How to Pick Best Cell Phone Company in Oakmont A study by Oakmont PC Users Group and Oakmont Technology Forum John Hamilton & George McKinney
A Common Problem In Oakmont! Solutions: informed choice of cell phone company today s focus get a microcell or get a signal booster
Cell Phone Reception depends on a Network of Cell Towers
Reception depends on line-of-sight connection
Mapping Cell Phone Coverage Why? How? Cell phone reception problems are common, especially in mountainous terrain. Reception maps provided by carriers all overestimate the quality of service and do not allow meaningful comparisons between carriers. We are using three approaches for mapping. Android phones can record signal strength while moving around community. The data can be output and mapped. Survey of residents If carrier tower locations are known, a line of sight analysis will show coverage from each tower. Carriers generally do not share this information. Cell Mapper Antenna Search
Signal Mapping and Survey Agree ATT Cellmapper combined with test-drive provides reliable guidance in picking cell phone provider
T-Mobile Claims Very Strong Signal in Oakmont Our Measurement Shows About 50% Have No Service Measurements Allow Quantitative Comparison Between Carriers!
ATT and Verizon have very similar signal strengths ATT Verizon
Line of sight coverage from 80 foot tower on Novavine property (compared to CellMapper)
T-Mobile has very weak signal. Sprint is pretty good. T-Mobile Sprint
Comparing Coverage Claims With Reality Carrier s Coverage Claim Our Measurements T-Mobile Verizon AT&T Sprint Very Strong 4G (all Oakmont) Digital Coverage (3G or 4G, all Oakmont) Digital Coverage (3G or 4G, all Oakmont) Fast 4G LTE (Best Coverage, all Oakmont) 50% have no data and dropped phone calls Residents in far West or far East have no service. Residents in far West or far East have no service Slow data service (2G or 3G) almost all of Oakmont
For Data, Speed is Important 2G, 3G, and 4G Each generation of cell phone has brought more capabilities The second generation (2G 1990+) brought good quality voice (and text) The third generation (3G 2000+) brought reasonable data service as well , internet browsing The fourth generation (4G 2010+) has brought high quality video Cell networks default to the best service they can find (2G, 3G, 4G) You may have a 4G phone, but if the service available is 2G, you get 2G
There are only four cell phone networks in US, Verizon (best coverage and speed for data in Oakmont) AT&T (second best for data in Oakmont) Sprint (data network is nearly obsolete, probably best coverage for voice in Oakmont) T-Mobile (lousy in Oakmont) But they all rent service to mobile virtual network operators (MVNO) Page Plus Cellular Cricket, H2O Wireless Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile, Republic Wireless. Ting, Credo Tracfone, Straight Talk and Net 10 use all four networks. If you buy one off the shelf in Santa Rosa, you will probably get a T-Mobile phone with lousy performance in Oakmont.
To Pick a Cell Phone Company, Start With the Following Questions Do you need phone for international use? If so, you need an Unlocked GSM phone on AT&T network. SIM cards may be purchased for destination. Do you need a smartphone with internet access? If so, you should probably avoid slow Sprint network. Get either Verizon or AT&T network. Is voice service (no internet) adequate for your use? If so you can consider Sprint, Verizon or AT&T network.. Where will you use your phone in Oakmont? Use coverage map to verify good coverage where you need phone. Borrow a phone and test-drive it for a day.
What Have we Learned? Network Maps are not accurate for Oakmont Verizon and AT&T networks work well for the middle of Oakmont West golf course area West of Oakmont Drive up to West Rec Center South of Oakmont Drive up to Pythian (including Starry Knolls) Sprint network seems okay with voice, and slow data The T-Mobile network doesn t seem to work well anywhere The Eastern end of Oakmont and much of the Western end have no reliable cell network There is little correlation with the type of phone
Measurements of Oakmont signal strength were made with four phones (one for each network) and submitted to cellmapper. This is T-Mobile Signal strength from our measurements at cellmapper web site
