2 General Description Introduction A camera system designed to assist the driver when backing up (reversing) the vehicle. The camera unit mounts at the far back of the vehicle providing an unobstructed view of the surrounding. To give the driver a familiar view the camera provides a picture that is reversed, imitating what is seen in a rear view mirror. Additional assistance is given by the symbology superimposed onto the picture illustrating the vehicle width at different distances, telling the driver how close a possible obstruction is, and if it is in the vehicle path. The picture from the camera can be displayed on a standard video monitor (CCIR or EIA type). A door mechanism protects the camera from mud and dust when it is not in use. The door can be electrically activated either by manual control or automatically when the driver put the vehicle in reverse. The system consists of two line replaceable units (LRU), one camera unit (RVC-01) mounted on the outside of the vehicle and a power supply / symbology generator (MBC- 108BA). 3 Mechanical Interface The RVC-01 is mounted to the vehicle by four bolts; see the attached drawing for detailed configuration. As the camera is a fully external unit, only a minimum of modification to the vehicle is required, limited to cable feed-throughs and installation of mounting bolts. The camera has to be installed in a position that gives it an unobstructed rear view. The MBC-108BA can be installed where space is available inside the vehicle, but preferably in close proximity to the camera. See attached drawing for detailed configuration of the control box. E Cable presence check F Cable presence check Field of regard The rear view camera shall be installed in a fixed position hard mounted to the vehicle. It is recommended that the installation be made so that the elevation can be adjusted during the first setup, allowing for calibration of the distance scale. Sensor The system has a Monochrome Inter-line type 1/3 CCD Image Sensor, utilizing COTS technology. Available in either CCIR or EIA format offering 512H x 582V or 512H x 492V effective picture elements respectively. The minimum object illumination producing a useful image is 0.05 Lux (50 IRE). Exposure is controlled by electronic shutter, eliminating the need for moving parts inside the camera lens. Optics With an f= 3.8 mm lens (F 2.0) the resulting field of view (FOV) of the system is 72 Horizontal and 54 Vertical. This very wide field of view is selected to allow the driver to see objects that are close to the vehicle and to the side. Page 4 of 10

5 Volume constraints Armor cut out The camera unit is fully external; the only armor cut out required is provisions for connectors to camera and motor door. Below armor The integrator can install the power supply / symbology generator (MBC-108BA), wherever suitable inside the vehicle. Reverse Scan By reverse scanning the CCD sensor the camera provides an inverted (mirrored) picture on a standard monitor. A reversed image is necessary as drivers are generally trained to back up a vehicle by looking in a rear view mirror and this habit is hard to change. The advantage to incorporate this feature in the camera instead of in the monitor is that the same monitor also can be used for applications other than the rear view camera. Object distance markings The system is designed to help the driver to detect obstacles that are near area the rear of vehicle, to avoid collisions and simplify navigation when backing up. A symbology generator superimposes a pattern onto the video signal representing the vehicle width at different distances (see picture). The lines in the bottom part of the picture are the 3- meter mark used to calibrate the elevation of the camera during installation. Symbols show the vehicle path (the width of the vehicle) at different distances, in this case 5, 10 and 15 meters behind the vehicle. 6 Display Any monochrome or color video display can be used, please specify if a CCIR or EIA signal is preferred.
