NISA Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Take Off 2014 Förnybara bränslen inom flyget vad är på gång? Göteborg Landvetter Airport 24. jan 2014 / Martin Porsgaard: mpo@cphcleantech.com
2 WHERE ARE WE WITH AVIATION BIOFUELS?
Sustainable alternative fuel SAS goal to blend in so much sustainable biofuel as possible when it s commercial available Dialogue with current and potential suppliers In tenders, - require a percentage of sustainable biofuel Will prioritize suppliers who can deliver the highest amount of sustainable biofuel! SAS and the environment /3
EU FlightPath million tons per year To promote and accelerate the development of advanced biofuels, a European Biofuels Flight Path project launched June developing a variety of aviation biofuels for Europe in the coming years. The Flight Path initiative is part of the implementation of an overall bioenergy programme involving fuel producers, the energy sector, and other actors. Working with industry, the European Commission Directorates- General for Energy and Transport, and Research and Innovation are launching a number of initiatives towards the development and further refinement of this initial road map, Including technological, funding and financing issues. SAS Group and the environment 2008

Sustainability is key (Corporate social responsibility) Not just a word - but a safeguard for a growing future aviation Push for solid sustainability criteria for biomass and processes Total sustainable supply chains Sufficient Life Cycle Analysis Encourage the development and adoption of a global sustainability standard (RSB) SAS and the environment SAFUG Exhibit minimal impact on biodiversity Meet a sustainability standard with respect to land, water, and energy use Do not displace or compete with food crops Provide a positive socioeconomic impact Do not require any special fuel handling equipment, distribution systems, or changes to engine design
Global efforts Global efforts Sustainable Aviation Fuels User Group (SAFUG)
Where are we.. Technology to produce jet fuel is in its infancy and aviation is prepared to use alternative fuels The internationally approved specifications: Products are fully in line with the current jet fuel used today The specifications also ensure that they can be used in existing engines on all jet aircraft and in facilities on ground All players in the aviation sector agree on this development SAS Group and the environment 2008
Biofuel is part of the transition from a fossil to a fossil free world We expect a lot of different bio-refineries in the future dedicated to many different productions. Some with focus on chemicals other with a single streams Economy of scale will be very essential The access to sustainable raw materials biomass is crucial SAS Group and the environment 2008
Pass ways.. 10
Regional Biofuel-consortia established Brazilian Alliance for Aviation Biofuels in (ABRABA) (Brazil) Aviation Initiative for Renewable Energy in (AIREG) (Germany) AlfaBird, Sustainable Way for Alternative Fuels in Aviation and Flight Path 2020 (EU) Initiative for the Production and Consumption of Biojet Fuel for Aviation (Spain) Saltwater Tolerant Biomass As A Source of Aviation Fuel, (Abu Dhabi) Commercial Aviation Alternative Fuels Initiative (CAAFI) (US) Flight Path to Sustainable Aviation Fuels CSIRO (Australia and New Zealand) SAS Group and the environment 2008
NISA - Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation New alternative fuel for aviation is about: Sustainable future for aviation Reduced CO2 and pollution CleanTech solutions Creating jobs Less use of fossil fuel Synergies as a driving force Stakeholder case Coordinate and kick start initiatives across the supply chain.!
NISA - Nordic Initiative for Sustainable Aviation Main purposes: Facilitate, coordinate and push forward the development of sustainable and alternative fuel for the aviation industry, the partners sets Overall objectives are: Helping catalyzing and promoting by no later than 2016 at least 3 pilot projects covering the value chain for sustainable jet fuel Catalyzing the development of a business case by for a project covering a full scale biofuel production for aviation in the Nordic Region Contribute to ensure the Nordic region as a minimum meets its share of the EU Flight Path target of 2 million tons or more of sustainable jet fuel in 2020
SAS Group and the environment 2008
Algea The Algal Biomass Organization: Algae fuel can reach price parity with oil in 2018 if granted production tax credits. In 2013, Exxon Mobil Chairman and CEO Rex Tillerson said that after spending $600 million on development in a joint venture with J. Craig Venter s Synthetic Genomics since 2009, algae fuel is "probably further" than 25 years away from commercial viability. Algenol claims to have already produced 9,000 US gallons per acre (8,400 m 3 /km 2 ) of ethanol and hope to produce commercially in 2014 Scientists Turn Algae Into Crude Oil In Less Than An Hour: Researchers believe they have figured out a way to make a promising biofuel that is cheap enough to compete with gasoline.
