1 Instructions for 24 hr Urine Collection Exceptional healthcare, personally delivered

2 Instructions for 24 Hour urine collection You have been asked to provide a 24 hour specimen of urine. Please read the instructions carefully, make sure that you are prepared and follow each of the steps to ensure proper collection. This is important because the test result may be based on the total amount of tested substance excreted by your body over the 24 hour period. Many people get their collection wrong despite the best of intentions and it is best to admit this and discard the sample rather than hand in a partial sample. An incomplete sample may give misleading results. Please follow the instructions below: 1. Select a day when you will be at home (Sunday is probably best). 2. When you get up in the morning, pass urine into the toilet The collection of urine will start from this time. Please note both the date and time on the collection bottle AND at the bottom of the form where it says start day and time. 3. From now until the same time the following morning, any urine you pass must go into the collection bottle. The last time you pass water into the bottle should not vary by more than 5 to 10 minutes from the time of starting the collection e.g. if you started the collection at 8am, the time you pass the last urine specimen should be no later than 8.10 am the next day. This is the end of the collection. 4. Return the completed bottle as directed Hour urine collection

3 Please note: n Some bottles may contain preservatives. These should not be emptied or washed out. n Keep the sample container cool and protected from light in between each time you pass urine. n If you have a bowel movement, you must collect the urine separately. If unable to do so, you should abandon the collection and start again on another day, using a fresh container. If you need any advice or further information, please telephone the department. What do I do once I have finished? 1. Check that the bottle[s] label and this form has your full name, date of birth, clinic and/or GP surgery that requested the collection and the date, start time and finish time of the collection. 2. Please check that the cap is firmly screwed onto the container. Unfortunately, if the urine leaks in transit, the collection will be invalid and the analysis will not be carried out. Place the request card in the bottle pocket and place the bottle in the plastic bag provided. Seal the bag. 3. Hand the bottle in the bag together with this form to the place you have been instructed to take it. What if I can t get to the laboratory or GP surgery / outpatient clinic that day? Should you have to, you can store the bottle at a cool temperature for a day or two. Ideally, it should be handed in as soon as possible after the collection has been completed. 24 Hour urine collection 3

4 What should I do if I spill or lose any of the urine? In the event of spillage or any loss of urine, the test result would be incorrect. You must obtain a new collection bottle from your clinic, GP surgery or the laboratory to start a new collection. If you have been asked to provide two collections, simply continue collected urine into the second bottle for a further 24 hour period. References and Further Information Further information about urine tests can also be found at NHS Constitution. Information on your rights and responsibilities. Available at Hour urine collection
