2 BCCÊs Sustainable Energy Project Currently, six workstreams to reduce BCCÊs energy consumption by 50% by 2018: 1. Improved Energy Management 2. Energy Efficiency of Corporate Buildings 3. LED Lighting 4. Behavioural Change 5. Highways Lighting 6. Schools (Policy & Programme) 1 Based on 1990 emissions Contribute to the Green CommissionÊs City-Wide target of reducing CO 2 emissions by 60% by

3 Birmingham Sustainable School Programme The Sustainable School Programme takes forward work with BCC and the Carbon Trust since 2010 We delivered series of behaviour change related energy saving workshops to over 300 delegates from Birmingham schools The programme also builds on the good work that has been done for a number of years through Basic 21 This is a certificated programme supported through workshops 25 Schools successfully completed the programme 17 schools are currently near completion this year Topics 1. Energy saving 2. Advanced Energy saving and Water 3. Sustainable Transport, & Road Safety 4. Sustainable Waste & Recycling 5. Biodiversity & Growing Projects

5 Birmingham Sustainable School Programme Programme Successes DEC rating improved from E to C Saved 2,000 on Energy bill Saved 15% on electricity bill We have saved over 10% of our Water bill Saved in one day 6.25 or 1200 per year By monitoring energy consumption we have received a refund of 7K Only 2% use cars to travel to school 70% of pupils either walk, cycle or scoot to school 1,500 saved by reducing the general waste collections Removed all cartridge printers from classrooms and installed a managed print solution saving 1,000 Children have a greater awareness of the need to conserve energy and energy saving opportunities

Global We live in a finite, closed environment - Planet Earth Consumption of raw materials, including fossil fuels, is increasing As fossil fuels are used, they cannot be easily recycled As fossil fuels are depleted, they become more scarce and more costly As fossil fuels are used, they release carbon dioxide (CO2 or carbon ) that all but a few sceptics agree is causing the planet to warm up 2. National 3. Local UK a net importer of gas by 2015 Set against a diminishing ability to produce our own power (electricity) By 2015, the UK will rely on gas for over 60% cent of its electricity generation By 2018, the UK is planning to close a third of its power station capacity By 2020, over 80% of the UKÊs gas supply will be imported By 2020, 20% of all energy from the EU must come from renewable sources As a city, Birmingham spends around 2bn on energy each year BCC spent nearly 31M on energy last financial year BCC needed to buy around 1.5M on Carbon Credits last year BCC used 997,440,948 kilowatt hours of energy last year, enough to power 49,872 homes BCC produced 174,578 tonnes of CO 2 last year

Power Lights left on in unused rooms - even automatic lights in Central Admin Buildings (CABs) can be turned off manually once you leave the room Air conditioning, even in CABs, can be turned off manually REMEMBER THESE POINTS WHEN USING OTHER BUILDINGS FOR MEETINGS or TRAINING

12 Power Electrical (ICT) Devices: Switch Off Identify all IT equipment Is it left on unnecessarily? Assistive Labelling: Traffic Light Coding System Green: anyone can switch off Amber: check with user/owner before switching off Red: donêt touch Communicate this colour coding to the whole building

Utilise BEST and other corporate/directorate communication channels Hold staff briefings Recruit Energy Efficiency Champions Hold specialist briefings for these Champions, Building Managers & Duty Holders Initiate: Energy Audits Detailed reviews of building utility consumption (benchmarking, anomalies, operational management improvements) Plan & Act on that information to gather actionable information
