Chapter 1 Introduction Integrated Management Features PC networks are increasingly important to many businesses and organizations. As these networks become larger and more complex, two facts have become clear:the network and its components are becoming indispensable to the organization. Maintaining minimum downtime and maximum performance for the network is crucial for overall productivity. Responding to this demanding, business-critical PC network environment, hp has established the Server Management Technology Framework that includes integrated management features and management tools for manageable devices on the network. Manageable devices may include servers, workstations, desktops, portables, routers, switches, and hubs. A significant requirement for any server operation is the ability to manage fault conditions, monitor performance, control security and configuration, as well as to control devices re motely. Each hardware subsystem such as disk storage, system memory, and system processor has a robust set of built-in management capabilities. In addition to fault prevention, Full-Spectrum Fault Management keeps your system up and running in the unlikely event of a failure, and delivers rapid device recovery to normal operation following a fault.

1-2 Compaq Management Agents for Servers for Windows To provide timely status and the means for remote control, hp has developed hp Insight Manager 7 and the hp Server Management Agents, management tools that put you in charge of integrated management features. hp Insight Management Software Architecture The hp Insight Management application has a client/server architecture, similar to other network management solutions, comprised of the agent software (hp Management Agents for Servers) and the management application software (hp Insight Manager 7). hp Management Agents for Servers hp Management Agents for Servers operate on devices, performing in-depth monitoring of the device's state by collecting and measuring parameters. These parameters indicate the current state of subsystems by counting the occurrence of particular events (for example, the number of read operations performed on a disk drive) or by monitoring the state of a critical function (for example, whether the cooling fan is operating). hp Management Agents for Servers provide access to device management data using a Web browser over industry-standard HTTP protocol. This allows you to access data from anywhere that you have network access. hp Client Management Agents monitor client functions such as temperature sensing and disk pre-failure alerting on hp workstations, desktops, and portables. IMPORTANT: hp Management Agents for Servers are not the same as hp Client Management Agents. Server Agents run on hp Servers. Management Agents for Servers provide information to management applications such as hp Insight Manager and can generate alarm notifications if significant changes occur in the fault or performance aspects of system operation. Information is delivered to and from the Management Agents for Servers via the industry-standard Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP).

Introduction 1-3 hp Insight Manager 7 hp Insight Manager delivers intelligent monitoring and alerting as well as visual control of your hp hardware. In the unlikely event of a hardware failure, Insight Manager 7also provides a full complement of remote maintenance and control facilities. NOTE: To install Insight Manager 7 on the management console, refer to the hp Insight Manager User Guide.

Installation Instructions 2-13 Management HTTP Server First- Time Initialization Overview The System Management Homepage is the One-Stop-Centralized simple view for all the management information and configuration data generated by HP Web-enabled System Management software and utilities. The status of the Management software and utilities installed on the system is aggregated on the System Management Homepage. Integrated Help on the Homepage provides all the pertinent help information for the Management software and utilities on the system. The System Management Homepage group configuration feature enables Insight Manager 7 to retrieve a set of configuration data from HP Webenabled System Management software on a reference system and distribute that configuration data to one or more target systems. In addition, some System Management Homepage parameters are group configurable via Insight Manager 7. For more information regarding group configuration, refer to the Technical Reference Guide located on the Management CD or via the web at What is Management HTTP Server? The Management HTTP Server is a web server embedded in much of HP s Web-enabled System Management software. After a product that uses the Management HTTP Server has been installed and configured, there are a few items that will occur the first time the Management HTTP Server is initiated. Upon initialization, the Management HTTP Server creates a private key and a corresponding self-signed base64 encoded Certificate. This process only occurs the first time that the Management HTTP Server is started, not every time it is started. This certificate is a base64 encoded PEM file. The certificate is stored on the file system as \ compaq\ wbem\ cert.pem. The \ compaq\ wbem subdirectory also contains the private key. In order to protect the key, this subdirectory will only be accessible to administrators if the file system allows it. For private key security reasons, it is highly recommended that the Management HTTP Server be installed on NTFS systems. NOTE: For Microsoft Windows operating systems, the \ compaq\ wbem subdirectory must exist on an NTFS file system in order for the private key to have administrator-only access through the file.

