1 UW Colleges Transfer Guide SECONDARY EDUCATION Bachelor of Science in Education (BSE) College of Education & Human Services The following guide is intended to assist you in planning for your eventual transfer to and graduation from UW Oshkosh. This guide includes only the requirements that can be completed at the UW Colleges. It is not a requirement, nor always advisable, to complete all courses listed in this guide prior to transfer. For a full list of requirements refer to the additional resources included below. Note that this guide is an advisory tool only and subject to change. UW OSHKOSH ADMISSION Submit the UW System application, available online at: Send official transcripts from all post-secondary institutions attended. Send official high school transcripts if fewer than 30 transferable college credits have been earned. THE MAJOR A degree in Secondary Education is sought by those wishing to teach English, Math, Natural Science or Social Science to grades 6-12, or Art (BFA), ESL, Foreign Languages, Music (BME) or Physical Education to grades PK-12. Students must complete general education, degree, and major (content area) requirements to complete the degree. Only the general education and degree requirements are addressed in this guide. More information on the requirements for each major can be found in the UW Oshkosh Bulletin (see Additional Information below). To pursue an education major at UW Oshkosh a student must be formally admitted to the Professional Education Program (PEP). Admission to PEP is a multi-phase process, separate from admission to the university. Admission to one does not guarantee admission to the other. This process includes sequential courses, specific deadlines and careful planning. To ensure timely and efficient progress through the professional education program at UWO, the Associate s degree, or a two-year stay at the UW Colleges, is NOT advised. While every student s situation is unique, the majority of students will benefit from transferring in time to complete the first stage of admission (see #1 below). 1. 6 NOTES University Studies Program (USP) The University Studies Program (USP) is the new definition of general education at UW Oshkosh, designed to help students reap the maximum benefits from their college education. Transfer students will participate in USP at varying degrees based upon the number of credits transferred into the university. Other Notes 0-29 Credits You will be responsible for the same requirements as an incoming freshman. Work completed will be evaluated on a course-by-course evaluation and applied to UW Oshkosh requirements Credits You will be partially responsible for the requirements of the USP. A transfer year experience, a short course to orient you to UW Oshkosh, will be required. Work completed will be evaluated on a courseby-course evaluation and applied to UW Oshkosh requirements. 60+ Credits Work completed will be evaluated on a course-by-course evaluation and applied to UW Oshkosh requirements. Any USP requirements not fulfilled by transfer coursework will be addressed at UW Oshkosh. USP will be in effect for all transfer students beginning Fall of In a few instances, courses are designated differently at the UW Colleges than they are at UWO in terms of general education (i.e. HU becomes SS in transfer). In these instances the student can often choose to accept the UWO designation, or have the UWC designation honored. Changes cannot be made until after UWO admission, and it is always best to discuss these changes with an academic advisor first. The official UW Oshkosh GPA will be calculated using only UW Oshkosh credits earned. Credits transferred to UW Oshkosh are recognized, but the grades are not included in the official UW Oshkosh GPA. For various university-level honors designations students will have to earn at least 60 credits at UW Oshkosh and only those Oshkosh grades are considered. The official transcript will display the official UW Oshkosh GPA, UW Oshkosh course work and transfer course grades that will not be included in the official UW Oshkosh GPA. The UW Colleges made changes to several departments, effective January 1, The current departments are listed on this guide with the previous departments and course numbers in ( ).
