3 Introduction If you are on a TNC computer and can access the Internet, you can connect to most TNC information services. This document describes how a traveler can access: TNC's Intranet TNC TNC Network files Obtain Computer support Access Voice Mail These solutions will also work for remote staff and home-based workers working on TNC owned PCs. Note: If you are using a public Internet Kiosk or a non-tnc computer, you will be able to access your , but will have limited access to other TNC resources. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 2

4 Traveler s Checklist Before leaving the office make sure that: 1. Your laptop is set up for travel: Modem/Network/Wireless Network card working properly Working ISP account or a network at your destination 2. You have all the accessories that you need: Phone and/or network cords Female-to-female RJ14 connector for when the existing phone line is too short Surge Protector Modem saver or phone line checker 3. International travelers may also want: Universal power adapter Universal phone adapter ipass Access points ( in the top menu, click Access Points) 4. Your TNC accounts and permissions are setup properly 5. You ask what type of connectivity is available at your destination. 6. You back up your data before you leave. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 3

6 Traveling Without a Laptop? If you are traveling without a laptop you can still access some TNC Resources. can be accessed at .TNC.ORG and the TNC Intranet at REMOTE.TNC.ORG, you ll just need to find a computer with an Internet connection. Notes: 2008, The Nature Conservancy 5

9 Setting up an ISP Account If you are traveling to a location that does not have a network with Internet connectivity, you may need to dial-up to an Internet Service Provider (ISP) to connect to and access the Internet. Fortunately, TNC has two programs that provide such service. Before you setup a personal ISP account, check with your program to find out if a multi-user generic account is available for your use. Connecting with an Internet Phone Some Internet smart phones, such as a Blackberry device, can be used as a modem, a practice commonly referred to as "tethering". This allows you to connect to the Internet on your computer via USB through the Blackberry. However, the service is carrier dependent, and will require an additional fee per month as well as a software application that will be installed on your computer. Be sure to work with your TIS support person prior to your trip to set this up. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 8

10 Domestic US Travel MCI Internet Dial Corporate (CorpDial) Accounts MCI CorpDial provides dial-up ISP accounts within the U.S. Complete information can be found on TNC s Intranet: Creating an MCI CorpDial Account To request an MCI CorpDial account, complete a CorpDial Account Request Form (available on TNC s Intranet). Be sure to fill in your billing information and account profile. You will be billed monthly for this service regardless of usage. the completed form to gnostaff@tnc.org. MCI Access Manager Software Access Manager is a software program for use with MCI CorpDial dialup accounts. This program will allow you to look up local access numbers and then connect to your account. Once you ve installed Access Manager, you can search for numbers by city, state, country or area code. 11 International Travel ipass Accounts ipass is a remote access service (to be used by International traveling staff only) that allows you to connect to the internet from anywhere in the world. (See: for their Points of Access). Creating an ipass Account To sign up for ipass, fill out a TIS Network Access Account Request Form and check the ipass account, provide a budget center number, and fax it to the Enterprise Helpdesk. When do I use ipass? ipass has been provided to TNC employees only to use when no other connectivity option is available. Please be aware, ipass is a very expensive option. Many times there is local connectivity in hotels (even in our remote sites) and many offices also have local dialup accounts that they allow visitors to use. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 10

12 How is ipass billed to me? ipass is billed directly to your budget center number. Be sure you have your manager s approval before you request an account. How much is it per session? ipass charges you for every minute you are connected. In many countries phone calls are billed by the minute. An hour of the internet can end up costing hundreds of dollars. Keep in mind that the charges per minute/hour that are assigned in hotels are extra from the time that you are on line. Please ask the hotel reception for details when calling from your hotel room. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 11

13 Visiting an Office on TNC s Network? If you are in a location already connected to TNC then chances are you connect to TNC resources like you always have. Unless, of course, you come from an office that doesn t have a permanent connection to TNC s network. Please be aware that the speed of your connection to the Internet will help determine the performance of the PC. Accessing Your Files All of our Linux file and print servers can be accessed remotely. 1. Start your web browser and enter the server name in the Address bar. Some sample addresses: World Wide Office -- wo.tnc Michigan Field Office -- mifo.tnc Jakarta Field Office -- idnjak.tnc 2. You will see a welcome screen for that server. Click a link to go a specific folder. The Public directory does not require an ID/password. All other directories will require you to login using your Linux ID/password, for that server, to open a folder. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 12

14 3. If prompted to login again, click Cancel. 4. To go to your personal U drive, use <server name>.tnc/~<your user name>. 15 Visiting an Office off TNC s Network? If you are visiting a location that does not have a pre-established connection to TNC then you will have to establish a network connection yourself before you can access to TNC resources. Connecting to an ISP Before you can access TNC resources you must establish a connection with an ISP. The ISP service allows you to reach the Internet, and in turn TNC s Intranet. Following the instructions given to you when you created your ISP account connect to your ISP. Please be aware that the speed of your connection to the Internet will help determine the performance of the PC. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 14

16 Connecting Safely to a Public Wireless Hotspots To make network access easier for their users, public hotspots typically leave all security turned off. This means that all the data you send from a hotspot is probably unencrypted, and that anyone sitting within range of the wireless LAN can access your computer. Therefore, when you unwind at a café, airport, or other public location, a few simple measures will help enhance your security. 1. Ensure your Symantec firewall is running. 2. Do not connect to "computer-to-computer" or ad-hoc networks. 3. Only perform financial transactions over secure servers. These servers are marked by a lock that appears in your browser. They also start with "https" instead of "http." 4. Turn off file and print sharing on your computer. 5. Turn off your WiFi antenna when you're not deliberately using a wireless network. Connect your VPN The VPN provides an easy-to-use, browserbased access to internal TNC web sites from the Internet. 2008, The Nature Conservancy 15

Accessing Your Files You may access your files just as you did in the previous section. Accessing Outlook - If you are traveling with your TNC laptop, connect to the local area network, open Outlook and read/send just as you do normally. Other If you usually have your mail forwarded to another account, contact your ISP for information on checking remotely. Most ISPs have a web interface that allows remote checking of . If you do not have your laptop with you and your is not forwarded to another account, use Outlook Web Access to check your , The Nature Conservancy 16

18 Outlook Web Access (OWA) OWA provides access to your Inbox via a Web browser. It is to be used while connected to the Internet. All you need is a PC that is connected to the Internet. 20 Accessing Voic To access your office s voice mail system be sure you have the correct information before you go. Check to see if your office s phone system has a reference card you can use while traveling. International Calling Information The following table provides basic reference information for each country where TNC currently has offices. The International Direct Dialing (IDD prefix) is the international prefix needed to dial a call FROM the country listed TO another country. 25 International Power Chart When traveling internationally, you will need to know the power voltage and frequency of the countries you are visiting. A full description of international voltages and necessary adapter types can be found online at: Make sure you have a plug adapter to deal with the different outlet configurations.
