4 Enhancements to the Participation Centre Mercer has made a variety of changes to the Participation Centre. We are pleased to present these changes to our clients, as they will provide a broader coverage of technology jobs as well as allow for more thorough benchmarking capabilities throughout the entire survey. These improvements fall into two categories: Mercer Benchmark Database (MBD) Expansion and Redesign Incorporation of the ITAC (high-tech industry) Survey Mercer Benchmark Database (MBD) Expansion and Redesign The Mercer Benchmark Database has been restructured so that survey users will be able to fully benefit from their participation. The following is a list of the nine survey modules included in MBD, which have been redesigned to create a more balanced value approach: Executive REVISED Corporate Services and HR NEW Finance, Accounting and Legal NEW Information Technology ENHANCED Engineering and Design Logistics and Supply Chain Manufacturing and Operations Marketing and Sales ENHANCED High-Tech and e-commerce NEW In addition to these improvements to the survey modules in MBD, outlined below are other enhancements to the 2009 survey: MBD contains 940 jobs a growth of approximately 30% over 2008! A revamping of the information technology positions to reflect an evolving market. Mercer s Executive Management and Professional (EMP) Survey now provides a more evenly distributed sample of the most popular jobs across all survey modules for clients who are looking for the most high-level benchmarking capabilities at a fraction of the full MBD survey cost. More client-centric pricing with each module being equally priced. New MBD Flex option the ability to bundle any 6 modules for one discounted purchase price, adding flexibility and an easier transition from the 2008 survey for the client. Incorporation of the ITAC (high-tech industry) Survey The Mercer Benchmark Database and the survey formally known as the ITAC High-Tech Compensation Survey are joining forces to bring survey users a more robust database for both client groups. In 2009, Mercer has incorporated the ITAC High-Tech Compensation Survey into the Mercer Benchmark Database by mapping high-tech survey jobs to relevant MBD codes and adding industryspecific High-Tech jobs to the MBD position list. The combining of the two surveys will bring the following advantages to clients: MBD participants now have access to hundreds of additional benchmark positions, many of which are related to the growing and dynamic technology industry. ITAC High-Tech industry members are now able to compare data for both functional jobs (e.g., accountants) and industry-specific jobs (e.g., graphic designers) to all industries throughout Canada. A more robust participation means that clients are likely to have more data (and less data masking) when scopes are applied (e.g., location, industry, etc.) to various survey positions. 5 Using the Position Descriptions Mercer s position descriptions are a key resource when matching your organization s roles. For your convenience, we are providing you with the position description catalogue in two formats: Position Descriptions (PDF) Allows you to print and review all job descriptions surveyed and to view the breakdown of jobs according to the survey module in which they will be published. All capsule descriptions are organized in numerical order of position code. The alphabetical listing of position descriptions can be used to help locate a particular position. We have included numerical and alphabetical lists of all positions with the appropriate modules indicated. Use the Acrobat Reader Find feature and search for positions by title. Position Descriptions (Excel) All position descriptions are included in soft copy format under Tab 7 of the Questionnaire. This allows quick and easy distribution for line managers or others in your organization to assist in the matching process. Another feature you might find useful is the Filter function to search for a particular position title or survey module. As listed below, each capsule description in the Position Descriptions (PDF) includes a series of symbols denoting in which module(s) or reports a given position will be published. A legend is included at the bottom of each page, for easy reference. 6 Mercer Universal Position Code System (MUPCS TM ) The Mercer Universal Position Code System (MUPCS) is a systematic position coding structure which uses smart coding based on information that helps define a position, including: Career stream Career level Function or family Sub-function or sub-family Survey users benefit from a globally consistent position coding methodology, which facilitates access to global pay information by referencing the same job using the same code. Levels of analysis include: Pay rate comparisons between functions Workforce analytics Pay progression analysis Function or Family To find a MUPCS code, the first step is to identify the function or family. The first three digits of the MUPCS code represent the function of the position. 7 Career Stream & Career Levels The career streams are divided into levels based on the type of career stream. The table below shows the breakdown of career levels by career stream. Using Mercer PayMonitor you can combine roles at levels across functions to examine pay. For example, if you wanted to look at the total cash compensation for Directors, regardless of their function (i.e., Sales, Human Resources, Engineering) you would simply select the appropriate level and stream rather than a specific position or function code. The illustration below shows the career streams and levels in the structure. There are four career streams: Executive, Management, Individual professional and Para-professional roles. 9 Enhancements to This Year s Survey New Positions Mercer has added over 250 new positions to the 2009 Participation Centre. The new positions reflect changes in the Canadian market and suggestions from past participants. Positions were also added to incorporate new high-tech and e-commerce positions, round out missing levels in a job family or to add a global benchmark for the Total Remuneration Survey. These positions cover a wide range of functional areas and range from entry level positions to executive roles.