2-14 Compaq Management Agents for Servers for Windows If you feel that the private key has been compromised, the administrator can delete the \compaq\wbem\cert.pem file and restart the server. This action prompts the Management HTTP Server to generate a new certificate and private key. Logging In The Login dialog box allows you to access any of the available web agents. You can access the desired agent by following these steps. 1. Navigate to The first time you browse to this link, the Security Alert dialog box is displayed asking you to indicate whether or not to trust the server. NOTE: The Security Alert dialog box shown is specific to Internet Explorer, however Netscape 4.0 and later is supported as well. NOTE: If you want to implement your own PKI or install your own generated certificates into each managed device, you can install a Certificate Authority Root Certificate into each browser to be used for management. If this is implemented, the Security Alert dialog box, shown below, should not be displayed. If the alert displays when you do not expect it, you may have browsed to the wrong device. You can refer to the online help in your browser for more information about installing the Certificate Authority Root Certificate.

The service names for the Management Agents for Servers under the Control Panel are hp Foundation Agents, hp Server Agents, hp Storage Agents, hp NIC Agents, and hp Web Agent. The collection period for the Management Agents for Servers can be configured from the hp Management Agents Control Panel. Foundation Agents Host Information The Host Information Agent collects file system, system processor utilization, and running program information from the system. Threshold Support The Threshold Support Agent allows a management application, such as hp Insight Manager, to set user-definable alarms on monitored items. For

4-2 hp Management Agents for Servers for Windows example, a management console can monitor the system processor utilization or file system utilization. The Threshold Support Agent periodically checks the monitored item. When the monitored item crosses the threshold defined in the management application, the Threshold Support Agent sends an alarm, or trap, to the management console. Software Version Information The Version Control Information Agent collects information about the versions of hp support software installed on your machine. Clustering Information Agent For machines that are members of a cluster, the Clustering Information Agent collects information about the cluster. NIC Agents NIC Information The Network Interface Controller (NIC) Information Agent collects performance and configuration information about installed network adapters at a configurable interval. Server Agents System Information The System Information Agent collects ISA, EISA, and PCI configuration information and health data. Remote Insight Information The Remote Insight Information Agent collects configuration and fault information from the hp Remote Insight Board at a configurable interval. This agent also provides forwarding of hp traps via the Remote Insight Board. Additionally, this agent supports Pass-Through SNMP for hp Insight Manager, which allows the remaining hp agent data to be retrieved through a Point-to- Point Protocol (PPP) connection with the Remote Insight board.

Using Management Agents for Servers 4-3 Storage Agents Drive Array Information The Drive Array Information Agent collects fault, performance, and configuration information from hp drive arrays at a configurable interval. SCSI Information The SCSI Information Agent collects fault, performance, and configuration information from hp SCSI subsystems at a configurable interval. IDE Information The IDE Information Agent collects fault and configuration information from the IDE subsystem at a configurable interval. Fibre Array Information The Fibre Array Information Agent collects fault and configuration information from the hp Fibre Channel Array subsystem at a configurable interval.

4-4 hp Management Agents for Servers for Windows Management Agents for Servers for Windows Control Panel The Management Agents for Servers for Windows Control Panel is available by selecting the Insight Agents icon from the Windows Control Panel. Not all tabs shown in the following screens will be available on all servers. IMPORTANT: You must have Administrator rights to access the Management Agents for Servers for Windows Control Panel. Services Tab Screen The Services tab allows you to activate or deactivate management agents. Agents can be added or removed by highlighting the agent and clicking the appropriate button.

Using Management Agents for Servers 4-5 SNMP Settings Tab Screen The SNMP Settings tab allows you to: Set the Data Collection Interval Controls the interval at which the Management Agents for Servers collect data. Set the time interval for data collection by selecting an interval from the drop-down menu. Enable SNMP Sets Allows a management console to modify a limited number of hardware -related parameters. The Insight MIBs define the monitored items that may be modified by the management console. If this system is a UPS group member, mark this item to allow shutdown when commercial power fails. Enable Remote Reboot Allows a remote management console to reboot the system. Check this box if you want to give a remote machine permission to reboot the system. Enable the Application Exception Trap Allows a managed system to send an SNMP trap and log a Windows event when an application generates an exception. Afterwards, the default system exception handler is called to handle the exception. The trap and Windows event contain a detailed description of the process causing the exception. If this feature is disabled, no trap or event will be generated after an application exception. However, the default debugger will be invoked to manage the exception.

