5 Course information Advanced Materials MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course provides a fundamental understanding of materials properties, their processing and computer based design procedures which are essential for product commercialisation from the concept phase. It also includes the development of new materials and the improvement and application of current materials in new and novel structures. Aerospace Materials MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course covers the improvement and development of materials for aviation applications. This includes materials for airframe, aero engine and the increased use of smart and functional materials. Applied Nanotechnology MSc, PgDip, PgCert In this course you will investigate the potential of applying nanotechnology through smart and functional materials to transform whole sectors of industry from healthcare to energy. The course covers the technologies to design, realise and analyse micro and nano-scale devices, materials and systems. Manufacturing Technology and Management MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course is designed for graduates that want to study manufacturing, materials and research techniques in order to engage in innovative and new product development. There are a number of optional modules including composites manufacturing for high performance and precision engineering. Ultra Precision Engineering MSc, PgDip, PgCert Ultra precision skills and technologies are required to develop the next generation of products. These products include aerospace, space, energy production, opto-electronics and displays, sensors and advanced medical devices. You will acquire fundamental knowledge of these important technologies, as well as being exposed to state-of-the-art applications. Welding Engineering MSc, PgDip, PgCert This course provides all the practical and theoretical knowledge required to become a welding engineer and a materials and joining specialist. It covers modern welding techniques, automation, metallurgy, materials science, welding processes, design, quality and related equipment.

6 Key facts and statistics Course structure: Key facts: MSc courses comprise of taught modules, a group project and an individual thesis project. FULL TIME 1 year Taught modules 40% You will undertake eight taught modules which run from October to February, giving key information for subsequent project work. FULL TIME Group project 20% Group projects run from February to April and provide teams of students with the opportunity to PART take responsibility for a TIME consultancy type project, usually with an industrial sponsor. (For those doing this course part time studies this is replaced with a Dissertation.) START DATE Individual Project 40% The final individual thesis project takes up the remainder of the course to September. It allows students to demonstrate their ability to think and work in an original way and overcome genuine problems in manufacturing and materials technology, often supported by external organisations. Professor Peter Foote Head of Enhanced Composites and Structures Centre Peter is currently researching methods to validate and verify structural health monitoring technologies for a range of uses including safety critical aerospace and defence applications. Professor Jose Endrino Head of Surface Engineering and Nanotechnology Institute Jose s interests include generating new knowledge in coatings technology and materials science of thin films and surfaces, in collaboration with leading international groups and industry. 8 How to apply Entry requirements: Candidates must possess, or be expected to achieve a first or second class UK Honours degree in a relevant science, engineering or related discipline, or the international equivalent of these UK qualifications. Other relevant qualifications, together with significant experience, may be considered. Where applicable, students must achieve a minimum IELTS score of 6.5.
