Includes clinical equipment and materials for use in public school and medical-setting management programs. COURSE CONTENT This undergraduate course will provide comprehensive overview of methods of clinical management. A specified undergraduate sequence of course work is prerequisite. The initial portion of the course will focus upon prevention, assessment, and intervention of communication disorders in order to obtain a framework for acquiring clinical skills. Additionally, the course will focus upon ethical conduct in order to recognize constraints in clinical decision making. The next portion of the course will focus upon contemporary professional issues in order to gain appreciation of basic practices of the field. The final portion of the course will focus upon certification, specialty recognition, licensure, and other relevant professional credentials in order to show documentation of qualifications for the discipline. Learning goals and objectives will be covered and assessed through lecture, presentation, demonstration, reading, homework, discussion, teaming, writing, research, laboratory, tutoring, and testing. 1

(Required) WEB RESOURCES Course Goals and Objectives & Student Learner Outcomes (ASHA, 2014 Standards) IV-D IV-E IV-G IV-H The student will demonstrate current knowledge of the principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with communication and swallowing disorders, including consideration of anatomical/physiological, psychological, developmental, and linguistic and cultural correlates: Summarize philosophy and guidelines for diagnosis and therapy including the process implemented in the training program. Describe relations between appraisal and instructional planning and determining levels of functioning, prognosis for change, goals and objectives, and target behaviors. Develop writing skills in clinical reporting including types of reports generated in different clinical settings. Employ principles of behavior management to write instructional programs. Utilize tools and techniques for implementation in clinical instruction with exposure to commercial and clinical-devised materials. The student will demonstrate knowledge of standards of ethical conduct: Interpret the Code of Ethics as it pertains to professional conduct and apply professional ethics in practical situations and challenging circumstances. Compile strategies for building of leadership skills in the professional setting that facilitate professional behavior. The student will demonstrate knowledge of contemporary professional issues: Explore provision and delivery of clinical services in education focusing upon public policies, settings, administration, models, related disciplines, and reimbursement. Explore provision and delivery of clinical services in medicine focusing upon public policies, settings, administration, models, related disciplines, and reimbursement. The student will demonstrate knowledge about certifications, licensure, and other relevant professional credentials, as well as local, state, and national regulations and policies relevant to professional practice: Identify standards of national and state regulatory agencies. Identify the requirements of certification from undergraduate program through Clinical Fellowship Silver Core Objective (CO14) - SPA 370 satisfies the Silver Core Objective 14 - SPA 370 students will generate a research project based on their semester-long clinical experience. Each student is required to follow a client in the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic on a weekly basis and complete the following activities: a weekly treatment note following the therapy session, participate in the session if invited, take data accurately on behavioral changes observed, and create a client profile as a semester project. The client profile project requires 2

3 each student to report on their client in medical staffing fashion at the end of the semester to their colleagues in SPA 370, analyzing all aspects of the intervention process throughout the course of the treatment period. Each aspect of the project will tie directly to the weekly class content laid out in the syllabus. The projects will be written using appropriate technical jargon from class lectures, further tying knowledge to skill. - Records and registration: There are no official absences from any university class. It is the personal responsibility of the student to consult with the professor regarding absence from class. The University of Nevada, Reno (UNR) deeply values and supports the participation of undergraduate students in university-approved extracurricular activities. It is the policy of the Nevada System of Higher Education (NSHE) to be sensitive to the religious obligations of its students. - Classwork: All work of any kind must be completed and submitted in class or on Web Campus by the scheduled due date regardless of how much it is weighted into the final grade. Grades will be penalized for any work not completed and submitted in class by the scheduled due date. Requests for makeup of work will be considered only in extreme circumstances as determined by the course instructor and only if the student notifies the course instructor in writing prior to the scheduled due date. The student must give written documentation of the excuse to the course instructor. - Grading: A plus-minus system will be used in the allocation of grades. Keep in mind that seeking help outside of class is the sign of a responsible and successful student - Disability Resources: Any student with a disability needing academic adjustments or accommodations is requested to speak with the Disability Resource Center (Thompson Building, Suite 101) as soon as possible to arrange for appropriate accommodations. - Video and Audio Recording of Lectures: Surreptitious or covert videotaping of class or unauthorized audio recording of class is prohibited by law and by Board of Regents policy. This class may be videotaped or audio recorded only with the written permission of the instructor. In order to accommodate students with disabilities, some students may have been given permission to record class lectures and discussions. Class Work IV-D, E, G, H 30% Ongoing You will develop a portfolio that will serve as a reference tool for you in the future as you proceed through your educational and professional career. You will submit the organized portfolio to the instructor at midterm and end of the semester for inspection and grading. Your participation in the class activities will be monitored by the instructor. Participation includes asking relevant questions, participating in discussions, coming to class prepared (reading), and contributing to the dialogue. You will complete minute write-ups on the information presented during the lectures to demonstrate your understanding of the content. These write-ups will be returned to you the following class. Clinical IV-D 20% Ongoing You will choose a client in the UNR Speech and Hearing Clinic to follow/observe on a weekly basis. You will be required to make contact with the graduate clinician (after approval from your instructor), follow the client once weekly, and write weekly SOAP notes about the sessions. (At the discretion of the client/family and clinician, you may be invited to join/participate in the sessions.) You will bring the SOAP notes to class every Tuesday for small-group practice with the Instructor and the TA. Small groups 5

6 will meet during the last 15 minutes of class to discuss the notes from the previous week. **You do not count these hours toward your total for certification.