4-6 hp Management Agents for Servers for Windows NOTE: To view the exception traps in hp Insight Manager, set the SNMP trap destination to the address of your management console. Disable Telnet Detection Check this box to prevent detection of telnet. In doing so, the Server Agents will report that telnet is not available and the remote console feature of hp Insight Manager will be disabled for this device. Send Test Trap Allows a test SNMP trap to be sent to the management console. This is a useful feature to test the setup of the Management Agents for Servers and SNMP. Clear All Thresholds Allows you to clear all defined thresholds for the device on which the Management Agent for Servers is running. Asynch Mgmt Tab Screen NOTE: Remote Access Service (RAS) must be installed to have access to the Asynch Mgmt tab screen.

Using Management Agents for Servers 4-7 The Asynch Mgmt tab allows you to: Enable Asynchronous Management Traps Allows traps to be sent through RAS to a remote management console over a modem. You must also enter the following data for asynchronous management trapping to occur: Destination Phone Dials the number. User Name and Password Enter to log into the remote machine. You may choose a specific logon domain to use, or, if you do not choose a specific domain, the domain for the remote machine will be used. Refer to the Remote Access documentation from Microsoft for further information on remote user names and domains. Retry count Redials if a busy signal is encountered. NOTE: For information on setting up Insight Asynchronous Management on the management console or Windows Agents, refer to the hp Insight Asynchronous Management User Guide. Desktop Mgmt Tab Screen NOTE: The system must be a domain controller to have access to the Desktop Mgmt tab screen.

4-8 hp Management Agents for Servers for Windows The Desktop Mgmt tab allows you to: Enable Desktop Management Allows the user to enable/disable client management. Login Script Specifies the name of the logon script you wish to modify to include the desktop discovery executable. When finis hed, select OK and the control panel will make the modifications necessary to enable desktop management support. The logon script you select will be modified to include the following lines at the beginning of the file: rem COMPAQ: The following lines were inserted by the hp Management Agents for Servers cpqclnt rem End of COMPAQ section The CPQCLNT.EXE file will be copied to the logon script directory. IMPORTANT: This action will only modify or create a Login Script file. It will not change any user accounts to process the Login Script file. Select the User Manager for Domains icon in the Administrator Tools program group to enable login script processing. For more information, refer to the User Manager for Domains online Help. NOTE: You must reboot your system for the changes to take effect. The default installation of Desktop Management components leaves the Windows User Group Everyone with full access to both the NETLOGON and CPQDATA directory locations to permit free access to clients for the client management process. This security configuration may not be appropriate for all environments. The minimum requirements are detailed below. Before modifying your security settings, you should read and understand the Windows documentation pertaining to user and share security. For the login script location NETLOGON, a specified group or user account must have a minimum READ EXECUTE (RX) (RX) permission to activate the CPQCLNT executable. The CPQDATA directory must have a minimum READ WRITE (RW) (RW) access for a specified group or user account logging in to the Primary Domain Controller. The client needs this to access the directory and write the necessary data files.

Using Management Agents for Servers 4-9 CPQDATA must also have a minimum READ DELETE (RD) (RD) permission granted to the NETWORK group. This is a predefined group of all users accessing the specified area remotely. This allows the Server Agents to access the CPQDATA area, update the managed objects table, and manipulate the data files. Remote Insight Tab Screen NOTE: The Remote Insight Board must be installed for access to the Remote Insight tab. The Remote Insight tab allows you to: Enable the Battery Allows the user to activate the board while the server is powered off. When disabled, the battery will be turned off to prevent power loss. This function is particularly useful when the server is powered off for an extended period of time. Enable Remote Alerting Reports events to the user through the dial-out function. When disabled, the board will not report events (for example, power off or reboot alert). This function is particularly useful to prevent dialing out during a reboot.

4-10 hp Management Agents for Servers for Windows Enable Server Reset Pending Prevents the sending of server reset alerts for the next reboot. After the server reboots, this option is automatically disabled. When disabled, the board will process alerts as configured. If you are about to perform an intentional reboot and you want to prevent the Remote Insight Board from sending an alert or page, you should select this item. Reset Remote Insight Board Forces a reset of the board s processor and firmware. For more information on the Remote Insight board, refer to the Remote Insight User Guide located on the hp Management CD. Process Monitor Tab Screen The Process Monitor tab screen allows you to have SNMP traps generated when a process starts, stops, or both. This screen displays a list of processes that are currently running. The following Process Monitor options are available: Select Monitoring Operations Select a process from the list to set monitoring options for that process. The following options are available: None No SNMP traps are generated for this process. Start An SNMP trap is generated when this process starts.
