Ask us about LARC LARC stands for Long Acting Reversible Contraception. Types of LARC are: Contraceptive implant IUS IUD Contraceptive injection visit our website

Long Acting Reversible Contraception (LARC) Peace of mind Choice of method Available at the time of your treatment Long Acting Reversible Contraceptives are those that do not require any intervention by the woman, making them all over 99% effective. The four methods are the: Contraceptive implant (3 years) IUS hormonal coil (5 years) IUD copper coil (5-10 years) Contraceptive injection (3 months) These methods have been shown to be 20 times more effective than the pill, patch or vaginal ring. 1 These methods of contraception all have the advantage that, once in place, you don t need to think about them until they need replacing. All these methods are over 99% effective when used correctly and none of them interrupt sex. As with all other contraceptive methods, these do not give protection from sexually transmitted infections (STIs). Using condoms offers the best protection against STIs including HIV. 1 Winner, B; Peipert, JF; Zhao, Q; Buckel, C; Madden, T; Allsworth, JE; Secura, GM. (2012), "Effectiveness of Long-Acting Reversible Contraception", New England Journal of Medicine 366 (21):

If you have chosen to have a medical termination (tablets, for pregnancies under 9 weeks), you will not be able to have an IUS or IUD fitted until at least four weeks after your termination. We recommend that you have a contraceptive injection to keep you safe in the meantime and give you chance to attend your family planning/ sexual health clinic or GP for the IUS or IUD to be fitted. You can find your nearest clinic at Any problems with your LARC or queries? Please call us on for advice. We provide all of these methods at Marie Stopes Centres. Ask our doctor or nurse for more information.

Contraceptive implant What is it? A small flexible rod (about an inch long) that is put into the upper arm. It slowly releases the hormone progestogen. It stops ovulation (the release of an egg) and thickens the mucus around the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to get into the uterus. Effectiveness Over 99% Advantages Lasts three years, but can be removed earlier Fertility returns rapidly after it s removed. Things to consider The implant is inserted like an injection Irregular bleeding can occur, but this can often be managed with medication to help it settle down Periods may stop, but this is nothing to worry about It requires a simple procedure to remove it.

Intrauterine system (IUS) What is it? A small plastic device fitted into the uterus through the cervix using a simple procedure that takes a few minutes. It slowly releases progestogen and works by stopping sperm meeting an egg or it may stop an egg implanting in the uterus. In some cases, it can stop ovulation (stop an egg being released). Effectiveness Over 99% Advantages Lasts five years but can easily be removed Periods usually become lighter, shorter and less painful Fertility returns immediately after it s removed. Things to consider Irregular spotting or bleeding is common at first Periods may stop, which is nothing to worry about It requires a simple small procedure to fit and remove You will need to see your GP or family planning clinic after 6 weeks for a coil check.

Intrauterine device (IUD) What is it? A small plastic and copper device that is fitted into the uterus through the cervix using a simple procedure that takes a few minutes. The IUD stops sperm meeting an egg or it may stop an egg implanting in the uterus. Effectiveness Over 99% Advantages Can last up to 10 years Useful for women who want to use a method that is hormone free Works as soon as it is put in Fertility returns immediately after it s removed. Things to consider Periods can last longer and may be a bit heavier It requires a simple small procedure to fit and remove You will need to see your GP or family planning clinic after 6 weeks for a coil check.

Contraceptive injection What is it? An injection usually given in your buttock. It contains the hormone progesterone which stops ovulation (release of an egg) and also thickens the mucus around the cervix, which makes it difficult for sperm to get into the uterus. Effectiveness Over 99% when used correctly Advantages Lasts for 12 weeks Can help with heavy periods. Things to consider Some women may find they have spotting and bleeding for the first few weeks, but this usually settles down Periods may stop, but this is nothing to worry about Fertility may take a few months to return after stopping the injection As it is an injection, if you have any symptoms (bleeding etc), you cannot reverse this method immediately.

Removal of your Implant / IUS or IUD: We hope that you get on well with your chosen method. However, if you are experiencing problems, please call us and we will advise you. There are some simple treatments for side effects which you may wish to try. If you do decide to have your implant, IUS or IUD removed, we can do this privately for a fee. Free removal is available on the NHS at family planning/sexual health centres and some GPs. To find your nearest clinic, visit We advise that you telephone the clinic before attending, to check that this service is available.
