Attempts at submitting answer papers after the deadline will be rejected. Once an answer paper has been submitted, it is not possible to subsequently replace or submit all or part of the submitted answer paper. Answer papers that are submitted after the deadline will not be graded. d) Answer papers are to be submitted at the examinee s study centre if not specified otherwise. Examinees have a duty to find out where at the study centre the paper is to be submitted. e) If not specified otherwise in the examination question paper, the examination answer paper must be submitted in printed form and adequately stapled in the number of copies stated in the question paper. Electronic submission, if relevant, will be in addition to the hard-copy version. 18

CHAPTER 3 Examinations f) A personal statement with all the examinees student registration numbers and names must be completed, signed and submitted together with the examination answer paper GRADING a) The relevant department appoints the examiners. At BI Norwegian School of Management the following grading systems apply: 1. In cases of re-grading pursuant to 3-13 or 3-14 at least two new examiners, of which at least one must be an external examiner, shall be used. A change of grade can be both in favour and disfavour of the person who files the appeal. If the final grade is determined on the basis of both a written and an oral test, and the complainant is successful in his/her appeal regarding the written part of the examination, a new oral examination must be held to determine the final grade. 2. In the evaluation of oral examinations at least two examiners must be used. 3. In all other cases at least one internal examiner in combination with external evaluation of the assessment, or form of assessment, must be used. b) Different parts of the examination can be weighted independently. The weighting arrangement must be stated in the question paper, and it must be used in the grading process. c) In case of a re-sit the best grade shall apply. d) An examinee who withdraws from the examination pursuant to 3-9, f), will received the grade Failed (F). e) As regards announcement deadlines for grades, reference is made to 3-9, no. 4 of Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. The publication deadlines for grades are announced on Banner Studentweb. f) Normally, examination results are made known through Banner Studentweb and via the examination results telephone service. The examination results are considered to have been announced when they are available on Banner Studentweb. g) Examinees who have taken an examination should themselves actively check that the grade has been awarded and registered. Any inquiry regarding missing grades should be made as soon as possible and preferably no later than one year after the examination was taken. 19

CHAPTER 3 Examinations 3-12 SPECIAL RULES FOR MULTIPLE-CHOICE EXAMINATIONS a) The examinees must use the answer sheet that is handed out and follow the attached instructions. b) The grading of multiple-choice examinations consists in checking the answer alternative chosen by the candidate against the key. For this type of examination grading guidelines are not issued c) With respect to multiple choice examinations, a justification of grades will consist of a check of the examinee s answer paper against the key. It will also include information on the calculation of points and on how the grade is determined on the basis of the scale of points. d) In case of an appeal against a grade given, the candidate s answer sheet shall be checked once more against the key. The result of this check must be communicated to the candidate together with a possible new and final grade. e) If the basis for the appeal against the grading decision is an error in the prepared key or in the examination paper, the appeal is dealt with as an appeal against formal errors, cf JUSTIFICATION OF AND APPEALS IN CONNECTION WITH EXAMINATION RESULTS a) Justification of grades 1. Candidates are entitled to a justification of the result of the examination in accordance with 5-3 of Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. However, this does not apply to the determination of grades following an appeal. 2. A request for such justification must be submitted no later than one week from the date when the grade was made available on Banner StudentWeb. When grades are announced differently, a demand for justification of the grade must be submitted within one week from the date the examinee was informed about the grade, and in no case more than three weeks from the date the grade was announced. For oral examinations a request for justification must be submitted immediately after the grade has been announced. 3. Such justification shall be provided either orally or in writing by one of the examiners. For individual programmes it may be decided that oral justification is given at specific hours, when the examiner will be available for the examinees. 4. In the justification for the grade the general principles for the assessment and the principles on which the evaluation of the examinee s performance is 20

CHAPTER 3 Examinations based, must be accounted for. If written guidelines have been given, these must be available for the examinees after the results of the examination have been announced. b) Appeals against grades (re-grading due to appeals) 1. An examinee is entitled to appeal against a grade within three weeks after the examination result has been announced, or in case he has requested a justification of the grade from the date the justification is given. If an examinee has submitted an appeal against formal errors in connection with the examination (cf. 3-14), the deadline for the appeal in accordance with this Section does not start running until the date when the final decision regarding the appeal against formal errors is available. With respect to Master of Business Administration (MBA), Executive Master of Business Administration (EMBA) / Executive MBA in Shipping, Offshore and Finance, and Executive Master in Energy Management (EMEM) reference is also made to 5-10e), 5-11e) and 5-12e). 2. Appeals against grades should be justified and based on facts. 3. Appeals, which must be in writing, are sent to the relevant study centre. In the case of group examinations, appeals must be signed by all the examinees. 4. Examinees are entitled to appeal the assessment of written examination elements in continuous assessment arrangements. In such cases the results of the re-grading due to an appeal will be sent to the original examiner who will make a new overall assessment of the student based on the re-grading of the relevant examination element. 5. Oral examinations and class performance cannot be appealed against. 6. In the case of re-grading in accordance with this Section (re-grading due to an appeal), at least two examiners, one of which must be an external examiner, other than those who determined the grade that is appealed against, must be used. The new result may be poorer or better than the original result; also, the original grade may be maintained. 7. Grades that are determined following an appeal cannot be appealed against once more for re-assessment, but may be appealed against on the basis of formal errors, cf c) For multiple-choice examinations, see FORMAL ERRORS IN CONNECTION WITH EXAMINATIONS a) Examinees who have taken an examination or test may file an appeal against formal errors pertaining to examination papers, the examination itself or the grading, cf. 5-2 of Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. b) An appeal relating to formal errors in connection with examinations must be 21

CHAPTER 3 Examinations submitted in writing within three weeks after the examinee was acquainted with or ought to have been acquainted with the matter used as justification for the appeal. If the examinee has requested a justification of the grade awarded, the period for the appeal does not start running until such justification has been given. If the examinee has requested a justification of the grade awarded in pursuance with the rules in 3-13, b) the period for an appeal in accordance with this Section does not start running until the date when the result of the appeal against the grade has been announced. c) Such appeals must be submitted to the study unit that forwards it to the Central Examinations Office. If an error has been committed that can reasonably be assumed to have affected the student s performance or the evaluation of it, the Examinations Office in cooperation with the academic responsible for the course shall decide what measures are necessary in order to compensate for the error. Such measures may include re-grading or a new examination, or other similar measures. The grade can only be change after re-grading. d) Students are entitled to make an appeal against a proposal for such measures within three weeks of the date when the student is informed about the decision. The appeal must be sent to the Central Examinations office. Should the appeal not be accepted, the Examinations Office shall forward it to the Appeals Committee of BI Norwegian School of Management. e) Measures against formal errors in connection with examinations may also be implemented even if nobody has complained about the error. Examinees to whom the error or decision applies or who are directly affected by it, shall be informed about the error and about what action has been taken, and that they are entitled, within three weeks of having received the information, to appeal the decision to the Appeals Committee of BI Norwegian School of Management. f) If a re-grading is performed or a new examination is held, the new grades may be appealed against under the rules of g) The Board of Trustees may determine general guidelines for dealing with appeals against formal errors, including what measures should be implemented CHEATING a) Rules relating to cheating during examinations, as well as sanctions and procedures in dealing with such matters, are laid down in 4-7, 4-8 and 4-11 of Act relating to Universities and University Colleges. As regards the question of assisting someone else in cheating, see 1-4 of these Regulations. b) For BI Norwegian School of Management the following rules apply: By cheating is understood a violation of the Academic Regulations of BI Norwegian School of Management relating to Examinations (Chapter 3 of these 22
