4 Mission Statement "The ECFMG promotes quality health care for the public by certifying international medical graduates for entry into U.S. graduate medical education, and by participating in the evaluation and certification of other physicians and health care professionals nationally and internationally. In conjunction with its Foundation for Advancement of International Medical Education and Research (FAIMER), and other partners, it actively seeks opportunities to promote medical education through programmatic and research activities."

5 An IMG is any physician who received his/her basic medical degree from a medical school outside of the U.S. and Canada, regardless of citizenship This includes any U.S. citizen who received a medical degree from a school outside of the U.S. and Canada

6 Hospital-based training and education that follows graduation from a medical school Includes residency or fellowship programs involving health care services to patients Prepares physicians for practice in a medical specialty and/or subspecialty

7 27 base specialty residency disciplines (i.e., Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, Family Medicine) Fellowships follow residencies GME programs accredited by Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) Training duration is typically 3 to 7 years Required for medical licensure

10 ECFMG Certification assures residency program directors and the U.S. public that the IMG has met minimum standards of eligibility to enter U.S. residency training. ECFMG Certification is required for: o IMG entry into ACGME-accredited GME o Taking USMLE Step 3 o State licensure o J-1 physician category sponsorship / ECFMG

11 Medical Education Credentials o Completion of a medical school curriculum of at least 4 years o School and graduation year listed in IMED* o Primary-source verification of medical diploma and transcript(s) by ECFMG USMLE Exams o Step 1 Basic Science o Step 2 Clinical Knowledge (CK) o Step 2 Clinical Skills (CS) *The International Medical Education Directory (IMED)

13 Visa Sponsor for all J-1 physicians in clinical training 22CFR 62.27(b) Cooperates with U.S. Department of State (DOS) and U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in tracking J-1 physicians in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) database Collaborates with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), academic medicine, legal community on IMG research/policy issues

19 Purpose To facilitate and promote international exchange opportunities in medical education by connecting medical schools and students throughout the world The GEMx Advisory Committee Comprised of international medical educators and experts on global exchange in medicine Countries: Australia, Chile, India, Ireland, Israel, Mexico, Qatar, United States The Charter Signed by all GEMx partner schools Agree to the goals, aims and values, and responsibilities of GEMx participation Not intended to replace existing partnership agreements The Pilot 15 to 20 medical schools Expected launch: November 2013 Program Evaluation Measure outcomes, student feedback, GEMx performance
