Student comments from my Spring 08 Classes in answer to What was unique and what should be repeated in future classes? DB: The most positive thing I found about this class was that the instructor shared his experience of the Industry. This makes the class more valuable than obtaining knowledge only from the text book. DM: Every business deal can be done on the back of a cocktail napkin. Bring in the Tunisian guest speaker. Marginalize the world of screw-ups. NA: I like the fact that the teacher goes over real life situations and enlightens us on current events. I like that fact that the class is NOT based right out of the book but more everyday life. I like the fact that I actually learned something in this class instead of just memorizing things enough to take a test then forgetting the material a month later, like more traditional classes. RW: Stories, listen to student (ideas, suggestions), Web Page (emphasis more), Emphasis attendance (starting on 1 st day), Try group collaboration again (doesn t matter who does the assignment Just get it done!), Guest Speakers (INTERNATIONAL, more interesting). The way you teach about international Logistics Mechanics and public relations influence in international trade most students have no idea how the world trade works. RH: Emphasis on the importance of collaborating with people that you were not formerly acquainted with. To stay within yourself, and to trust your colleagues. SM: Honestly, I think the whole semester was important, so you should repeat it all. But with next class hammer home the attendance issue, so a class project can take place. I enjoyed this class the most this semester. JP: Keep making people feel valued and making your class enjoyable. Keep enforcing the important parts of business people need to know to succeed in the future. Basically keep doing what you re doing. I like how you try to make every class better than the last. WK: I appreciated Jim s teaching style. I hate the standard lecture and regurgitate method to teaching. I see the importance in learning through experience, and Jim certainly has the experience to teach about business. In telling of his experiences (his stories) he was able to hold the genuine interest of the class. There is nothing I hate more than sitting in class and being bored out of my mind. Also, I appreciate his efforts to make the students feel more valued. Providing a sense of empowerment is a great way to
gear someone up for a successful business career. And despite how much I hated the attendance issue being forced down our throats, I see the value in it. In my own limited work experience I have learned enough to know that if you don t show up, you don t produce, and you won t have a job for very long. Despite my resistance to having to show up, I eventually learned and was able to turn around my poor attendance towards the end of the class. NF: The countless stories, there is so much I find it hard for the students to loose focus. Nothing is more solid than experiences. We are hearing it first hand. Almost as if it took place in front of us. Respect based management, Patrick's Law, Video on global society, Bring in Guest speakers, Strategic planning charts, Being adaptive to students, Analogies and stories (they spark interests) Strategic planning chart, bringing guest speakers, giving examples on somebody s business in class and going onto detail. I think you should repeat getting on individuals asses about showing up because I m only here because of the Bret Favre guilt trip. I ve learned a lot but I wouldn t have shown up if you had not made me feel like I let the class down not showing up. I also liked the restaurant examples because that really got the collaborate message through. You have really good stories that students can learn from. You also have a very positive vibe that makes students want to learn. It was a pleasure taking this course. You are very insightful. CK: Teaching student importance of showing up, taking initiative and learning to adapt to their environment. Stressing the importance of VOTING and stating why our generation is most effected and needs to start to seek out info on candidates. A live speaker from industry of business is inspirational and validates the importance of what you teach. Having an international student speak about how lucky we are to live here to encourage students to appreciate and work hard. Patrick s Law, Danielles Law. Collaborate Natural Skills. Christina s Law. Globalization Shift Happens Video on you tube. You should show videos 1 st day of class, and introduce why your teaching style is unique and current with students needs. Thank you for teaching me soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo much important information that is applicable and beneficial to my career and life. The thing that was best about this class that should be repeated is the real life business/group scenario. It forces people to interact with others they might not have, which is reflective of the business world. To show up! Good Stories, Patrick s Law, Danielle s Law, Christina s Law.
TM: Stress Global Communication!! International Business, where this world is heading. The things it ll take to make it in such a shifting market place. The importance of group dynamics. How crucial it is to work in groups. Importance of Attendance. Patrick s Law, Danielle s Law, Importance of Commitment, Global thinking, continuous learning. TA: Feeling more valued. Do the teams again. Marketing plans. Guest speaks more if possible. The test just by taking notes. Giving many points away. Keep the survey. JL: I loved this class!! This class was an easy A. I think you should keep on doing the attendance rule because that is a very good idea and makes people show up. I liked that you didn t use the textbook, because it s a waist of money when we can learn the most important stuff from you and not the book. Having NO HOMEWORK was great and you should keep that up. Just make sure you keep current as years go by. Patrick s Law- Revenue certainly. Why globalization is good. How you become successful. How to get a job. Collaboration-teamwork. Open to discussion, to expose different point of views. FO: Teamsters issues down at the point. Learn how deep into the American economy. NAFTA affected Americans. Learned about world trading. Learned regulations on air and water transportation. AG: The boat project was great. It was live action experienced. The teaching methods need to change. This was a good employee boss typed relationship. I think teacher is a smart ass? I think it was about the 4 th week when you started to discuss and educate different topics on certain types of cargo moves. You gave us examples of your life experience, which helped me better understand the topic. Also, our mini boat project was perfect!! Overall, I got my money s worth. I enjoyed the video and think it should continue to be used in future classes. It relates to the topic of this class, US Physical Distribution, perfectly. It shows how labor began to become organized, and Harry Bridges rise with his implementation and creation of ILWU. In addition, how would want to see this movie, it real good. BS: What was compelling about this class was that I think you should do it again is that it teaches something very vital in today s world. Whether we like it or not, the world has definitely gone global. You got everybody thinking certainly-at least I was. Thank you I enjoyed it. Continue to present specific how to information. Example: Look at the East/West truck lane. How many empty miles are being run? How do we solve that problem?
