s s fault!

TRICKS OF THE TRADE Coin in Serving Side pocket after coin toss Front-row/back-row setter: Foot position on stand Line Judge speeches: SALT Service Line faults Antenna violations/signals Line calls Touch calls

PRE-MATCH PRE-MATCH PRE-MATCH ALWAYS talk discreetly with your partner before the match What does R2 give discreetly: Discussion style 4-hits call touch call help Ball handling discreet help Don t t give automatically! How can R1 discreetly ask for help? Back row violations How R2 will ask for a card Pancake plays What does a yes or no head nod mean? Ball hit the net, not player Plays behind the R1 (discreet out / touch signal by R2) Signal Sequence..Waiting on R2, signal as a TEAM BE AN OFFICIATING TEAM.. Communicate & work TOGETHER