Continue presenting information in a problem solving format. Example: How do you load a ship? How many containers can be transloaded into a 53? More structure. A wealth of knowledge, just came out sporadically, loading ship. KB: Keep the group exercise of loading the boat. Keep the group project of shipping and finding a D.C. Maybe incorporate more guest speakers. DS: Boat project for loading. Video clips of actual ships at sea. You should continue giving your personal experiences that have to do with the topic you are talking about. Give more graphs and pictures of the boats, the cargo area, and the warehouses. Other than those things your class is AWSOME!!! As long as you keep taking an industry based approach to the class I think it will be good. What I liked was hearing the industry s viewpoint towards us, the students. The project was good. Just keep up the good work. I had fun and learned plenty. I think that you should continue to do the loading the ship project. It was fun and interesting. It was easy to learn how things work when you are doing them in a hand on way. RL: The group project was a great learning example because we had to take our own initiative to figure out what we needed then collaborate with the other groups to complete task. AW: What I think about this class you should continue is definetly the interaction. The exercise we did with the legos was a good experiment. Also, the class project. This class definently easier to understand when there is hands on activities involved. I found the movie Hoffa very informative and how it relates to the union workers. Keep the emphasis of real life applications and how the book does not cover the important details. Some students like me may benefit from hands on work with forms and important documentation. Supply chain management. Discuss on different types of transportation. Warehousing. I liked the guest speaker and about her actual experience an US Physical Distribution. I liked the project but maybe next time we can organize much better. Show Hoffa again because it helps a lot or maybe show Good Fella. Lego boat. Test 3 where class put together a plan. Give main objectives about the subject. The project is perfect. Giving an example and going through it on the board with all details help a lot to learn. The business logistic test is very informative by doing as a group. Telling us to show up. Telling us to continue on with education.
You should keep the projects definitely. The container stacking with the legos was very constructive. It promoted critical thinking and group brain storming. Those were good exercises to go through. Having the students delegate who earned however many points was cool too. It seems fairer because your peers know what you deserve course there in on the project with you. All these things briefly do have time to talk about Freight FORWARD TOO! I think the best think on class was how you gave us up-to-do. Information about the Southern California ports situation such as clean truck program, ILWU. It is important in International Business Major to know these important issues affecting West Coast Ports. I like you practical knowledge of the logistic business that gave us an inside of the real work that took place inside the logistic of the ports. Enthusiasm. Share personal experience. Keep making the class fun. Confidence and letting students to participate a comment about the issues discussed in class. Website. No book. La Cosa Nostra teachings. Examples of real issues going on in the industry. Exercises that encourage collaboration. Loading the ship exercise. On syllabus and links to 3 rd party information. Using real world experience to make sense of the course material. Open to discussion- exposes perspective. The breakdown of aspects of logistics. Understanding how they work. It is related to real business life experiences that allow me to think globally and out of the box. That we got to discuss whatever was in our mind and we got some answer. Cargo on how to transload containers to save time and money. Collaboration (how to work together) Updates on Port. Explaining the clean truck program, drayage system, rail system, warehouse system. It s my pleasure to be with you. This semester spring You are the best instructor in IBUS 75 as I noted. Your experiences about this major are very helpful to me as well as all students in your class. Although I got lost a bit from the beginning but at the end I have learned a lot from you. My suggestion to that please keep up traditional teaching style and continuous experiences. V: I love the class. I lean more from your stories than from any book thank you. J: You are the best teacher. This is the first class I haven t fallen asleep in. At 7:00 pm, my fatigue is usually creeping in and I can t hold on. But, you keep me interest and motivated to come in to more classes. You don t need to get on peoples asses to strive for perfect attendance. If they don t come, they are missing out on many years of
experience from one of the best instructors in the business. Let s do the drayage business. AB: The program that I am looking for my business plan in the future. I learned a lot from you and I appreciate all the subject-matter that you have discussed. I realized that practically is more than important in learning than by following syllabus by the text book. I learned a lot regarding supply chain in logistic, drayage, shipping, teaching, rails, and ware housing. I will apply all my learning s in my job. Thank you and I will contact you again to discuss business matter soon. Transloading techniques and teamwork. Very efficient. Terminology of the industry. EC: Awesome time learning the many components of logistics. I gave you a hard time in the beginning of class because I needed structure. Now I understand your approach on teaching the subject. You wanted us to know the real facts that are occurring such as contract talks, affect of oil prices on truckers, and many more. It was expected that we learn the material from a business perspective rather than reading a textbook. Before this class I had an understanding of logistics, now I know more than when I started.
